Resurrecting soon! wonder if anyone still reads this =)
amazing voice.
Books, books, books...
Still slowly reading 'The Book Thief'. Not that it isn't a good book but more because i'm often not in the right mindset to read it.
Lol, got this whole stack of books next to my bed i want to get through when I still have the time, do I have the time? =0
Just read 'The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian'. One of my sister's year 11 english texts which she begged me to read for days. I must say, quite an interesting read for a young-adult book.
What a useless post. In dire need of some inspiration =[
Watching 'Big Think' videos on YouTube...
Online resurrection!
more posts coming soon! Been busy getting my life back in order after a chaotic year...
Danny Archer: Sometimes I wonder... will God ever forgive us for what we've done to each other? Then I look around and I realize... God left this place a long time ago...
After 7 years of development by unpaid folks, the redesigned source based version of the original classic Valve game- Half Life has finally be completed.
Half Life 2 was revolutionary and one of my favourite games so I'm looking forward to playing this after ILP/Portfolio =D
2013- Note to self, learn a self-defense martial art.
Seriously thought about continuing to learn martial art after experience in karate and boxing. Mostly as a way of self discovery and improvement, to maintain physical wellbeing, expand and test my limits as a person, to try something new!, to teach myself discipline and determination as well as to maintain an interesting hobby into the more demanding years of my life. Not to mention handy when in self defense despite avoiding physical conflict being the most sensible choice. Because there will always be situations you can't get out of, when personal values and beliefs are assaulted and cannot be forgiven, when you need to protect people you care about or to stop potential or evolving conflict. Skills I may potentially need as a doctor but hopefully will never require.
So...Krav Maga, Sambo, Keysi or Jeet Kune Do?
Have a feeling readers will not know any of these.
So a bit of background for those interested and also for me to consolidate my thoughts on which one I should learn. I narrowed my choices down to these four due to the well roundedness of their philosophies as compared to the rigid concepts of the more staple and well known disciplines of boxing, taekwondo or karate.
I've previously learn't karate to the level of purple belt and found it stiflingly rigid, often slow and overly 'demonstrative' rather than realistically effective. However the non-aggressive defensive counterattack philosophy is admirable.
Krav Maga
Krav Maga was developed by the Israeli military as a form of hand to hand combat in a real world military situation involving guns and knives. It focuses on efficiency, lethal and incapitating blows, weapon disabling using your environment and instinctive responses. Not really a martial 'art' as much as it is a guide to , nor is it able to be employed to full effect in competition (unless groin kicks, eye gouges are legal and both parties have weapons).
Ironically one of the weakest competitive combat disciplines but rated as most effective in real self defense situations. Many women learn this martial art as a form of self defense not as much reliant on strength as much as it is on using your wits.
Sambo
A Russian martial art combining concepts from judo, wrestling, kickboxing, you name it. Why is it good? 1. It's Russian 2. It was developed once again for the military during Soviet Russia and for Spetsnaz troops and focuses on real life military situations.
You could say it combines the best of many martial art disciplines.
One of the greatest mixed martial arts fighters Fedor Emelianenko is a master of Sambo.
Keysi
The League of Shadows taught it and Batman uses it! Need I say more?
No really, it is a real martial art focused on real life crowd control. It is designed to fight multiple opponents at one time and teaches 360 degree awareness, solid defense and efficient attack.
Intriguing not only because it is relatively unknown as a martial art.
Jeet Kune Do
Invented by Bruce Lee, it arose from the foundations of Bruce Li's Wing Chun training (FYI Wing Chun is a southern Chinese martial art focusing on efficient quick striking as popularised by the movie 'Ip Man'). Unsatisfied with some of the deficiencies of Wing Chun, Bruce Lee supplemented it with an amalgamation of global martial art ideas and techniques, notably a change from the rigid stance of oriental martial art (think Karate) to the fluid movement of kickboxing. There is a movement away from the fixed mindset and techniques of most combat arts (think TKD's reliance on kicks and Boxing) to emphasize a philosophy of individual adaption, self reflection and growth and efficient, lightning fast striking stemming from its Wing Chun roots.
Plus it's Chinese =)
Notable mention must be to Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu Jutsu/Judo for their deadly unconventional effectiveness, especially in the MMA scene. Anderson Silva recognised as the greatest mixed martial artist in the world is a practitioner of both. However, I found the elbow/knee and high kick mentality of Muay Thai also restrictive as well as the 'on the floor' idea of Jiujutsu similarly non-ideal especially against multiple assailants.
.............................
Hmm, I guess the above four disciplines aren't as much which one I should choose as much as it is which one is convenient to fit into phase three Med, and is cheap enough for a poor Med student. It is also something I would love to continue as a doctor.
Now, back to ILP report!
Fascinating talk.
What Teller tried to explain using simple magic tricks is very acute.
Just like Shaun Tan aluded to in The Lost Thing,
So often in life, we fail to notice the ordinary, take it for granted and no longer find wonder in things which we assume as the everyday.
Note. The key word here is assume. So much that we do in life we do with assumptions. We simply ASSUME, We take something for granted, expect something to happen, get used to something happening. We accept stereotypes. Fail to question things which are wrong, out of place, simply because we have become accustomed.
And that is why I find magic, not sword and sorcery magic, but performance magic so fascinating. It teaches us to be skeptical. To question what we apparently see, hear, feel and instead focus on what we DON'T see and what we DIDN'T notice. It teaches us to question our assumptions.
Just like young Garath was taught to ask why, what if, why not but the God Aldur (cudos if you got that reference) and just like he taught his daughter Polgara to do the same.
Ask Why? What if? Why not?
Once again I digress and ramble anyway...
Teller SPEAKS!
If you didn't get that, watch Penn and Teller sometime on Youtube.
If you are interested, this is an interesting watch

Not as much the videos but the magicians.
I wish...
That they'd hurry up and make Half Life 3/Episode 3.
That Firefly wasn't cancelled...and that they'll make a sequel to Serenity!
That David Eddings and David Gemmel were still with us
That there were more GOOD Star Wars films (maybe inspired by Jedi Academy, Thrawn Trilogy or Old Republic canon? Veto animation)
That Peter Jackson will make a good Halo film
That there were less reality TV shows
That people read more books and watched less TV
That virtually reality becomes affordable
=)

Elusive Happiness Part One.
Just had a massive argument with my father.
In simple terms, it was raining and he was furious I didn't pick him up from the train station. I picked him up from the intersection instead. 100 metres from the train station.
So, because he recieved 100 metres worth of drizzle by forgetting to take an umbrella to work, because he probably had a bad day at work and because he characteristically vents this out on his family, I recieved a tirade.
And my sister, passive as always, did not say a single word throughout this entire argument. This is adaptive evolution.
On the dark days, I wonder if families are not built on love but built on spite. Sometimes I wonder, if living in a family is living with a time bomb.
So ends my rant and Elusive Happiness Part One.
What's the secret to living life? - Live Simple, Be Happy and Be Proactive! Twas my new year's resolution and I admit I haven't been following this as much as I have hoped. Time for a change!
