El Boeing B-747 ha servido como avión de pasajeros, carguero, uso gubernamental, militar y como medio de transporte para el orbitador del transbordador espacial utilizado por la Nasa. Dos versiones del B-747 fueron usados para este último propósito. Un Boeing B-747-100 y B-747-100SR, con diferencias en la capacidad de carga. Para el B-747-100SR, el peso máximo de despegue es de 600,000 LBS (272,155klg). El orbitador de la Nasa despega del centro espacial Kennedy en Florida y a su regreso a la tierra, aterriza en una pista de las tres posibles pistas disponibles para este propósito. California, Nuevo México y en el propio centro espacial Kennedy. El último lanzamiento del programa fue realizado en 2011, hoy en día se utiliza la nueva tecnología propuesta por Elon Musk y su empresa SpaceX. The NASA orbiter takes off from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida and for landing back on earth it lands on a runway three possible locations. California, New Mexico and the Kennedy space center itself. The last launch of the program was performed in 2011, today the new technology proposed by Elon Musk and his company SpaceX is used for international space station supply.
