jas: thank you for being there for me lately
jas: i appreciate it more than you know
“Meh, it doesn’t end for another three more hours. I’ll be fine Jasper, I’m used to these long shifts, they just get to me ever once in awhile.”
“Thanks though man, I appreciate it.”
“Well, text me if you need a friend. And thanks for the pie.”
“Jas Addams, do you take me for a fool? You think I would follow a stranger to his locker to discover his long kept family secret without having a backup plan if I can’t keep my big mouth shut?
“Well, aren’t you sneaky. You know, people like you are the reason people get trust issues. Going around telling the family secrets and all. Wait - are you a spy, sent to seduce me and learn the ancient secret? Because if you are, that’s really fucking cool.”
Brianna raised an eyebrow in confusion before shrugging it off. “Thanks Jas,” she said, grabbing her car keys.
Jasper checked around to make sure no one was paying them any attention. “So, about yesterday. Do you think anyone heard me? I’m worried that people will know what I did. Again.”
“Around 5 months or more? I just wanted a new change of hair color.”
“That’s insane, man, there must be like.. at least one bottle of bleach on that. Probably even more.” Jasper noticed the brown paper bag containing a bottle sticking out of Nate’s bag. “Woah, man, looks like someone will be having a good time tonight.”

“Thank you, I’m sure it will do just that.” She smiled and a soft laugh escaped her lips. “It’s Bast. Bast Hartley. I think you should tell me your name too, so if the day comes when I do spill the secret I can have someone to blame for telling me the secret in the first place.”
“Jas Addams. So if the ship goes down, I’m coming with you, is that right? That’s very cunning of you. I wouldn’t have expected it. Have you been playing me this whole time, just to get your hands on the secret?”
“We’re gonna have to find a drug that makes you less chatty.”
“Aw man nah, I’m already buzzed, I can’t be on anything else. This is the way it’s gotta be. Feel free to use whatever you want, though. Maybe you’ll enjoy my chats more.”
“And what if it isn’t?”
“Aw, no worries, man, I don’t judge. It’s just really impressive, I couldn’t care less if it were natural or not. How long do you spend on that shit?”
“Hmm, alright. I’ll go get those seven apple pies for you - by the way, they just came out of the oven so you’ll be in seventh heaven.” She let out a giggle as she began to package up the pies for the boy.
“My family and I actually try to give as much food away to homeless shelters as we can, but we do have to throw away some food, which blows.”
“Aw man, that sucks. Well you have my word that these will definitely not go to waste. When does your shift end? Maybe you could help me. You know, if you wanted to, no pressure. You just seem like a really cool chick, that’s all.”
Brianna walked down the steps and stopped at her locker, grabbing her car keys and looking in the mirror. She took a small glance at the person next to her before fixing her hair. “Did you need something or are you going to stand there like an idiot?” she asked in a frustrated tone.
“I just really like your earrings. They’re sparkling and catching the light so beautifully.”
“Can i help you with something? I mean you surely seemed to be staring at me quite a lot.”
“Man, I was just wondering - is that hair colour natural, or what? It’s been tripping me out for the last half hour.”
she smirks, “that’s for you to figure out.”
“If my entire schooling was based on me ‘figuring it out’ for myself, then I guarantee I would not have made it this far. I don’t know what you want me to do, but you have to tell me.”
“Of course, us Mcdougall’s relish in the fact that we are gifted at crafting amazing desserts.”
“Wait, are you being fucking serious? You want seven apple pies for yourself?”
“Yeah... so what? I have a fond appreciation of delicious delicacies, And seeing as barely anyone seems to like apple pie these days, I’d be saving them from waste. The thought of them going in the trash is gut-wrenching. Don’t you think?” Jas cocked an eyebrow in anticipation of her answer. There was something about Stacey that he found to be instantly comfortable.
“Of course we have nice, hot apple pies here! We’re the best damn bakery in town, what do you expect from all other other bakeries? They just don’t compare to my family’s business.” She replied with a laugh.
“How many would you like, babe?”
Jasper’s face lit up with a childish grin. “Bless you, and your whole family. It’s good to know that there are still decent people in the world. You know, I knew there was something special about this place. I’ll take seven.”
“I am ready to taste this locker coffee, I’m bouncing with excitement,” Bast grinned and held out her hands to take the bottle of iced coffee. After she had a drink, her hand moved to her heart. “I understand the meaning of life. This locker coffee has shone a new light over my life. Truly amazing, I understand why it must be so sacred and I will take this secret to my grave.”
“Keep it, it’s yours. I hope it lets you get through the day.” He smiled. “You know, though, I just can’t go around giving out the family secrets to just anyone. You should probably tell me your name, so I can hold you accountable if the secret gets out.”
“Hello! My name is Stacey and welcome to Sweet Escapes, what would you like today…?” The girl faked a smile as she silently groaned to herself, watching the customer walk into her family’s bakery. She was in the middle of a very long shift, and had yet to take any of her breaks of the day.
“Hey, man. Can I get a nice, hot apple pie? Is that something you guys have? I’ve just been to three other bakeries and they just looked at me like I was an alien or something. Am I just living in the past, where apple pies were a thing?” Jas smiled at the girl. It was a charming smile, and showed he didn’t have a care in the world. Well, except for apple pies. He really cared about those.
