Just a PSA with Australia Day/Invasion Day coming up:

Please consider indigenous australia’s history with ‘breed out the black’ policies when talking about cultural backgrounds and things like what 'percentage’ or 'caste’ someone is. 

We understand that words and phrases like 'mixed’ and 'white-passing’ and 'non-black PoC’ are useful in many contexts but they can be extremely upsetting considering our history and how we’ve shaped our identity within its context.

An indigenous person is an indigenous person, whether their hair is dark and wiry or sleek and blonde.

We don’t need anyone telling us that we’re not 'full blacks’ because what they’re really telling us is that the racist policies of australia’s past - which saw our ancestors raped by white men and their babies taken away by white men to be, in turn, raped by more white men - won.

However the Black/White dichotomy actually overlaps the broad grouping of “people of color.” Many people of mixed heritage — Native-American, Middle-Eastern, Caribbean, Asian, African — continue to be functionally encompassed by the Black label, and demonstrate why progress like the Civil Rights movement benefited many more than just African-Americans. The Native American people are real superheroes. They took a stand and fight for their rights on their own land at Standing rock. Indigenous people have been surviving police brutality for months to save clean water and environment. They were under attack and suffered from cold and injuries. They were even forced to eat thanksgiving dinner on top of a sacred burial site.  

This is insane. And Bernie Sanders knows. And he stands there, like one of them, drawing attention of the government and the media.

In 1847 during the Irish potato famine, the Choctaw Nation of Native Americans donated $147 to assist with famine relief. An Irish town built a memorial to thank Native Americans. (source)

According to Wikipedia it was actually $710 and when you adjust for inflation it makes just under $20,000. I’ve heard people making fun of this like it was some crappy amount of money that they donated but it was a pretty big deal.

Look listen did you know we aren’t taught about this in school??? In Northern Ireland where I live?? We’re taught about the famine and how many Irish people died and why and how many went to America etc but we are NOT taught that a) the English REFUSED to give aid and in fact TOOK MORE FOOD and that b) Native Americans sent money AND grain!! To a country they weren’t even close to! That they’d barely even heard of!! Why aren’t we taught this? (I fucking know why)

You tried to invalidate my statement that Black Americans were stolen and sold to America and didn’t come her voluntarily by saying “Africans sold slaves!” As if that’s not already known and it’s not only misleading to say that, it’s reckless. It shows no regard for any deeper knowledge of the situation i.e. The creation of chattel slavery and how that differed from slavery as it was known as by the Africans.

Oh my lord, they WERE stolen and no amount of “but Africans sold them” changes that fact. People whose bodily autonomy was violated and who were stolen from their homes and cultures and sold. If someone walked into your house and took your stuff and sold it to someone else, the stuff is still stolen even if the person looked like you. You’d still say they were stolen.
