“Jeez, Jas, that’s… so sweet and disturbing… kind of. And it also means that I’m totally coming with you.” Of course Riley was going to flush everything down the toilet… okay, except for some weed. “You’re so lucky that you have the most decent best friend who has the manners to call before visiting.” He said, giving him a playful nudge on the shoulder. It wouldn’t be a lie to say Riley wasn’t moved by what Jasper said about not upsetting him; and also kinda surprised how considerate he could be even when he was high as fuck.

“Hey,” he smiled sheepishly as they made their way up the steps of his apartment building. “It’s ‘cause I care, y’know?” Even though it sounded like he was joking, in his own weird way, Jasper was being completely earnest with his friend. “Let’s get this over with, yeah?” He took a deep breath before unlocking the door to his apartment, wincing slightly as his usual mess of papers came into view, along with, thank god, nothing other than a couple baggies of weed.

“Let’s just get her.” Riley said quickly, trying to pull a smile that he hoped that would look genuine. He really didn’t want Jasper to go back to his place for a while. Even if he had to monitor everything Jasper’d do – no matter how creepy it sounded – he was gonna make sure that Jasper was clean. Riley wrapped his arm around Jasper’s shoulder as he usually did and gave him a reassuring squeeze as they walked. “Are you sure? Do you… not want me to come?” Riley asked. Jasper was just gonna get his cat so it’d make sense that Riley’d wait, but he was gonna check every inch of his clothes when he got back down.

“No! No, it’s not that I don’t... I mean, I just don’t know... You know?” He shook his head. “That doesn’t make any sense. What I mean is... It’s just that, like... Every time you’ve been at my place, it’s all looked fine, but that’s only because I’ve cleaned up and put everything away and made sure there wasn’t any shit lying around, because I didn’t want to upset you. But I don’t remember what my place looks like right now, so—” He shrugged, then grimaced. “That’s all.”

Lucia’s eyebrows rose up, the smirk on her face spreading into a full blow smile at his reaction. What can she say? She thrives on conflict. “I was sitting here minding my own business until you barged in next to me. Excuse me for trying to make conversation. Seems going with my first instinct and brushing you off was….right. As always”

“I was literally just trying to order a drink. You’re the one who started talking to me.” As he turned to walk away, his annoyance finally starting to quell, but instead of apathy it was replaced with a hint of guild. Not much, but enough that he turned back around. “I’m sorry. I’m in a bad mood, and I don’t like it when people try to get me to talk about myself.”

“Believe it or not, I’ve been drinking a lot, too,” she slurred in a soft murmur, quietly laughing to herself at the obvious statement. Val probably reeked of tequila and bad mistakes, but she still wrapped herself into the blanket he provided her, letting her scents mingle with his notes of marijuana and amber. Though she would’ve rather drunkenly stumbled into Elena’s apartment (or better yet, her own), a little part of her held onto the hope that Jasper wouldn’t ask her why she was poisoning her body. After all, that’s how whatever between them worked — neither of them pried into the other’s matters when they clearly didn’t want to talk about it. Hopefully a silent agreement would be made as she accepted the grilled cheese from him, digging in almost immediately. “I’ve always had the worst drunchies. Can you believe I never drank in high school? I never drank in high school,” she muffled with a bite of food in her mouth before swallowing. “Holy shit, I thought you’d be more like a Kraft Singles guy?”

“For some reason that doesn’t surprise me,” Jasper mumbled, taking a seat in an armchair adjacent to the couch, Ruth promptly hopping onto his lap. “I think I can get a pretty good picture of what you were like in high school.” If one thing was certain, it’s that Valeria would’ve hated Jasper, perhaps even more than she did now. He was a stereotypical burnout who somehow managed to get good grades despite emitting an aura of not giving a shit -- the antithesis of Val. “Also, fuck you, I’m not white. Why would I eat Kraft Singles?” He shook his head now, trying to look annoyed but ultimately conceding to the small smile that was trying to make its way onto his face. “Why’d you let yourself get so drunk anyway? I thought you liked to be in control, mojigata.”

