grimmvale has always felt a little too small for jane and itβs not because she dreamed of leaving, but because she always felt like everyone seemed so certain of who everyone else wasβlearning very quickly that sheβd rather get lost in an actual story rather than listen to one being passed around through gossip.
when people think of her,Β gentle might be the first word used to describe her and they wouldnβt be wrong.Β sheβs extremely patient, too curious for her own good,Β and has a habit of making people feel like theyβre the only person in the room when talking to her.Β though,Β beneath that softness is someone who is extremely stubborn:Β meaning that what sheβs decided to believe in (or even who) then thereβs very little thatβll change her mind.Β her father being the prime example,Β but weβll get to that a little bit later.
the bookstore has always been a home away from home long before it became her job.Β as a child,Β itβs the one place everyone knew where to find her if she wasnβt at her actual home. Β janeβs always loved recommending books as much as she likes hearing that people though of them because to her,Β stories have never been just an escapeβΒ it fed into the understanding that people could be messy,Β or perceived as bad but it didnβt mean they werenβt deserving of another chapter.Β
so,Β to think of it,Β maybe thatβs why sheβs never been good at seeing the world in black and white.Β jane learned through her father that love and disappointment could exist in the same place.Β that someone like her father could make unforgivable choices and still be capable of loving their daughter with everything they had.Β itβs been two years since her father went to jail (he owns an art gallery but had been caught trafficking stolen art pieces and artifacts) but she doesnβt excuse what he did nor does she expect anyone else to.Β she just refuses to let the worst decision of his life erase every good moment theyβve shared.Β every bedtime story,Β birthday, lesson.Β he was the person who shaped her into the person she is today and thatβs something jane would never forget.
