you know what’s even better than a guilty pleasure?
a smug indulgence. tell yourself, “i’m gonna do this thing because i like it, and there’s nothing you can do to make me feel bad about it!” eat that cake! read that romance novel! be free!!!

i still love things the way i did when i was seven years old - possessively, obsessively, all-encompassing until there is nothing left to love and i am so so very sick of it that i cannot love it any longer. i devour the excitement of wanting, of having something new, and i wrap myself around it until it has seeped into my skin. it is mine, it is mine, it is all mine. it has me buzzing about and singing its praises for days and days and days and day. but you are not a thing, i cannot love you like this. i am not used to this. i am loving you slowly, sweetly, savoring the fall and lingering in all of the brand-newness of my heart. there is so much to you, so much to learn, so much to know. and i want to know it all, but not at once. you are years and years and years of thoughts which cannot be contained and stories and histories and laughter like falling trees and you have favorite things like i have favorite things. you are not mine, i am not yours. we belong to ourselves and we are showing each other pieces of what we are made of. and i am getting used to this. i am learning to love this. this us and this you and this me.

Sometimes the drinking won’t drown out the voices Sometimes it makes it louder So loud it actual spills out of your mouth
You were different, you made me feel Secure It’s easy to feel safe and secure by yourself, But to get that security while being around someone else is Something new
I never got jealous, maybe because we already had a purely platonic precedent I remember how you’d regale me with your stories of conquests So it makes the whole dynamic different
I’m different
That and, there’s a feeling of superiority that I get when I think about our connection Somehow I know I know You’ll never connect with anyone on the same level That may be Ego talking, but that doesn’t change that the thought is still my own I feel confident that, even if we don’t end up where I want to end up, you’ll marinate on this
You already are

it’s actually crazy how true this is for me right now.