He could’ve left her on the floor of his entryway and it probably wouldn’t have made a difference with how drunk she was. Her giggles only increased in volume when he threw her over his shoulder; God only knows what would’ve happened if he had tried to pull that stunt when she was any less drunk than she was in that moment. But instead of going kicking and screaming, Val sunk into his plush couch, immediately smelling the weed wafting from the fabric that had surely absorbed much of the scent over the years. “I’m fine, it’s fine,” she murmured, waving his concerns away as her eyes followed his every action. She couldn’t help but think about the last time when she had simply left him to his cocaine deprived self. Now that they had swapped roles and her intoxication couldn’t make out her own apartment, he actually took care of her. Pulling her top off to replace it with his oversized one, she then folded her legs under her as she ignored his question and asked her own, “Did you do coke again?”

He’d disappeared into the kitchen by the time she asked him about doing drugs, and for the first few moments afterwards, he considered the possibility of pretending he hadn’t heard her. She was drunk, anyway; there was a slim chance she’d remember every part of their conversation come tomorrow morning. But at the same time, he had nothing to hide. In fact, he only had reason to be proud of himself. “Appreciate the concern,” he finally decided to call out dryly, mindlessly gathering the ingredients to make grilled cheeses. “No. I haven’t. I’ve been drinking too much and smoking too many cigarettes, but I guess it’s all about baby steps or some bullshit.” After a stretch of silence, interrupted by the soft rattling of pans in the kitchen, Jasper reemerged with two grilled cheeses wrapped in paper towels. “Eat,” he mumbled, tossing the tiny parcel towards his bleary neighbor. “The grease will help with... everything.”

“Oh, don’t worry. I’ll be as vague as a… as a… I don’t know. I wanted to, you know, say something smart but I couldn’t come up with anything.” Riley chuckled. “And, jeez, Jas. Of course she’ll have no idea who I’m talking about.“ He said, shaking his head. Riley smiled sheepishly when Jasper handed him the phone; he opened the back cover and removed the SIM. “In my defense… Snake used to be my favorite game, alright?” He laughed and handed Jasper the card. “Let’s go get your cat… unless you wanna spend more time here?”

Jasper sighed, shaking away his paranoia as forcefully as he could. “Sorry. Yeah. Of course. Why would she have any – Right.” He began to follow Riley out of the store, relieved to escape into the fresh – albeit frigid – air. “You know, I can probably just let him stay at my house. I’ll go back and forth between yours and mind, it’ll be fine. Everything will be fine. Yeah.” By the time they reached his apartment to get some clothes and a toothbrush, however, Jasper’s anxiety had started to rise once more. He began to pore over all the possible remnants of drugs that might be lying around his place, about any temptations he might have to face in front of Riley. “You can stay down here. I’ll just run upstairs... Be right back, okay?”

Lucia lifted up her drink, taking a long sip of it and leaning back as she watched male take his own shit, her eyebrow raising. “What’s got you in a mood today?” she asked, everything about his demeanor seeming pissed off.

“Why don’t you fuck off?” Jasper snapped, immediately regretting his words – not that he was one to admit he made a mistake, let alone apologize for it. “You got nothing better to do with your night?”

Well come in anyway, we are not gonna talk here.” The brunette insisted, shrugging her shoulders. “What are you mumbling about?” She narrowed her eyes, crossing her arms over her chest. Maya couldn’t help but scoff. “Why not?” She questioned. “What the fuck are you gonna do now? Are you gonna find a boring, minimum wage job and bore to the death?” She shrugged. “I feel like there’s a behind this and I wanna hear. Let’s go to the living room.” The brunette made her way to the room and took a seat on her couch. The room was a mess, there were still few lines of coke on her coffee table. “I hope this doesn’t bother you.”

The second he saw the lines of coke, Jasper fell silent. His first instinct was to step towards it, then to run away from it, but instead he remained frozen. “Dude...” he finally muttered, failing to pull his eyes away from the coffee table. “I can’t– I...” He wanted to tell her that he was supposed to be reaching the end of his withdrawals, that he was actually doing well – especially with the help of Riley. That he already had a job, that everything was lined up for him to get his shit together. But he couldn’t bring himself to tell Maya any of that. Instead, he found himself biting his bottom lip, clenching his fist, taking a step towards the table, his palms sweaty -- and his willpower began to crumble, bit by bit.
