Today it's exactly 61 years ago that Sonny Rollins released his legendary album Saxophone Colossus. Featuring 5 tracks, two of penned by Rollins himself, the album presented Rollins unique take on three standards, “St Thomas”, “You Don't Know What Love Is” and the classic Kurt Weill track “Mack The Knife”. This last track is presented on the album under the name “Moritat”.

To mark this occasion US based tenor player Mike Casey has released a video of his version of “Mack The Knife” recorded on his album “Live At The Side Door”. Read More: http://bit.ly/2spzs0M

Guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel was picked up in 1991 by vibraphonist Gary Burton direct from the Berklee School of Music. Their collaboration made Rosenwinkel one of America's most respected guitarists. Having worked with Joe Lovano and Joe Henderson, to name just a few and praised by colleagues like Pat Metheny and John Scofield, Kurt is a role model for the current generation of jazz guitarists, not only because of his virtuosity, especially because of his openness of mind and his successful rock and hip-hop explorations.

It was the 23rd of March 1965 when the Oscar Peterson Trio took to the stage at Helsinki's 'House of Culture' (Kulttuuritalo). Throughout the 1950's, Peterson's classic trio with Ray Brown on Bass and Herb Ellis on Guitar took the format made famous by Nat King Cole and elevated it to a new level of virtuosity seldom replicated. One of the most important qualities you seek in a Jazz record is the interplay between the musicians, a kind if musical intimacy that survived the transition from the live visual experience to the audio-only format.

With that in mind, many Jazz enthusiasts will recommend Bill Evans Trio’s Live At the Village Vanguard, with Scott Lafaro on Bass and Paul Motian on Drums. It is not only considered one of the best jazz piano trios ever recorded, but the recordings that were made during the trio’s last day of their engagement at the prestigious club on June 25th 1961 capture that interplay like no other record I know. It is one of the saddest tragedies in the history of Jazz that Scott Lafaro died in an automobile accident 10 days after that recording was made, marking it the last time that trio played together. Wayne Shorter Quartet – Live in Paris 2012.

In 2011 and 2012 the Wayne Shorter Quartet made multiple trips to Europe performing at selected venues and festivals. This concert was recorded on November 3rd 2012 at La Salle Pleyel, in Paris. The footage was included as bonus footage bundled with the documentary "The Language of the Unknown" (ArtHaus Musik) directed by Guido Lukoschek, that delves into the psyche and methodology of Shorter via interview material.
