JAVISTA: Our Birthday - again! We're two whole years old.

Older: yes. Wiser: hopefully. ; ] Happy & grateful: for sure. So, all day this Friday, from 7:00a to 8:00p, we'll be offering $1 drinks (some few restrictions apply, like fancy-dancy drink additions, or extra-special concoctions). Last year's birthday was a fun pandemonium-party, with special visitors, Javista receiving a commendation from the City of L.A. for a new successful biz, and of course: balloons. Do come. Party down. Get caffeinated & non-caffeinated *deals*. Some new Javista features include: cold brew coffee - brewed in a Hario Mizudashi cold brew pot, featuring organic single origin Guatemalan Huehuetenango microlot beans. Cold brew delivers a lower acid brew, yet is still rich & full-bodied - smooth and sweet with notes of nuts and chocolate and an overall fruity flavor.

Rooibos Latté: made from the African red tea leaves - earthy, creamy, rich, and naturally caffeine-free. You can have it hot or iced, or enjoy it as our invention, the Rooibos Gibraltar - a shorter version of the latté with half the milk for a more intense tea flavor.

Finally, we are now offering Javista gift cards, starting with the holiday season. Buy a few and load 'em up for friends & family: stocking-stuffers extraordinaire. (If you buy $25 worth of gift card[s], you can get any free drink *right* on the spot.

Oooh, and an update on our Mugshot wall: customers have been bringing in favorite mugs & having their pictures taken & displayed with their mugs - they join our exhibition, and they get a chance at a $100 Javista gift card prize.

Coffee Makers and Mugs

What's on our walls these days, you ask? Or maybe you didn't, but we'll tell you anyway: there are mugshots and mugs and grinders and percolators and posters and things, and you can also win a Prize.

Our walls have magically sprouted a small "coffee makers" exhibition, including some percolators and grinders and things from the Javista Permanent Collection...

… including a French Peugeot Frères coffee grinder from the 1920s.

And we've also adorned the wall above the coffee makers with four framed patent posters:

...showing drawings of great moments in coffee patenting, including one of the French Press Coffee Maker, patented in the U.S. by Charles Kasher in 1967.

Our other wall has photos & the mugs of some of Javista's favorite coffee *drinkers* - friends of Javista that let us take their pictures with one of their favorite mugs, and lent us that mug for display with their photo on our walls.

You, too, can bring in a mug, have your photo taken with it, and have both photo - your "mug", as it were - and your coffee mug become part of our exhibition. At the end of the exhibition, we'll select one name from these prize mugs, and give them a $100 Javista gift card. (We'll also return your mug to you.)

Space is limited, so if you're interested, come in with your mug and do it now - when the shelves fill up, we'll stop taking submissions.

Last chance to see artist Reza Kassai at JAVISTA

Reza Kassai. Javista has had this *lovely* & talented man's *lovely* and unique artwork on our walls since July, but they are leaving in ONE WEEK. That's right, they are coming down the night of October 28th, and returning to their owner (minus the *five* - count 'em - five [5] that've been sold while on our walls. In fact, several were purchased a while ago, and Reza replaced them with new ones. Because he absolutely rocks). One wall has the utterly HUGE Wall O' Natural Love Chemicals - so popular that they are often posted on customers' instagrams during a visit. We wish they could live here with us forever.

The other wall has the smaller pieces; some of which have come and already gone to their happy new owners. There are replacements (not pictured here). We bought one ourselves.

Here's a close-up of the painting we bought - it spoke to us - and you can *still* see it for just ONE MORE WEEK. (Sorry for shouting. We get so excited.) Then it comes to our house *forever*.

Nothing Up The Sleeve: Siegfried Tieber at Javista

Much illusion! So magic-y!

Starting tomorrow night June 12th, and as part of the Hollywood Fringe Festival, Javista presents the incomparable & astonishingly-laid-back magician Siegfried Tieber.

Running for nine nights during three weeks at 8:45p shows (June 12th - June 14th, 19th - 21st, 26th - 28th) Siegfried will perform his skillful acts of legerdemain and illusion at Javista, which you can enjoy while sipping our fresh-brewed, Urth-roasted coffee, teas, and other beverages, and while enjoying our fresh-baked signature pastries.

Siegfried began his prestidigitatorial career in Ecuador, and has performed to acclaim here in Los Angeles at the well-known Magic Castle.

Tickets are $10, and can be purchased at the Hollywood Fringe website, or for advance sales & at showtime in person at Javista.

You'll want to check out his timeless & sleeveless trickery.

State of the Café: Green

Yes, it sure has been forever since we last blogged.

