John, writing a letter to Mary: I wish I had never met you. I don’t know what my life would be like right now but no matter the consequences, I would gladly go back in time and undo our meeting. I can’t change the past, but I know I can control at least a part of my present and future, and I’m determined that it will have as little to do with you as possible. Goodbye. John, writing a letter to Sherlock: I wish I had never left you. I was so angry that for a long time I thought of it as you leaving me, you betraying me, you lying to me. But hindsight and all that, and I know now that I’m the one who broke faith. I am so sorry. I love you. I am in love with you. Give me some sign that I’m forgiven. That “we” still exist. John, a Blurry-Eyed Emotional Wreck: *puts Mary’s letter in an envelope and writes “Sherlock” on it, then puts Sherlock’s letter in an envelope and writes “Mary” on it* John, as God facepalms above: *puts Sherlock’s letter on Mary’s grave, and gives Mary’s letter to Molly to pass on to Sherlock* John, gazing out a misty window: When will my unrequited love come back from the war…
