Holland listened to him, the words came out in an almost robotic manner, maybe he said this to everyone he thought had wronged him. Holland consoled herself, her ignorance was not the worst crime committed towards the man.

“Would you like a drink ?”

`She asked, cautiously. Holland knew she couldn’t fix things. But she could fight her stand off nature and try to be kind. He had been through enough, and he had travelled all the way here.

Bucky raised his brow, he didn’t expect her to be so calm, he had been anticipating something more messy. But he tried his best to put his reservations behind.

He nodded, it had been a long day. He would do better to have more allies in the world and she was trying, he could see that she wanted to be free of her past. So did he.

“Why are you always getting yourself into trouble”

“I guess fair enough then”

Bucky shrugged, he felt uneasy standing in the police station. Somewhat surprised that Steve had even let them bring him in. It hadn’t been the worst situation that Bucky had pulled his best friend out of but he still worried.

“Maybe wait until he’s not in public next time, less witnesses”

“Maybe I did, I was young and he was all I had”

Holland’s face was stuck in a deep frown. She hadn’t had a choice, Alexander had been all she had. Even though he was strict, she had enjoyed living with him. The end of her teenaged years were spent with someone she saw as a father figure, someone who had been more of a father than her own. Holly did find herself thinking if she had looked around at the time that she could of figured out something wasn’t right, but she had found a tentative peace knowing she couldn’t change the past.

Bucky took a deep breath, he hadn’t intended to get in this deep. Just say his words and move on like he promised his therapist.

“Well, Holland, I am not the winter soldier anymore, I am James Barnes and you are part of my efforts to make amends”

He spoke, trying to remain calm. It still tested him to hold his anger back, from the way he was treated. But he tried to reason with himself, not everyone had been in deep with HYDRA. He may not have seen her as innocent but he had to forgive, it was the only way he could get better and move on from his past.

Holland spoke before she turned around to face him. She recognised him instantly, she remembered all the stories in the news about him. What the papers said her family had done to him. Holly knew that from time to time people would find her but it still scared her. She had tried so hard to get away from it all, get away from her past.

“I didn’t know, they never told me. Is that good enough for you ?”

She replied sharply, she had just been walking home from a client’s house and hadn’t even sensed she was being followed which put her on edge, she hadn’t been careful enough.

He had been waiting in the street, he’d tracked her to a party of some sorts. He couldn’t go in, after his last visit to Madripoor he was better off staying in the shadows. Less chance of starting a fight and drawing attention to himself.

“How did you not know, did you walk around with your eyes closed. You lived with him”

Bucky thought about Pierce, the way he had treated Bucky like he was an animal. He couldn’t imagine how anyone could want. to willingly spend time with such an awful person.