A few things have popped up recently, and they've made us happy. The first & major one is:

We became part of the Los Angeles Green Business Program and got our certification as a Green Business - we're committed to recycling, water & resource conservation and maintaining a nox-toxic environment at Javista. 

(Photo credit to follow) We were presented with our certificate along with other green business participants at the end of April at City Hall by Mayor Garcetti & his green team - from the City & LACC, who administers the program.

Mayor Garcetti gave an impassioned speech about running clean businesses - he really is quite the speaker.

Other delicious info: we've been mixing up some popular specialty holiday drinks - for Easter 4/20, and just recently for Cinco de Mayo.

Trippy & very olé. ; ] And last but never least, finally: we've become a part of the Hollywood Fringe Festival - we'll be a presenting venue for accomplished magician Siegfried Tieber in his show "Nothing Up the Sleeve: A Close-up Magic Show".

What's the what up? Balloons, always balloons with Javista: The state of the café in 2014 We've been open for over a year, and we can't believe it - also, it's been so frikkety long since we last blogged (although we have been talking on our twitter, Facebook and Instagram accounts), and we can't believe that, either. Happy New Year (already over halfway into the first month...) So, we had our first year birthday (in early December) since we last talked, and that's about the age we act. ; ]

In honor of our birthday, we added some things, and expanded some others. Our closing hour is now 8:00p (except Sundays, which remains 7:00p) and we've expanded our lunchtime hours for sandwich-making to 11:00a - 6:00p. We added a fresh Vegan Delight Sandwich, filled to bursting with avocado, heirloom tomatoes, baby greens and bruschetta. We've also added herbalicious matcha (a powdered green tea), which you can order in three versions: ceremonial, latté, or Gibraltar. (Try it on ice, too - uplifting.)

Some fun stuff happened during our birthday celebrations: we started out by offering free coffee drinks for $1 all day, and we saw our lines going out the door and down the block.

Then we received this very shiny certificate from the City of L.A., thanking us for our contributions to the neighborhood, and for operating with "fair-trade and sustainable business practices". (We love its Battlestar Galactican corners...) This really *made* our day.

Towards the end of the day, Javista owners and workers (minus one):

... released our balloons into the air, with a certificate promising free Javista treats to anyone who found them and brought them to us. (No takers so far...) And then we captured a bright shot of the reason that Sunset Blvd. is called Sunset.

; ] We hope this year will be as coffee-filled and delicious as 2013 was.

Heya, friends and caffeinated followers! As promised, we're announcing our next Javista gallery opening, and *you* are invited - and when we say "gallery", we mean "the two lovely Javista brick walls on which we can hang art". #Swanky

On Friday evening, September 27th at 8:00pm, we'll be hosting a wine & cheese art opening, showing some of the photographs of one of our favorite L.A. photographers: "CONTRAST: The Music Photography of Greg Allen".

Graphic designer and photographer Greg Allen has spent his professional career immersed in images of musicians making music. He has designed records, CDs, books, and posters for major record and film companies, as well as capturing, through photography, music at its inception in the studio and in concert. His photographs at Javista will be a glimpse through the multifaceted lens of Allen's career.

Record Store Day! Spaced Out Album Covers! Awning! Caramels! The Game of Coffee.

Once again, it's been Forever since last we blogged, and stuff has happened, is happening, and will be happening. To begin with, tomorrow, April 20th is Record Store Day - which has celebrated independent record stores since 2007.

Javista, in collaboration with Omnivore Recordings and Amoeba Music, has created a celebratory cross-promotion which gives you a free drink - espresso-based, coffee, tea, cocoa: whatever! - for shopping at Amoeba Records, and brings you into our café to see the beyond-cool "Spaced Out!" exhibit of rare, space-themed album covers. (The free drink is offered with your purchase of premium pastry or sandwich.) Omnivore Recordings producer Cheryl Pawelski has collected these gorgeous and occasionally-hilarious record covers for years, and generously shared part of her much larger exhibit with us at Javista - thirteen of our favorites are on our cafe walls for the next month for our first art show using our NEW museum-quality hanging system.

What else? Well, we've added some delicious new handmade treats to our pastry shelves, including tender salted caramels (below), and the deeply-rich espresso fudge and flourless pecan cookies.

Our protective awning, up for a few months, has finally been labeled, and now both protects our customers from the sun, and identifies us for passing pedestrians and cars as they whiz by on Sunset Blvd.

Our favorable Yelp reviews have gone off the charts - we're so grateful to our customers who've taken the time to write about their favorite Javista offerings, and their happiest impressions of our place. These reviews have been more than we ever could've hoped for, and they've helped us so much. The joint is jumpin'.

Finally: It is known - when you play the Game of Coffee, you either win, or you are insufficiently caffeinated.
