Sunset in the Lisbon harbor.
Yesterday I got to meet this cute little fur ball.
It's cool to know that I am the one flying this plane. She looks better with the gear up. 😘

That time of year again.
Home is whenever I'm with you.
West Coast Trail
Start at Bamfield at the North end and Port Renfrew at the South... 75km hike. Will take approximately 5-7 days.
They happen twice a day at both ends, at 10am and 2pm. It is here you get your permit and your waterproof map of the trail. The Trail is only open from May 1-Sept 30. Make reservations for the trail online or by phone starting on January 8th ish of each calendar year.
West Coast Trail campsites are all on the beaches, and there are some ‘amenities’ at these sites. ‘Amenities’ is a loose term, which in WCT terms mean compost outhouses, bear lockers for your food bags, and a fresh water creek. But if we want dry land... or a place to be covered if it's raining we may need to find other locations than on the beach.
There are two places to get food on the trail. One is Chez Monique’s, a West Coast Trail (IR 6, around KM44).
The other place to is the crab shack at Nitinat Narrows, also on an Aboriginal Reservation (IR 3, KM 32). You have to take a water taxi across the Narrows
Every person must pay the Backcountry Use and Overnight Camping permit, regardless of how long you are on the trail for. Current West Coast Trail fees will take $127.50CDN per person. If you make a reservation, it costs $24.50CDN per person. Water taxis at Gordon River and Nitinat Narrows both cost $16 each (totalling$32), but you pay for this at the same time as your permit ahead of time.
There is the West Coast Trail Express bus that makes things convenient, taking hikers from Victoria and Nanaimo to either entry point, plus the midway entry, Nitinat Junction, daily.
Things to get
good hiking socks, and easy to dry clothes. Rain gear. and gaiters. Hiking poles. Vaseline. Deodorant. And a more suitable tent that can handle being wet. Also alot of rope. To hang up clothes and food. touque, gloves, and warm leggings and fleece zip-ups to relax in camp in. Maybe a blanket for inside the sleeping bag? Cards? satellite phone... better first aid kits. Write out your emergency contact numbers and have them in a water-safe bag in your bag, just in case! Toilet paper. Fire starters. A small wash cloth and some environment friendly soap for evening wash up. Instant coffee? (Starbucks maybe)
As for food... can I get a dehydrator from someone... and make my own food?
oatmeal for breakfasts and then can do on the go lunches of protein bars, trail mix, and dried fruit. Dinners can be pasta or quinoa, with either lentils or chicken, along with a reward of a Snickers bar every day.. Maybe chick peas to gobble whenever needed, trail mix, cinnamon sugar to flavour the oatmeal, and cocoa and tea for warm camp site drinks... get mitch to bring that Yerba tea... and some sort of powder sugar? Pack chocolate and cheese? Electrolyte powder drink crystals (Hydration is key!!)
Clothing to pack
Sports bra (Doubled as a swim suit). Regular bra (for camp). Quick dry underwear (3 pairs). Regular underwear. Two pairs of Smart Wool Socks (Bring more than two! Bring like 5 pairs)Two pairs of normal socks (for camp)Two tank tops (one for hiking and one to stay dry for camp)Long sleeved thermal shirt. Zip-up fleece. Zip away pants...? Rain jacket and pants? Flip-flops. Warm hat. Baseball hat maybe those bando things to protect my ears. Gloves (lightweight gloves while hiking.... keeps your hands protected while climbing the ladders). A compression sack for it
Cooking
Pot with lid. Butane stove and canister (only need a small canister, don’t take a big ones). Swiss Army knife. Water filter or iodine tabs. Plastic mug. Utensil....? Mitch mentioned those more expensive ones.. it's well worth it the cheap one broke after 2 uses. !). Lighter. Two 1-liter water bottles (plus I had the 1.5 liter pouch for my water filter)...Camelback?
It's scarf time♡
Sept 23,2017
I know my work can be challenging, but mostly its boring- filled with repetition, bad habits, long days, vibration, noise, and lots of coffee that makes you have to pee when your mid flight. Most days this is exactly what happens... absolutely nothing.
In today’s day in age we are blessed with the training, the tools, good maintenance, and an amazing safety management system in place to make the work place more safe. (as long as your with a company that gives a shit) This career is full of endless boredom punctuated by moments of terror. Pilots train for hours and hours so that when it comes down to the split second decisions and crew resource management, you hope all the work is enough to make sure you see the people that you love another day.
At work today, on my flight back from Edmonton, we had a message appear up on on ED. We dealt with it accordingly, and continued the flight. The flight was only a quick 30 minute flight, and it was heading to a maintenance base so once we dealt with the issue it was a no brainer to continue. Once our wheels touched down and when we entered the apron, we got another engine caution light illuminate. Which got me thinking. What if we were further away from this maintenance base? Would the amber caution light of come on in flight? Would we of done the drill and would we of shut down the engine? Sure it wasn’t the exact situation of the engine shut downs previous, but whose to say it cant happen, given the planes mechanical history?
It makes me really think long and hard about it, because it was this very scenario that while studying for my first recurrent, I realized that I had forgotten the memory items for this very indication. It is not your regular shut down. So if faced with the scenario that the crews who initially had this problem, and attempted the engine shut down, would I of been able to preform my required duties?
The answer..... two weeks ago, I dont think so. This passed week and a half I’ve really started studying for my reccurrent and really going over normal and non-normal/emergency situations and I had forgetting this one memory item. How could I of forgotten this memory item? I grilled it into my brain months ago. Maybe it was just hidden up there in my mess of a brain? I have since then gone over every memory item and been going through different emergency situations with my captains each flight and talked about different scenarios they have seen in sim to start preparing myself. If faced with the scenario of performing those memories items again, once I took the time to review my procedures, could I preform my required duties?
The answer is ..... Yes
Aviation: is littered with moments of boredom punctuated by moments of terror. To all my fellow aviators, I wish you all long and boring career in aviation. Keep up the studies and go over items and drills you haven’t done in a while. Even if its as little as reviewing how to set up an RNAV STAR. One day deleting a selected altitude will not be like every other day and you will break the minimums. Just because something worked one day, doesn’t mean its going to continue to work for you. In the event where you need minuscule stuff like that to work, it wont.
The first time we held hands we were 16, on a yellow school bus. We were giving the opportunity to give ourselves a little flash back. Yellow school bus, my love and holding hands. The only difference between then and now, was our butts didn't fit on the bench anymore. 😅
