I think it is very important to point out that as much as we force something at someone, they will only take part if they choose too.  But at the same time at least they are still being exposed to a healthier option and maybe one day they will see past the looks and realize people are trying to encourage them to make a healthier choice?

FDA checks up on supplements

According to an article in The Chicago Tribune, in 2008 the FDA found many hygienic issues with supplement distributors and operations and have formed new compliance rules for dietary supplement producers.  According to the FDA’s statistics, 1 in 4 dietary supplement producers received a letter notifying the company that if changes were not made mandatory enforcement would arrive to ensure the changes were made.  This is kind of scary to think that this branch of the FDA is in some ways, not reviewing what they are endorsing very well.  This article was published in 2012.  According to the FDA, the distributors and producers have changed their facilities significantly and are meeting the new guidelines.  This is encouraging considering it only took two years to correct problems that were probable more significant then we are aware of.

Positivity Towards Supplements

I was searching the Internet to find positive articles on dietary/nutritional supplements and it seems that they just don’t exist!  It’s interesting to think that supplements can take up aisles in stores, but according to the Internet it is a waste of money and can in fact impede on your health.  According to LiveScience.com, there are only a small population of people that should be taking and using supplements; women in the childbearing age group, postmenopausal women and, non-smokers with onset macular degeneration (an eye disease).  So how are all of these supplements staying on the shelves if they are not really benefiting much of the population?  It seems the general census is by receiving nutrients through food and not pills.

Nutritional Supplements aiding Cancer Patients

Nutritional supplements are useful to a variety of people, including cancer patients.  Often times undergoing cancer can take away an appetite to eat, but maintaining nutritional levels or maintaining them as much as possible is important.  However, depending on the circumstances nutritional therapy may not affect the outcome of the cancer or the treatment.  Supplements are encouraged in cancer patients’ diets by drinking nutritional supplement shakes such as instant breakfast mixes, canned or powdered shakes.  These products are a good source of calories with little to no preparation, which is convenient especially in situations where you feel weak and do not have an appetite.

I think attention needs to be brought to fad-diets because people are just basing their information off of the media.  When these diets could be hurting them instead of helping them and in turn discourage them from being healthy in general.

I read an article about nutritional supplements by the Mayo Clinic.  It discussed how not everyone needs to be taking nutrition supplements.  The article emphasized how most of your nutritional needs should be met through your diet, but in some cases people can benefit from nutrition supplements such as the elderly.

            Real foods provide your body with more then just one specific vitamin or mineral; there are many nutrients that are provided by fresh, real food.  Supplements are targeting one specific vitamin or mineral in each capsule.

            Populations that could need nutritional supplements are women who are pregnant or may become pregnant.  Also adults over the age of 50 should take a nutrition supplement.  There are other scenarios where it would be appropriate for people to take supplements.
