No one has time for this junk science bolstering these white standards of beauty, not on Rihanna’s Internet. No, ma’am.

I’m reblogging this post because it exemplifies how twitter has grown into a space in which black pop culture and social activism can spark dialogue and conversation between the black community in a public manner. There aren’t many other platforms in which users can call out someone’s so-called “science” proven beauty standards in order to aid the larger conversation pertaining to the media correlating whiteness to the ideal standards of beauty.

Although the speaker begins by elaborating on how her ability to code-switch saved her from being harassed by police who thought that she was trying to rob her own home, she goes on to explain how her instinctive to code-switching is indicative of a reality which threatens diversity. The speaker touches on having to learn how to align herself to be culturally compatible as a young black girl attending a school for gifted (often white) students. I chose to reblog this artifact because it emphasizes an important aspect of code-switching that most people tend to overlook. When someone decides to code-switch, they are subconsciously accepting the mainstream standard that their instinctual manner of speaking is less-than or not fit for every situation that they enter into. Often times, standard-English is often times associated with “white” English, which relates back to the idea that whiteness is the prime standard for those living in our society.

Despite intensely negative experiences, I graduated from school still believing that education was enabling, that it enhanced our capacity to be free. When I began undergraduate work at Stanford University, I was enthralled with the process of becoming an insurgent black intellectual. It surprised and shocked me to sit in classes where professors were not excited about teaching, where they did not seem to have a clue that education was about the practice of freedom. During college, the primary lesson was reinforced: we were to learn obedience to authority.

Almost all our teachers at Booker T. Washington were black women. They were committed to nurturing intellect so that we could become scholars, thinkers, and cultural workers-black folks who used our "minds." We learned early that our devotion to learning, to a life of the mind, was a counter-hegemonic act, a fundamental way to resist every strategy of white racist colonization. Though they did not define or articulate these practices in theoretical terms, my teachers were enacting a revolutionary pedagogy of resistance that was profoundly anticolonial. Within these segregated schools, black children who were deemed exceptional, gifted, were given special care. Teachers worked with and for us to ensure that we would fulfill our intellectual destiny and by so doing uplift the race. My teachers were on a mission.
