The criticism of AOS Nyota is very blatantly people being upset that she “got in the way” of an m/m ship.

Which in any fandom is often the worst thing a female character can do lol. People have said really disgusting things about aos Nyota like it was genuinely ridiculous. It’s always been clear what the character bashing was really about.

In reality AOS added to the character in a way that has been needed since the 60s. It emphasized her competency, and efficiency.

It also added the linguist aspect which was a perfect fit for the character.

It made up for that scene in the undiscovered country that Nichelle thought was silly where they couldn’t speak Klingon and it did that directly with Nyota speaking Klingon to the Klingons in Star Trek into darkness. It began the process of developing her character which was historically overlooked because of the times.

The AOS writing also set up the SNW writing which is prime universe/timeline canon. Solidifying Nyota as a linguist. The character was respected and updated for a slightly more accepting time and it’s wonderful that Nichelle got to see it.

Actually, no, I don't think that friendships dropping like flies in your late 20s and early 30s because no one has time for that between overwork and family obligations and marriage and kids and partners and the ritual of the time slayer is normal and ok. No I don't think deep conversations and spontaneous adventures being replaced with a tired coffee every six months is a normal part of growing up. I don't think that emotional intimacy and soul bonds disintegrating in the face of practical inconvenience is a fact of life. I think that means something is deeply deeply wrong with our society and I will never forgive it for the friends I've lost

I just watched a video about students getting their papers falsely flagged for using AI, even when they didn’t, and the advice was things like, “Leave in incorrect grammar,” “If you’re quoting something, don’t copy and paste it, type it out manually because it leaves a metadata trail that you used the copy/paste function and that's a flag,” “Write in the cloud so there’s a version history,” and the one that really got me, “if you find you write in a manner that can sounds too robotic or professional and it gets flagged, go to the writing center so a writing tutor can help you sound more humanly flawed,” and like what the actual fuck.

Like I get that is practical advice, but people should not have to fucking do that. They should not have to train themselves around not sounding like AI, when AI only sounds like that BECAUSE it was trained on them.

I spent so much of my life learning how to write, I shouldn't have to unlearn that because some computer algorithm learned from me.

And now she's literally on Instagram picking fights with a Palestinian content creator with cerebral palsy. Basically, this is a disabled Palestinian creator who was interviewed and she said that the future of Palestine is disabled (which is correct and I think Jasbir Puar talks about this in her book, The Right to Maim). And Lorenz went into that interview's comment section, accusing the Palestinian lady of not actually caring about disabled Palestinians in Gaza and whitesplaining to her Palestinian genocide... becos the Palestinian woman wasn't wearing a mask in the interview 🤡

Allies of the Free Palestine movement need to be more and stop putting non-Palestinian allies on a pedestal, and to look out for white saviors in the movement.

So, this is related to a headcanon I have. There's a kind of ritual sale of childhood goods as part of the Ferengi coming-of-age, which was featured in an episode of DS9. The ostensible purpose is to raise capital for the young Ferengi male. But, like, if the Ferengi were approaching this in their usual capitalistic mindset, you wouldn't really get much from what's basically a glorified garage sale

My headcanon is that it is the accepted practice to buy those goods at much higher prices than you would normally pay, serving as a culturally acceptable way of effectively giving financial support

Oh I love these, especially because of the spoken and unspoken meta-traditions around the tradition! Maybe they work similarly to the “speak now or forever hold your peace” thing in human marriage ceremonies. Everyone at a human wedding understands you’re not actually supposed to say anything at that point, it’s just a formality—but you see characters do it all the time in literature and entertainment, because it makes for such a juicy plot twist.

I bet “newborn gets purchased by evil jealous ex-business partner” is a classic plot hook in Ferengi soap operas. It’s their version of getting sold to One Direction.
