This is the first post of a series about the main deities of the Mexica or Aztec people:
Quetzalcoatl is the Lord of Wind, Wisdom and Creation. His name means Plumed Serpent, Precious Serpent, a name which refers to the arrival of the spring and the growth of the crops.
According to the sacred narrative, when the Teteo had tried to create humans and failed, Quetzalcoatl descended to Mictlan, the Underworld, accompanied by His twin brother Xolotl. There He collected the bones of the ancestors, which were ground and mixed with maize and blood of the Teteo to create a masa dough. With it, They gave form to the first humans, and Quetzalcoatl breathed on their mouths to give them life. Ever since, He is venerated as great creator and patron of humankind, model of rulers and renewer of the Earth.
