Letting folks here know I'm gonna purge any and all pressure content I've posted to the best of my ability, I won't be touching that game anymore
☁️ Every other day I'm wondering...
has anyone done this yet 😭😭😭
OFFICIALLY PENNILESS
Last week I had a bigoted asshole be absolutely racist and vile in my dms and since then I've been terrified of losing my 12+ yo blog, here is a link to my archive in case you all need proof I've been here for more than a decade.
Our last post so you can back track and learn more about our situation.
I can't avoid asking for help anymore, if it were just me I would just let myself due but our kids, my partner, our cats and my in-laws do not deserve to go hungry.
We have kids and elderly, we have 4 diabetics at home, the insulin went bad after a blackout and the replacement we got is not enough.
We need help affording groceries, bills and my meds.
Our eldest son is still suicidal with dysphoria and we missed his second appointment at the trans clinic due to lack of money. We want to get back on track.
My healthcare renewal is this january 20th or I will lose it and I can't lose it.
$750/$950
Paypal Kofi
It totally slipped my mind to update the amount on the main post, I have no excuses.
All this has been put forward to get medication, laundromat, groceries, diapers/pads/hygiene products, cat food, cat litter, transportation to doctor appointments/lab tests, etc.
We are on our last $100 we intend to use to cover bills/rent.
Our bills total amount is $276 so we're still short.
$100/$276
I still have to meet our landlord to negotiate the rent but considering he wants us to cover both Jan/Feb it is going to be impossible for us to cover without help.
I will try to keep you all posted on Calli's health progress and our overall situation.
Thank you for your time and tolerating us in your dashboards 🙇🏽♂️

Genya Shinazugawa: A Fish In a Birdcage
It's my favorite boy's birthday and today I want to celebrate why he's possibly one of the most talented characters in the show while still being considered one of the "weakest."
In case it wasn't immediately obvious, Genya is my favorite little guy from Demon Slayer. Everything from his design to his abilities to his personality and story just speak to me.
For this analysis I wanna focus on a little bit of everything, starting with his design.
So from the get-go, the first things you notice about the boy are the huge ass scar on his face and his scrunkly little mohawk. The scar immediately tells you that he has a history. It's an unspoken message of survival and overcoming suffering.
As for the mohawk, well you have to look a little deeper into how Japanese media portrays hair. For early media, it's a sign of refinement and status. To the point that one of the many hallmarks of evil in Japanese folklore is unkempt hair. For the mohawk specifically, it's a symbol of rebellion and a strong, edgy personality.
His clothing is purple and black. Interestingly, purple was, for a long time, banned by commoners to wear as it was exceedingly hard and expensive to get ahold of. By late Edo and early Meiji the tides changed to where it became quite fashionable among common folk to wear purple to the point it got the nickname "old purple" or kodai murasaki. (you can read about it here) But purple can also represent strength.
His sharp eyes, small irises, and furrowed brow all point to a very aggressive design. And! I'd like to note that he's using a katana here, which I'll get back to later in another post!
So! Now, we see Genya's traded out his katana for his iconic gun along with a wakizashi (a shortsword used by samurai primarily for finishing blows, fitting as that's exactly how Genya uses it in canon).
There's a modern misconception that samurai were wholly against the use of firearms during their active periods, but history and art show quite the opposite (here). And seeing as Demon Slayer takes place during the Taisho era, when Japan was seeing a lot of "modernization" and were specifically adopting a lot of Western values, it makes sense to implement a character using a more modern and Western weapon (even his outfit is more of a western style with his pants being a straight cut instead of the traditional samurai hakama that the others wear!).
His hair is grown out and more tamed though still in a mohawk style showing that while he's softened, he still has a strong personality and rebellious edge. Another thing I find cool is that the author gave an in canon reason for Genya's hair length in the Kimetsu Gakuen extra; he uses it to gauge the strength and direction of the wind to redirect his shots.
We also see that he's shot up in height and filled out in physique, a very nice nod to how his demon eating abilities affected his body in the long term.
Overall, Genya's design is efficient without giving everything away. It leaves out the subtle details like his hidden gentle nature and his sharp mind and good heart; which I'll elaborate on now.
