MJ and Tony don’t talk as much as they did when she worked for him, but she still cares about his wellbeing. When his name had flashed as one of the deceased from the attack, Mary Jane had cried unabashedly. Too many friends lost their lives too early. “It’s too bad you had to die to get to this point,” the redhead isn’t totally sold. “They’re not paying you to say that, are they?”

Hearing the name Peter Parker and death hit too close to home. If MJ could, she’d scoop every variant up and keep them from harm. “I’m glad to hear you’re okay.” She can’t stop thinking about her own Peter being wiped from existence. “I think you should think about it as much or little as you want. It’s whatever makes you feel comfortable.”

You’ve got the face for it.” Jake smirked softly at her through the rearview mirror, but the compliment was still genuine. “There’s not much I’d change about this city, but I could handle the rent goin’ down a little. It’s outrageous what they’ll charge for a shoebox apartment.” And yet Jake still ate it up anyways. There was something so charming about New York that he couldn’t get enough of, and he couldn’t imagine himself living anywhere else. “That’s acting purgatory as far as I’m concerned. You’ve already got that going for you. When you land your big break, make sure you remember the humble cab driver who took you where you needed to go.”

“I’m not supposed to say anything,” MJ divulged. “But we’re obviously friends now and this is taxi/passenger privilege. I booked a role!” It’s a good one as well. Starring, even. Her last starring role had Mysterio as the director. If she could get through that shoot, she can get through any. “God, same. It’s almost like they don’t want people living here.” Everyone in New York must be a masochist by definition. “Of course. You’ll be the first name in my speech. What, uh, is your name?”

“He goes to ESU,” MJ offers up before wiping at her eyes. “He’s also doing photography for the Daily Bugle. I can help you look, if you’d like. God knows I need something to take my mind off of... Yeah.”

Daisy noticed the solemn approach almost immediately, and her stomach dropped when MJ mentioned Peter’s name. It looked like the other woman was on the verge of tears, and Daisy didn’t like that. Not at all. She froze in place for a few seconds before her brows furrowed together and she just shook her head. “MJ, what’re you.. What is it?” She just saw Peter the other day, didn’t she? What could he have possibly gotten himself into in between her time in Connecticut to now?

“He’s gone.” There it is. Two words spoken aloud. MJ can’t bring herself to say dead. That’s just too much right now. She swallows thickly. “There’s something going on with the Web of Life and Destiny. Jessica Drew was severed first, and then Peter — Peter was —” She can’t say anything more. The tears do fall then, hot and fast. “He’s gone.”

“Hey, you still got the paycheck for it, no? That’s all that really matters.” Jake smiled at her as he continued. “Not many people can say they’ve been in a movie.”

“I did, and it barely covered my rent. Gotta love living in NYC, right? Manhattan rent is through the roof.” Maybe she could save money if she moved to another borough, but MJ doesn’t want to. She’s born and bred in Queens. There’s nothing wrong with where she used to live. She’s just gotten used to living in the main part of the city. “In New York it’s surprisingly common. In Wisconsin, I’d be an anomaly. I’m not interested in the Midwest, though, so I’ll take being just another face. At least I’ve moved past the dead body in the cop show phase.”

“You look a lot like someone I used to know.” Tears pricked her eyes. “Nineteen.” She had been meeting with the younger Peter to talk him through her Peter’s death. It felt right to let him know personally that his variant had been severed from the web and died. “I know a lot of Peter Parkers.”

“Hill’s been taken care of.” When Daisy realized how final that sounded, she raised her eyebrows and quickly backtracked. “She’s not dead, though. Just on a mandatory medical leave.”

Her heart is in her stomach. Every step is painful, but Mary Jane makes them all the same. “Daisy.” Her lips fail to form a smile. “I’m glad she’s been taken care of. I know there’s been a lot going on, but there’s something I needed to tell you. Something I thought should be done in person.” It’s then that the tears fall from her eyes. “It’s about Peter.”

peter was already on his second slice by the time mj responded, spider-man metabolism fully kicking in at this point. even between bites, he still couldn’t help but stare.

her dress, her hair, her face, all of it — and watching her enjoy the pizza along with him, fully and unapologetically, peter had never been more in love than in this very moment.

her comment only sealed the deal further, “i love you too— like, a stupid amount,” he mumbled past the crust of his second slice before realizing he probably shouldn’t be in the middle of chewing while asking a question like this.

“move in with me. i mean, not here necessarily— this place is a dump. but let’s find a place together, yeah?” he asked expectantly, a hopeful smile on his face and the third slice now in hand, poised to be lifted to his mouth when the moment resolved itself.

Move in with me. Four words and so much meaning. Move in with me. Of course the thought has crossed Mary Jane’s mind. She’s in a long term committed relationship. Moving in with Peter would be the natural first step. It’s not like they’d have to get married right away ( although that’s also something she’s thought of ) or have kids. They’d keep doing their lives. They’d just be doing it together.

Setting her slice down, MJ angles her body to face Peter fully. “If you want to live with me, there’s a few things you have to know,” she warns. “I will take all of the counter space in the bathroom and likely the closet. I’ve been told I’m a bed hog, but you already know that.” It’s not like they haven’t slept over together. They have a lot. Now the idea of a perpetual sleep over is being offered.

MJ doesn’t know why she’s nervous. Maybe it’s the fact that she’s never lived with a partner before. She’s always had a space to retreat to after dates and unwind. It’s not to say that she won’t be able to if Peter was there, but it’ll definitely be different. That doesn’t stop her from nodding her head.

“Yeah, yeah. You know what? Let’s do this. Apartment shopping in  New York is going to be a bitch, but you’re worth it. We’re worth it.”

MJ blushes. She’s been acknowledged before, but it still feels good. “You must be incredibly sick of seeing my face. Between the two of us, the movie isn’t very good.”

“Hey, no worries. Neither am I, apparently.” Marc held up his phone, leaving the screen facing him and hoping that she assumed he was on speaker phone if she did hear him talking out loud. He really needed to work on that. Maybe he’d start wearing an earbud or something. “You look familiar.”

Thankfully, her phone wasn’t cracked. MJ wanted an upgrade but was in no hurry to get one. Even though she was finally at a place where she could afford it without concern, there was that old broke college kid dropout in her that felt guilty making big purchases. None of that mattered in the moment, however. MJ grinned slightly before brushing some hair back from her face. “I’m an actress, but -- wait, actually. We have met. You helped me run lines! I’m glad you ditched the weird British accent.”
