Joel’s fathers thick accent boomed through the dimly lit area as he sat down with his son. The room loaded with drugs and guns laid all over the place, his father had a fat blunt between his lips as he spoke to the doe-eyed little boy in front of him. Joel didn’t understand then what his father meant, but it was a message for when he got older, one that he’d use to expand himself and the things he planned on doing. Though his father wasn’t around much, Joel held him on a pedestal and learned to walk in his fathers footsteps, going down different paths out of curiosity from which he learned and gained experienced from.

That night was the last time Joel would ever see his father, that night was also one of Joel’s favorite memories. Much to popular dislike, his parents felt that it was better for Joel to experience certain thrills of life at home before he went out and did them himself and didn’t know how to act, these thrills included, drinking and smoking; Joseph and Joel did just that together for the very first and last time. Waking up the following morning after what was a good night to yelled and being abruptly yanked from his sleep with guns pointed in his face but not from locals that his father could handle for barging into his home holding guns to his family’s heads like they had lost their minds but ‘Babylon’ which is slang for the police, including the crime, drug and gun units.

After his fathers arrest, his life started falling into a downward spiral. First it was his mother, then the money that was saved up, and eventually the respect that was once held for ‘The Knights.’ When his mother felt like she couldn’t support the two of them any longer he was sent to New York until she felt she could, shifting from aunt to aunt in an attempt to find his place — which he never did and instead of continuing to go through it; he learned how to support himself at a young age.