One misconception I see floating around a lot is that Genya is below average intelligence. This is probably for three reasons: the extra in the Kimetsu Gakuen universe where Sanemi tells Genya to "get better at his math" and the part in the data book where it says Genya is "never calculating." The third reason is that there's a bit of a stereotype that thug/punk=stupid.
But in Kimetsu Gakuen proper we see that Genya is actually making really good grades.
But test grades aren't everything! Even in canon we find out that Genya is incredibly observant. During the Hashira training arc, Genya says this: "Well, not that Himejima-san is exactly good at teaching it. You need to watch and learn and swipe it for yourself, all right?"
This implies that Genya taught himself the Repetitive Motion technique by just watching Himejima do it. He is a master marksman and described as the ace of his high school shooting club able to make real time adjustments to his aim based on how the wind blows his hair.
Not calculating just means he's not one for scheming, not that he's incapable of critical thought. And Sanemi getting onto him for his math scores is him being a hardass as Genya is within the top 15 in his grade.
He is still a child at heart, something he desperately tries to hide and that is readily apparent in the Japanese version. Specifically in the way he oscillates between using "Nii-chan" (the childish way you'd refer to your older brother, as expected in especially young children or women) and "Aniki" (the rougher way of saying it, translates more as "big bro").
As for his gentle nature, I already made a whole post on how I believe Genya stepped in as the homemaker of the Shinazugawa family. (Which you can read here) He's also described in the data book as regaining his "gentle nature," telling the audience that he was a soft hearted boy growing up.
Look at his soft smile here when he sees that Nezuko is okay! He genuinely cares about their well-being despite Tanjirou having what Genya desperately wants but can't have: family, strength, the ability to use breathing.
He apologizes to Kanata and steps in to help the caterpillar girls in one winged butterfly. He may have a brash exterior, but he's got a heart of gold.
However, out of anyone, no one hates Genya more than Genya hates himself.
Which brings me to my next and main topic: Genya's abilities and how it makes him a fish in a birdcage.
From the very first introduction of Genya's ability, the very narrative sets Genya up as "talentless." "He doesn't have the physical talent to use breathing techniques." As a result, his nichirin blade never changes color. He makes up for this by using his gun, but when he's put into a tight situation, that's when his more unique ability comes into play.
Before we get into that, I want to delve into what the breathing techniques are and what they're supposed to do. For that we go all the way back to the beginning where we meet Makomo who says this: "Total Concentration Breathing accelerates your blood circulation and your heart rate. That causes your body temperature to spike, making you as strong as a demon while being human." So we can conclude that the goal of TCB is to achieve demonic strength.
Which brings me to Genya's most unique and prominent ability; Genya can eat demons to temporarily gain the powers of a demon without fully becoming one. So, if Genya can't use breathing but can gain the strength of a demon anyway, then there should be no problem, right?
Well, it seems that the demon slayer corps is built upon a rather strict honor code and places a heavy emphasis on tradition. Genya not being able to use breathing and having to rely on tainted, evil power, to have to stoop down to a demon's level and consume flesh, in the corps' eyes it makes him lesser. And Genya seems overly aware of this.
He says that Shinobu makes a disgusted face when she sees him and he likely relates it back to him being breathless and eating demons. In one winged butterfly, after he's unable to find the words to reassure another demon slayer he thinks this: "He really was broken. He couldn't do a single thing properly. This was probably why his brother wouldn't look at him."
Hell, even Inosuke throws in his two cents, calling Genya a "wimp" for being unable to use breathing techniques (of which Genya gets really defensive about and starts a fight). He thinks of himself as weak in the infinity castle and unable to really do anything until he remembers Tanjirou's encouragement.
It's safe to say that Genya's self esteem is in the toilet.
He, arguably, has access to a technique that's far more potent than TCB in that it not only gives him the strength of a demon but also gives him the healing and abilities of a demon without the downside of actually being a demon. But because it isn't TCB, he's constantly put down and belittled.
He's meant to fly to the top of the cliff when his real strength lies in swimming up the waterfall. He can still get to the same places but he's looked down upon for his methods.
But there's a legend about a carp that swam upstream against all odds, that leapt up the falls of the Yellow River at Dragon Gate and became a Dragon. It's a story of perseverance and transformation and it's one Genya achieves in his last moments.
