If Ratatouille mechanics were real, there would be a whole market of businesses offering the services of operating rats to people who want them, and it'd be like how bees produce honey. People in the rat business would be so exhausted of having to explain over and over again that no, the rats aren't being exploited. you know that Grimm fairy tale "Snow White and Rose Red"? Not the one with the queen and the magic mirror, the one with the bear and the wicked dwarf. "Schneeweisschen und Rosenrot". That one.

Well, the Grimm brothers gathered from various different sources for their tales, and the one that they got this tale from was Karoline Stahl’s "Fabeln, Märchen und Erzählungen für Kinder" (fables, fairy tales and stories for children, from 1818). You can find the 1821 edition here on Zeno.org. This anthology was intended as reading material for children, since she herself worked as a teacher, so the texts vary from stories to poems, and all have a very educational mark. Thus, though she sometimes used folk tales as an inspiration (like with "der Däumling", a Tom Thumb tale, or "Das Haus aus Zuckerwerk", a Hänsel and Gretel type of tale), she invented a few of them, or even adapted some from other authors. Such is the case of "das Stäbchen", the little wand, which adapts mademoiselle l'Heritier's "Ricdin Ricdon", a Rumpelstiltsken story. She also adapted some tales of Madame d'Aulnoy, like "die Prinzessin Graziose", from "Gracieuse et Percinet", or "der Pomeranzenbaum und die Biene", from "l'orangier et l'abeille".

What I find interesting about her retellings is that she cut all the romance plotlines from these stories. Rosanie Röschen doesn't fall in love with the prince who discovered the magic dwarf's name, and she ends up returning home to her mother, finding working for the queen way to demanding. Graziose still has a knight fighting in her beauty's name, but we never get his name, and all of Percinet's help is instead ascribed to the princess's godmother, the fairy Amaranthe. And the prince and princess who escape from the ogres giants by transforming into an orange tree and a bee are siblings.

With all this being said, I can't help but wonder what mrs. Stahl would have thought about the Grimm brothers adding an animal bridegroom plotline to her now most famous tale...
