Hey Everyone... I'm moving my blog!
Hey yall. So I've decided to move my China adventures blog to my main blog called, "thatguywiththeblog." I want to use it more, but find little reason to outside my China posts, and since I won't be using this blog after China... I figure, why not move it!

Photos like this were a gift... There were a few hundred in these gardens at any given time, so being able to take this type of photo was very pleasing. Most of the tourists stick with their tour guide and listen to the rich history... Well I can't understand my tour guide, so I would wander off to the places that the groups haven't reached yet, and the serenity was indescribable.

This is probably one of my favorite photos that I took. There's so much life in this photo for me. From the dirty glass windows, to the potted plants, it tells me that to some people the canal is still a place of beauty to appreciate. The fact that somebody puts out plants for the boats the pass by spoke to me. Idk, is that cheesy? Well whatever! It's China! And I'm here for a year. I'm allowed some cheese!
Again, I just really love that Old World feel that this picture gave to me.
The Lion's Grove Garden was the first part of the trip... and we actually didn't plan on going on a boat ride... but we were con'd into buying a Suzhou tourist day trip that did get us a discounted price at the Lion's Garden, but the rest of the day's destinations were pretty crappy or rundown, and we didn't hit any of the other major Suzhou destinations. Nonetheless, the canal ride was still pretty nice. I picked the wrong side of the boat to sit on unfortunately, and the woman in front of practically had her arm and camera out the window the entire time, so I didn't get too many pictures, but I hope you enjoy these nonetheless.
If you look at the top picture, you can see that there's a door leading to nothing and some worn stone stairs. Using the canals for washing clothes and bathing was a very common thing, but obviously now it's not used for that. I saw a lot of doorways like this, and some that were even still intact, with a boat at the bottom!
Suzhou Museum... I've spared you guys the pictures of the museum... I also didn't take many. You know the deal: pots, pans, ancient chinese writing, and some paintings of a mountain... you'd be better off googling it than looking at a grainy no flash photo of it.
But as per the last photo... the gentleman in the photo is Johnny, my friend that came with me to Suzhou.
One of the things I love about the city is the high overhanging trees, that make me feel as if I'm in a forest. I love how the branches block the sun... there's some mystical about it.
Taking a picture of the white people... because they're rare and fascinating! But can we talk about this guy's socks/sandals combo. I'm jealous.
So far in China, I've seen five white people, one black person, and several Arab men that were a part of a tourist group.
In New York we have cheap street cartoonists... in Suzhou... bad ass clay sculptors.
Apparently this guy is very famous though, and one of a kind. I almost wish I had done it! Maybe next time...

Nonetheless here are some more photos of the Lion Grove Garden... If you look on the third picture, on the right side, you can see the rock formation part of the garden. It's much bigger than that and goes back further, but that's a glimpse in case you were wondering.
Again, as you can see it was super super packed... and difficult to get wide shots without it looking like this.
Suzhou's Lion Grove Garden...
The Lion Grove Garden was probably my favorite part of Suzhou. Unfortunately, my pictures of it really don't do it any justice, but I will soon be uploading a video of different things that will include this garden so please stay tuned for that.
The entire garden is like a labyrinth of beautiful rock formations. Some of the rocks were sculpted to look like lions, hence the name.
Picture 1: This is probably one of the most popular attractions of Suzhou and as such, it was difficult to get pictures of just the garden, but I was glad to get this photo of a pathway leading to another part of the garden. I imagine an old emperor walking down here once upon a time, as the garden did once belong to one such a person.
Picture 2: Another lucky moment where I was able to snag a photo without people. Chinese people love to pose with everything. Haha... So many of my photos ended up being with someone else in it. haha. But besides that as you can see, the landscaping that went into this garden was absolutely ingenious. The detail on how they want the water to fall is taken into account and ahhhh I just love it. :D
One of my favorite things about China is the alleyways... I think I've always been fascinated by alleyways in general. Whereas in America people are usually afraid to walk down them because of the fear of being mugged or something... in China alleyways are commonly used and generally safe. I think the alleyways give off some incredible personality and say a lot about the city... I also love that in China, you can get lost in alleyways and then find yourself in a back street that actually has tons of restaurants and stores for you to explore.
They couldn't keep us apart forever.
Part 1 of my Suzhou Album!
Picture 1: This was the view from the hotel that I stayed at. It was right in the heart of the shopping section, and really great walking distance for everything. The beds were the most uncomfortable thing I've ever slept on, but it was the first night since arriving in China that I got to take a nice shower. The one in my apartment is only a little more than a trickle... and it's a hose that you have to hold. Even though the beds aren't great, I'd probably stay there again... it was a great price too. As you can see from looking out the window, there was a really fantastic view, and definitely made me feel as if I was in China... and hey... I was! I am! :D
Picture 2: Just a pic of some of the shops around the corner from the hotel. In bigger cities like Suzhou, and especially this shopping district there were American stores like H&M, and Gap... I also notice a lot of stores that had names like "John Smith," or something really gritty and American and when we'd go inside the clothes were nice, but the material wasn't as rich. They were actually just Chinese companies, but wanted to look "American" or "British." lmao. I guess they were trying to attract tourists, and it worked, but at the end of the day, they didn't have the shoes in my size that I wanted! :(
Picture 3: Suzhou is considered the Venice of China... as you can tell form this canal. From my understanding, very few people use the canals as a mode of transportation, but I have some great photos of the canal coming up where you can see how people in Ancient times used to use the canals much more for different reasons.
Picture 4: Just another picture of the canal and stores on the other side. What I loved about the central part of Suzhou, which is where these pictures are, is that in order to maintain a unique quality about it, the government forbids buildings from going over a certain height... I think it's 3 stories or something... But it's done so that Suzhou can keep that classical appeal and look to it. And it works because I think it's what makes Suzhou so beautiful! Most restaurants in Suzhou had English translations.
Picture 5: That's a bus stop across the street. Much fancier than the ones at home... haha
Adventures in China: My Chinese co-workers tried to poison me.
A couple of days ago, it was somebody's birthday at school, and so she wanted to buy bubble tea for everyone... I was unsure of what to get so I told her to get me whatever was her favorite.
There's a drink waiting for me after I get out of class.
"What is it?" I excitedly jab the fat straw into the plastic top.
"It's milk!"
I slowly start to sip it.
"Just milk?"
"And.... uh...."
I start to taste something different.
"Mashed potatoes...?"
*SPITS OUT DRINK*