Genya achieves his ultimate power; unlocking a blood demon art of his own while still retaining his humanity (and yes, he is still human at this point, Kokushibou confirms as much). It's the ultimate demon hunting technique, parasitic roots that paralyze the target and suck the blood, preventing the target from unleashing their own BDA.
His only thoughts in that moment being that he won't let any of them die. Genya sacrificed everything for his brother, ultimately achieving the goal he had when he was just a child: to protect his Nii-chan. And his brother finally lets his guard down to, switching to the more babyish language (he refers to himself as Nii-chan, saying "Nii-chan will fix this") and it's only then that Genya lets his guard down too. In his last moments, Genya got to be his true self.
A kind, fiercely protective, and loving boy with strength that went beyond what was ever expected of him. He is, possibly one of the strongest characters in theory with so much unexplored potential. His design is solid, telling viewers a lot without giving everything away, his story is compelling (especially to people who are gifted in the "wrong ways") and his personality is complex.
There's a reason I can make so many posts about this character alone and why I have more planned for the bestest boy. But for now! Happy birthday Genya!
Hi!! I want to say I really love your analysis, and I was curious about your interpretation of one: it’s very obvious that Tanjirou affected Genya’s character deeply, but I’ve never seen someone go into how deeply he affected his character, from breaking Genya’s arm to being one of Genya’s closest friend. So on an analytical level, how do you Tanjirou played his role in Genya’s life? And do you think Tanjirou and Genya are supposed to mirror Masachika and Sanemi?
You're so so kind! Thank you so much! I do these analyses for fun so it's always so inspiring to see that people like them! And I suppose this is the part where I admit I am a bit biased here: Genya and Tanjirou's dynamic is one of my favorites in the show!
So, to start, let's go back to the very first meeting.
Tanjirou's very first impression of Genya, even before he punches Kanata, is that he is one of five (four that he can see) survivors out of potentially dozens who went in. He is dirty, demanding, and angry and willing to hit a child to get what he wants.
Tanjirou does what he thinks is best at the moment to intervene; he grabs Genya's arm and warns him in very plain words that if he does not let go he will break Genya's arm. Genya does not take his threat at face value and challenges him to do it, leading to, surprise! A broken arm.
What's interesting is, though clearly pissed, Genya does back down. Tanjirou's violence achieves its short-term goal. As for the effect it has on Genya. Well, the next time he sees Genya is at the end of the season.
My boy is feeling petty, going out of his way to bump Tanjirou in the hallway. This scene is mostly a nice bit of setting up the foreshadowing for Genya's ability with his new build and scent. Though I would like to pay special attention to Tanjirou noticing Genya's scent as I do have a theory there.
Now we get a better look into how Genya feels about Tanjirou in SSV proper, starting with the bath scene.
I'd just like to say, I don't blame Genya one bit for dunking Tanjirou in the bath. First, this boy breaks your arm and then he comes acting all buddy-buddy, yelling your personal business, and stripping naked in front of you? Calling you by your first name like your friends? Genya already wants nothing to do with Tanjirou and he definitely doesn't want to answer any of his questions, much less have him naked and in his personal space.
Genya is actually fairly tolerant of Tanjirou all things considered. It's implied Tanjirou broke into his room with a bowl of rice crackers, sat there, and told him the entire Kotetsu story from start to finish before Genya yelled at him to go away. At which point Genya points out that they can't be friends because Tanjirou broke his arm, showing Genya has no desire to interact with someone he views as just a source of pain.
When Tanjirou tells Genya it was his own fault, he, interestingly, doesn't deny it, implying that Genya does agree that he deserved it. So, Genya knows he brought that upon himself but he still doesn't want to be around Tanjirou, likely because he has a history with people that react with violence.
Instead of denying that he deserved it, he protests Tanjirou using his first name. Tanjirou tries once again to entice Genya into being his friend with rice crackers at which point Genya has had enough and tells him to get lost. This is when Tanjirou notices his teeth and the conversation shifts.
I do find Genya's avoidance here to be fascinating because, in my opinion, it's more evidence that he's ashamed of his ability. He tries to tell Tanjirou he's imagining things, but of course, Tanjirou being the little weirdo he is, has the tooth. He hits Genya's threshold of tolerance and gets kicked out.
The very next scene we have Tanjirou saying this: "You like him, too, Nezuko? ... I'd like to get closer to Genya."
