I do actually think Catherine of Aragon was an abusive mother but its rare to meet someone who considers her one for any reason but vicarious anger caused by being wayyyyyyy too defensive of Anne Boleyn which kinda cools conversation about it
@ice-cold-peaches I think telling her to prepare for martyrdom at the hands of her father instead of doing as he said was a fairly dark continuous choice to make. On top of that the position Catherine (like her own mother) inhabited featured a normalized treatment of children as transactional entities. Among the elite daughters in particular were often used for social currency, and at all levels of society in that time period, it was common for children to be seen as 1. inherently sinful and in need of correction (which many people still believe,) and 2. utterly beholden to the authority of their parents, which surely influenced Catherine’s decision making. Mary obviously cared about her very much, and Catherine as well, given their conduct, but I still believe they were products of their environments and acted accordingly, at times destructively.
