Dream series
It's not an exaggeration that the average person has consumed hundreds of forms of media produced in or about NYC. We've been there in movies, books, videogames, songs, paintings, and newspapers. We've tasted NY style pizza, bagels, and hotdogs. How do you produce something unique in a city filled with the most talented people in the world all using the same space as inspiration? Every building is déjà vu inducing, every street familiarly packed with people like extras in the opening shot of Seinfield. The city feels like a simulation, every aspect has been perfectly captured in every form of media. In a place like NYC you can't guarantee uniqueness when producing creative work. You can try though. Somewhere around 15th street and 8th avenue I found inspiration in the rain that suddenly swept over the city. On our way to the Port Authority on 40th street. The street lights painted the length of the street, the windows of the sky scrapers glowed menacingly, and patches of darkness littered the landscape. Every proper NYC resident has an umbrella at the ready as they sprint under awnings and around street corners. That in addition to the madness that envelopes all of Manhattan at every moment. The scene was too alluring not to photograph.

Dissociation
Raccoon Park, Albion, PA at 1am. I’m scared shitless, holding a 6 foot metal tripod with my camera attached to it. Lightning is lighting up the earth around me like a strobe light. My whole body is shaking. I think to myself “This is fucking stupid, they’re going to find me in the morning charred and dead”. 10 minutes before arriving at Raccoon Park I called a friend to let them know where I was at. They insisted I shouldn’t go. As the tripod is being set up I can’t stop shaking. The sound of thunder above causes me to jump. “Regain focus, breath deeply and slowly. Concentrate” Looking through the view finder there’s a moment of clarity “This isn’t worth it at all”. But I’m already here, might as well press the shutter button a few times and see what I get. 15 seconds pass, the shot is done exposing. I chimp the back screen. “Yep, totally not worth it”. At that moment hail starts falling, it’s small and relatively painless. A few pictures later and I’m headed back to my jeep. When I arrive home still shaking off the last of the adrenaline I pull out my laptop and import the pictures I had just taken into Lightroom. “Totally not fucking worth it”