Which brings me to my question. Why does Tanjirou like Genya?
He says it himself when he asks "I wonder why Genya's so mad all the time?" Genya is very angry, especially around Tanjirou and their first impression wasn't exactly a good one.
This brings me back to that theory I mentioned with Genya's scent. Now, this is pure speculation and headcanon, but, we know that kindness and gentleness can be heard and smelled in the demon slayer universe.
What if, the reason Tanjirou gets attached to Genya so quickly is because he can smell his underlying gentle nature?
At the end of the day, this is just a theory I had, it's never explicitly stated why Tanjirou takes such a deep interest in Genya.
We see Genya next in the heat of battle when he saves Tanjirou from being electrocuted and shoots the heads off of Sekido and Karaku. We have Genya having his moment with Aizetsu and then the next time we see him...
Tanjirou notes that he does look like a demon but never once does he outright call Genya a demon, even feeling secure enough to turn his back on him to go help Nezuko. This is most likely due to his scent once again. Genya probably doesn't smell exactly like a demon so Tanjirou can at least tell he's still human even if he looks "like that."
We have the infamous choking scene that shows the first shift in how Genya views Tanjirou. When Tanjirou supports Genya's goal of becoming a Hashira unconditionally. Genya thinks it's a ruse at first, but can't resist the genuine innocence in Tanjirou's eyes.
And then he follows through. Genya points out he has to be the one to behead the upper rank to get the Hashira position, so despite it being much easier for Tanjirou to just find the demon directly, he decides to give Genya the chance to do it instead and relays where to find the demon. He redirects everyone to help to support Genya in cutting off the fifth demon's head.
He saves Genya again the moment before his head is about to be caved in, telling him not to give in and promising that he'll protect him. When Genya sees Aizetsu coming for Tanjirou, it's in that moment where he accepts his role in the fight.
He's the one that's better suited to doing the protecting while Tanjirou goes on the offensive. This is the moment when Genya really accepts that Tanjirou wants only the best and that it's up to him to put his feelings aside for the greater good as well. From that point on, Genya becomes a much more cooperative player on the battlefield, actively warning and protecting Tanjirou whenever he gets the chance.
From helping save Mitsuri to directly prying the demon's arms off of Tanjirou's head. He actively looks to Tanjirou for direction. He tries to get down the cliff and help Nezuko during the sun-conquering scene.
And then of course, we have this moment of acceptance, where, despite Tanjirou having everything Genya could ever want, (family, power, etc) he's still happy for him.
And then we have another pivotal moment for Genya; the confrontation with Sanemi. By this point, Tanjirou is fully rooting for Genya, even putting aside his dislike of Sanemi in wanting to see the brothers reconcile. When things get violent, Tanjirou dives between them, saving Genya.
He not only asserts that Sanemi has no right to interfere in Genya's life if he won't even claim him as his brother but has this to say about Genya: "Without Genya, we couldn't have defeated that upper rank!"
It's then that Genya's eyes widen with a realization: That to Tanjirou, he's worth something. Not just inherently as a person, but as a comrade.
The next time we see Genya is at the stone estate when Tanjirou is trying to push the boulder. Right away, you can tell this interaction is almost a 180 from the interactions Genya had with Tanjirou during the beginning of SSV.
Right away we hear that Tanjirou has been trying to get in contact with Genya after the incident (possibly adding Genya to his long list of pen pals?) and Genya explains he's been on lockdown (it's called being grounded, baby).
One of the first things Genya does is apologize and thank Tanjirou (which Tanjirou bashfully brushes off. He really doesn't get thanked for his actions enough). From there they have... a normal conversation. Genya lightly teases Himejima by making fun of him saying "namu namu" and his teaching being bad, he offers to lend Tanjirou one of his mirrors and teaches Tanjirou how to use repetitive motion. It goes from sunset to twilight, implying they sat there and talked for at least an hour.
For their goodbyes, Genya warns Tanjirou not to overdo it and then says that Tanjirou isn't the kind of guy to listen anyway, meaning he's already sussed Tanjirou out. I find his concern here to be sweet, as it shows that he really does regard Tanjirou as his friend at this point.
