"It is my belief that we all have the need to feel special, and it’s this need that can bring out the best in us yet the worst in us. This need created the velvet rope.”
The Velvet Rope was titled as a metaphor for the emotional barricade preventing others from revealing their innermost thoughts; in comparison to the velvet rope used at film premiers and award shows, prohibiting access from spectators. It also served as a metaphor for the barriers separating different classes of society. It was based on various events throughout her adolescence and early adulthood, resurfacing after attempted escapism. Its composition addressed the “emotional and sexual politics of relationships,” restraints of depression, self-esteem, domestic violence, homosexuality, AIDS, and sadomasochism.
"There’s nothing more depressing than having everything, and still feeling sad. We must learn to water our spiritual garden.”
Happy 17th Birthday, The Velvet Rope!
