âI completely agree, Hye. Rumi and Gabe should get to roleplaying as soon as possible. She can show him the ropes with all her acting experience.â Her eyes twinkled with mischief. Rumi was the most adorable shade of pink and it worked beautifully with her olive tone.
As for Wes, he had his share of supporters. She was largely one of him, but not for his facts. Space just didnât interest her. It had been incredibly boring since freshman year and she would not be looking further into it.
âIâm proud of him for helping you. His advice can sometimes be a bit perplexing in delivery, but he always helps me find clarity.â She leaned forward, âBut I would love to hear more about what youâre passionate about. I donât mean all of your important ideals, we all heard that, but what makes you, personally, feel alive. If you feel like sharing.â
Lou scooted closer to Hye-Jin, recognizing the tone of voice. She gave a small nod of her head and lowered her own voice, âHopefully I have an answer for you.â
@rumibehbahani
Rumiâs hands flew to her mouth. âHye-jin. No. NO.â She was going to melt into the floor. And faint. And then roll around in her own pathetic melt-y mess until she sunk through the world. She moved her warning gaze to Lou. âDonât⊠Donât say that ever again. That is not⊠That is not what acting is for. I wouldnât be able toââ There were too many possibilities, nearly all of them mortifying. Also it was very possible sheâd go into directing mode and that wouldnât go well. âI just couldnât.â
She wasnât exactly surprised at Louâs friendly sum up of Wes, but she couldnât help but feel that some upselling was happening. She didnât know what to make of it. Wes was a bit of a serial dater, but she supposed they already had one Wilder ex-girlfriend in the group, and Hye seemed fine with it. It would be fine. And it might provide some distraction from her own new relationship.
She jumped at the opportunity for a switch of subject. âYes, Fern. What nerdness can we nurture? Thatâs our specialty.â
She almost said a New Romantic specialty, but she didnât want to sound cliquish. Her mother had explained that very gently to her after attending one of her first plays. Something about âshining at the center of a crowd.â

âI feel like I need to save you but I donât know how,â Fern said to Rumi. She wouldnât laugh, even though she did find it amusing. âYou and Gabe?â she asked. âIs there something there?â Fern loved the idea. Gabe was one of the kindest people she knew. And Rumi was wonderful. The whole different religion thing could throw things off for most people but maybe with them it could work.
Fern smiled at Lou, nodding slightly and wishing she could control the heat in her cheeks. She didnât know him as well as the three of them did, but she wanted to. And she could tell he was a good guy. She needed more of that in her life.
âMy nerdness. Well. My bedroom at home was filled with different kinds of house plants. Donât make me garden outdoors though, the skill doesnât translate. I brought my favourites here and propagated some of the bigger ones so I didnât have to give them all up.â Fern reached for the marinara sauce and started spreading it over her base. âI donât have a lot of spare time outside of my school and leadership commitments. But I love to read. Mostly fiction, set in different places in the world. I want to travel more than anything but I canât do that yet, so I go in my mind.â That probably sounded so pathetic, but it was an escape before the escape. âI hope I will get to someday.â
@janghye-jin
Hye-jin often struggled to predict people, but she had known at least a little of the reaction she would be getting from Rumi. She was glad when Lou indulged her. And even gladder that Rumi just seemed to be embarrassed rather than upset. Perhaps she was loosening up a little. She didn't offer Rumi any reassurance that it wouldn't happen again anyway. She was a very poor liar. She just gave herself points for not speaking for Rumi when it came to answering Fern's question about Gabe.
"Oooh I love traveling!" She'd been on some "girl's trips" with her mother, usually before she started her period of being embedded. "I can tell you where to eat in Kabul and Casablanca and Belém. But you should see her plants you guys. Lemurs would be so happy there." It was the highest compliment she could give. "And of course you will." She finished matter-of-factly. Even a fully contained habitat in a zoo had an exit. They just had to find the exit. Which meant finding the snake.
"Just a second." Hye tugged gently at Lou's arm to pull her out of earshot from the other two. She knew Rumi was used to this but she wasn't sure how to explain to Fern what was going on, so she hoped Lou could handle it if need be. Once they had enough space, she looked to Lou. "How encouraging is too encouraging of Wes and Fern? When does it become a hindrance? Or odd. More odd than usual. For me. I mean. Me encouraging."
