One solid-colored and the other half-toned to give a range of how much light goes in the room. The art department speed is pretty fast — these need to be designed and then made in just a few hours. Unlike most agency work, the design process including the research stage is shortened. It’s a challenge but a great practice on not over-thinking your designs and just go at it. Here’s the mural artwork I did for the set of “Red Band Society”. One made it through and got printed (the one with the building), initially there was going to be more on set, so there were 3 illustrations created but I like them all so I’ll show you the whole set. This isn’t usually my style of work and was struggling to get the right look, but in the right situations, inspiration will just literally be in front of your face. In this case, my coworker’s daughter at that time came into work and started doodling on the whiteboard. The essence of what I was looking for was right there in her drawings. My advice is to keep your eyes open, all the answers are usually right in front of you. A few years ago I worked on my first television show called “Red Band Society”. Among the different projects I had was designing this look book. It was initially for the director to present to the executive producer (one of the 🐐’s...Stephen Spielberg) the look & feel for the show before going into production. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to meet him, although he did like the cover I designed 👍🏾. Post-meeting it became a guide for pre-production. I did a lot of research for the look of the show including mood boards and set design, a good amount of it made it to the book. This was a fun project as I got to set the initial tone of the graphics before things got kicked off for production. Here’s a few frames of some of the texture and color explorations I did for The Town That Dreaded Sundown titles. Lots of clear acetate paper, ink, and blow-drying time to see what works and what doesn’t. This was done before the Phantom typeface was designed. More in-depth of how I got to the style and look of the “Phantom” typeface for the typography heads. we wanted a “dreaded” look and feel, so I went practical in making the effect. None of the digital effects weren’t working for me, so I played around a bit. In the end, it was printing on acetate paper and adding that grunge look by blow-drying it and using x-acto knife for some detail work. The process took quite a bit of time, especially the drying ink part, but I was happy with the look at the end. It was unique and had a more natural feel to it.