Genya even offers to help Tanjirou cook! While they're cooking, Genya asks what gets Tanjirou worked up and his almost immediate concern when Tanjirou looks even a little sad is so sweet to see. After which he expresses that if anyone can do it, he thinks Tanjirou can, showing he has an honest belief in his abilities.
After Tanjirou moves his boulder, he shares another meal with Genya (and Inosuke) where Tanjirou reassures Genya that Shinobu is likely concerned about his health, Tanjirou also takes his side in the little scuffle between Genya and Inosuke. This scene is important because it's where in canon he reveals that Sanemi had never hated Genya.
In the light novels we see that helping the brothers reconcile has fully become one of Tanjirou's main goals by this line: "Now Tanjirou was further away than ever from mediating a reconciliation between Genya and his brother."
Finally, we reach the Infinity Castle arc. Where Genya takes direct inspiration from Tanjirou to keep on fighting.
He thinks of Tanjirou, and looks to him for inspiration when he can't force himself to move, and it is in that moment, when he remembers how Tanjirou considered him a genuinely valuable ally, that he finds it.
When the crow delivers the news of Muichirou and Genya's deaths, Tanjirou weeps. He is one of the people seen pushing Tanjirou up when he becomes a demon and is one of the people he sees going to the afterlife.
Tanjirou played an incredibly crucial part to Genya's character arc, but Genya was also important to Tanjirou as well.
Tanjirou is Genya's first genuine friend and the first person to believe in Genya's capabilities as an equal. He humanizes Genya and helps bring back his gentle nature.
As for whether Genya and Tanjirou are meant to be a parallel to Sanemi and Masachika, in many ways, yes.
Masachika also served as Sanemi's first friend and was the one to humanize him. He saw Sanemi as a valuable ally back when he was just "some stupid kid" hunting demons without a Nichirin sword.
All in all, I absolutely adore the dynamic between Genya and Tanjirou, to the point where I will admit I do ship the two to an extent. However, I value their platonic bond just as much<3
Thank you so much for the ask again!
🌲🌲 Demon Slayer and Trees 🌲🌲
FULL disclaimer, it was a friend of mine who talked about this a while ago, I am merely stealing from him because I think it deserves more attention
Demon Slayer loves describing people as trees explicitly or implicitly. Tanjurou, for instance, was like a tree, because he was gentle and sturdy.
For Akaza, the Selfless-State Tanjirou was like a tree.
The state of anatta or anatma, where there is no "self", a Buddhist principle. That's the state Tanjirou attained and the state Tanjurou was always in (would I be wrong in saying Tanjurou was perhaps a reincarnation of Yoriichi?? Topic for another day).
Here's where it gets interesting.
Genya using Kokushibou's BDA which results in him rooting Kokushibou to the ground.
Despite being firmly held and rooted, Kokushibou describes it as "crumbling". I think trees in KNY symbolize more than just gentle and sturdy, but rather the fact that trees have roots and brances.
A past, and a future. A source of your humanity, and giving birth to new buds.
You know who else was like a tree?
Yoriichi, not even in death, could be "crumbled". That's what Kokushibou is reminded of. He stayed upright, unlike Koku who started crumbling merely by being held down. Kokushibou has no roots, no family, no humanity. He gave all that up in pursuit of longevity.
However, that meant he'd not just be alone, but also never have any legacy like KNY so emphasizes. A legacy like Yoriichi who could create the Sun Breathing and its branches.
Unlike Yoriichi, Koku never even believed others would surpass him. He thought the Sengoku era would forever be the greatest.
Yoriichi however, did. He WANTED people to surpass him. While no singular person did manage to surpass him, it was the collectivism of all the humans, slayers, hashiras, who could take muzan down.
All his branches of breathing styles and people he saved including Tamayo and Sumiyoshi's family and the new buds that grew through that, was what led to Muzan's end. Yoriichi was therefore the tree that was sturdy and never fell even after death.
It seems fitting that Koku was taken down because of Genya's tree holding him down.
After all, Koku's sword does resemble the Hinokami dance sword. A sword with branches like a tree.
It also seems fitting that Tanjirou's Sun Breathing was so effective against Muzan. The Kamados are charcoal burners, so they're especially close to trees. Of course Tanjirou's the only Sun breather and Nezuko's the only demon that can withstand the sun.
I'm not sure if I've missed anything, so please so let me know if I have!!
