GERTIE BROWN & SAINT SUTTLE “Something Good-Negro Kiss,” the newly discovered William Selig silent film from 1898 is believed to be the earliest cinematic depiction of African-American affection. Thanks to scholars at the University of Chicago and the University of Southern California, the footage is prompting a rethinking of early film history. The performance by cakewalk partners Saint Suttle and Gertie Brown is a reinterpretation of Thomas Edison’s “The Kiss,” featuring May Irwin and John Rice. The film was announced December 12, 2018 as a new addition to the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry—one of 25 selected for their enduring importance to American culture. The 29-second clip is free of stereotypes and racist caricatures, a stark contrast from the majority of black performances at the turn of the century.
Bonne année🎊

Today my not so little sister graduated from one of the top Ivy League law schools in the country. I remember the day I knew she would be a lawyer, we had all gone to Santa Barbara and these awful police officers gave us a wrongful seatbelt ticket. The day we went to court to fight it I had prepared a whole host of reasons why the ticket was implausible but the judge basically said 'take a seat.' Jade got on the stand next and not only did she defend and get herself out of the ticket, but she paved a way for the rest of us to walk free and clear as well. That night we drove back from SB chanting "JADE JD! JADE JD!" Crowing with the glee of having gone up against the system and won. I can't guarantee this'll be my last post about her. That day was certainly just a beginning. I am so excited to see all that @jay_sniktaw has to offer this planet moving forward with courage, passion and kindness. Today we are celebrating the excellence that is Jade Monique Watkins, J.D!!!! JADE JD! JADE JD! I love you so dearly. So, so proud of you. (at NYU School of Law)

Yesterday my eldest niece went to her prom. Prior to, her parents threw her a lavish "champagne" toast and my brother and her shared a dance. She is one of the flyest young ladies I know. 4.7 GPA, she's attending Xavier University in the fall!! I could not be more proud and glad to celebrate with her as she marches boldly into the next chapter of her life. Love you to pieces Paris Watkins. I am so, so proud of you.
