1. Own up to your emotions. If there is one thing I am really really good at it would have to be hiding what I really feel. I can be pissed at someone without them even knowing and maybe, itâs a good thing. A surge of emotion can kill our ability to rationalize things, to think properly, preventing us from seeing things clearly and from coming up with good decisions. But bottling what you really feel can be lethal too. In 2015, I learned that it is okay to feel things and it is okay to let the people involved and the people who are always around you to be aware of what you are feeling, regardless if it is a positive or a negative emotion. I believe that before you are able to heal yourself and move on in life, the first and most essential step is to acknowledge what you really feel.
2. Stop taking things for granted. I know how you guys think this is something that has been said so many times but this is also something we always forget to do maybe because life is doing such a great job in always keeping us busy. I have to admit that I have taken so many things for granted in the past years but in 2015, I started patching things up. I am starting to spend more time with my family and friends and I have never felt so good about my life up until now. Once we realize the importance of spending quality time with the important people in our lives and actually spending quality time with them, we start to actually feel how there are so many things we should be thankful for. Plus, the memories made with these people will forever be priceless.Â
3. Change is not always bad. Change is what you choose it to be. I donât know where does the idea of change being something bad come from. Personally, I had held this idea for so long to the point that I restricted myself from trying and experiencing new things in life. I thought to myself that I am already in a safe and comfortable place in my life, why change that for something unsure? Because of this, I never grew as a person. My life was nothing but merely a meaningless routine. Donât get me wrong, I still love the warmth of assurance and I still value commitment like I always have but change is the only constant thing in Earth. So the next time life throws you a bucket of change, donât run away. Again, it is something what you choose it to be so make it into something that will benefit you, that will help you grow.
4. There is nothing wrong in pampering yourself. 2015 was nothing but a year of self-pampering. The amount of money I have used to shop, to buy myself good food, to purchase tickets for movies, amusement parks and parties  is... Okay, I donât even want to talk about it. But on a serious note, I donât see anything wrong in doing all these because they have been my ways of rewarding myself after a stressful week at school or after getting a good grade. This is my way of loving myself and putting myself first.
5. Read. Read a lot. For the most part of my life, I can say that I love reading but there was a period when I stopped picking up books and would rather check Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, YouTube and sites like Buzzfeed. There is nothing wrong in doing so and I would be a hypocrite if I say that I stopped checking my social medias. I am still addicted to them as much as I was before but now, I make it sure that I seriously read. My course has forced me to read tons and tons every single day with readings that are very hard to digest because of the language used. Firsthand readings of different philosophers made me appreciate books that can be read in a more relaxed way. This is my way of feeding my mind and soul.Â
6. Start doing things you have always wanted to do but never got to. Life is too short to always stop yourself from doing things you have always wanted to do. They do not have to be something huge and revolutionary at first. Start making a list or even just a mental note and make sure that you get them done. Doing so should remind you that if there is a will, there is a way. As for me, I have always wanted to go to an amusement park and ride the craziest ride they have because the last time I went to one was actually nine years ago. Gladly, I can say that I can now check that off of my list.
7. Learn how to be at peace with yourself. I donât know if this is as important for others as much as it is important for me. I am not sure if this is because I am an only child or not. I want to live a life wherein I am comfortable being alone, that being alone does not make me think that it is equated to being lonely. Also, I want to live my life not running away from myself, from who I truly am. Sure, there will always be times when voices will crowd my mind but I want to make sure that I will know how to deal with them, how to keep them from getting under my skin. I canât say that there is one sure way in doing so but maybe knowing that you are doing things for and by yourself can greatly help.
8. Stop comparing yourself to others. I have to admit that this is difficult to do and this is definitely one thing I still have to work at. Most of the time, I still find myself getting jealous of other girls because I donât have the perfect body, hair, skin, etc unlike them. Instead of wasting all of your time and energy being insecure, use those to better yourself. Comparing yourself to others will never get you to contentment even if you have everything someone could ever want.Â
9. Happiness is a choice. And yet another clichĂ© saying but hey, reminding myself got me out of a dark period in my life. I was in a slump for a couple of months, not wanting to do anything besides school work - well, this is only because I donât want to flunk. I was deeply uninspired, unhappy. Then, I realized that happiness is a choice. I can either stay like that forever or I can find good in everything that I am doing and everything that I currently have in my life. Most people would say that âlife does not allow them to be happyâ and I used to think the same but you have the power to choose what you can feel and be so choose to be happy, always.
10. Just enjoy life. Wherever life will take you, just enjoy it. Enjoy the time you spend with your family and friends, enjoy the alone time you give yourself once in a while, enjoy achieving things in life, enjoy music, enjoy food, enjoy your room, your home and even the outside. But also learn how to loosen things up. Do not be too hard on yourself. It is okay to fail every once in a while and learn from your mistakes. Enjoy every bit of life because life is too short to be spent hating on it.
2015 taught me a ton of stuff and I cannot be more excited to see what 2016 brings.Â
