Can we please talk about the fact that Gale ALWAYS had Katniss’s back?? It’s always one of the biggest reasons why I will always love their relationship . It didn’t matter if they were mad at each other/disagreed, if Katniss needed someone for support/help/advice, etc, he was there for her as soon as he could be. And also, they always listened to each other, they just didn’t always necessarily agree. And that’s actually shows a really strong friendship, as they didn’t just tell the other what they want to hear!

Only in the Hunger Games fandom will someone take a victim of the Capitol — and yes, Gale is a victim — and drag them through the mud, calling him self-serving, selfish, the devil himself AND compare him to Snow, a literal dictator who killed thousands of children…

Hc on Gale’s name? It differs from the others in that it’s not a plant nor Roman influence. Was he born during a storm? His personality? Thoughts?

So, interestingly, there’s a species of plant called Myrica Gale that grows in wetlands, and can be found in North America. Not sure if this is a coincidence or if Suzanne knew this before writing his character, but I found it interesting that the plant thrives despite poor growing conditions of its natural area.

Much like Gale in D12, who was able to survive despite everything he was thrown his way, and all the losses he sustained along the way.

Now, if we say this is a coincidence, my hc is definitely that he was born during a summer storm, the kind that makes your windows rattle with each gust. And maybe Hazelle looked up at her husband after Gale was born and said, “He’s going to be a force to her reckoned with, I know it.”

And maybe her husband said, “Name him Gale.”

Or something like that 🙂

(And I should note that gale force winds are typically not destructive. Take it from someone who’s ridden out a number of hurricanes, with winds much higher than what NOAA classifies as a gale.)

The fact that people see Gale as anything less than a freedom fighter baffles me.

This spoken word poem always reminds me of Gale, especially Gale after the events of Mockingjay — his thoughts on winning the war but losing Katniss (his hope that they’ll find each other in another life, brb crying).

These stanzas in particular KILL me:

“And if I had to confess there stands a greater

Chance that I have all but lost my mind in here

So I suppose it's better off this way

Because I've always believed that the odds of finding what you seek

Tend to favor those who are open to seeking them in the first place

And I for one have never quite understood how

I want to add a comment as someone who was there waiting for Mockingjay to hit shelves for nearly a year. You go through so much thinking and imagining and online discussions with other people's opinions over the course of that year that really every possible scenario goes through your mind because you have nothing else to do but wait and talk about it. And even as someone who loved Everlark down to my soul and bones, I had enough time to wonder what Suzanne was going to do.

There is an attitude now of "it was ALWAYS Peeta" and "Gale had no chance!" But that was not the attitude at the time. At least 1/3 of the fandom were Team Gale (as it was called then with some resentment due to the association with Twilight). And they did not come up with that from nothing. They most relied on the whipping scene and that Gale was Katniss choosing the rebellion and fighting against Snow, so of course she would end up with him as that's what he represented. Others preferred their friendship and thought that the connection they had stretched so far back that they made most sense together (and yes, I debated all of these points but they were stubborn). All we knew about the love triangle was that Katniss and Gale would be together in D13 while Peeta was in the hands of the Capitol and very much in danger.

While I never doubted my own stance as "Team Peeta" I didn't know what the story would unfold and ultimately none of us knew--there were no movie spoilers or going from one book to the next to the next to get the whole picture. None of us knew what Suzanne's ultimate message in the series would be. One of my greatest fears was Peeta dying at the hands of the Capitol, becoming a martyr or a motivation for Katniss's rage to take down the Capitol once and for all. And Gale seemed set up to be like a back-up plan for her if that happened. While in my heart I knew that she loved Peeta and they were superior, I wasn't sure yet how exactly Suzanne was going to break my heart and killing off Peeta seemed like the surest way to tear me apart. And then Gale being a consolation prize to help Katniss heal.

So yeah, that's why I put unsure in this poll. Because I had eleven months to lose my damn mind about it.

I actually had the same thought. Reading the books, you don't really know who will survive at the end so I put "Unsure" as well.

Chiming in here as someone who was “Team Gale” as the books were being released — I also had no idea who she would end up with, and neither did a lot of my friends who were reading the books. I think it’s easy in retrospect to say, “It was always Peeta.” But back then, it really wasn’t obvious. Especially if, like me at 13/14, you weren’t part of an online fandom community. I remember being extremely nervous for Mockingjay because it felt very much like 50/50 for either ship. And turns out for good reason! Because I got my heart very broken lol

Also, I think the movies play a huge role too, and the first Hunger Games movie didn’t come out until two years after the Mockingjay book was released.

I hope that once the TBOSAS movie comes out, Gale slander will fizzle out.

Jokes are all fine and dandy (you do you) — but I genuinely love and find Gale’s character extremely interesting and nuanced, and I constantly feel like I’m being gaslighted by people commenting or blogging things that didn’t happen in the books or are twisted by people who think he’s the devil incarnate lol

I try to stay away from posts that are clearly not for me, but man I feel like I’m triggered every time I open the Gale tag 😭
