TLDR: PSY is layering a lot more on than is obvious in just watching his videos without knowing Korean or Korean culture. You might care about that. You might not. This video is silly either way.

Here’s the thing about PSY:

A lot of us non-Korean folk will miss tons of the details, but he is actually making awesome societal commentary, much of it applicable to cultures far beyond Korea.

Maybe Gangnam Style got popular because of a silly dance and a catchy tune. Maybe Gentleman will get popular because of a silly dance and a catchy tune. Does it matter how they get popular? They’re both excellent songs with delightful videos and not just brainless pop, even if those of us who don’t know Korean can’t tell that without looking up translation, and even when you do, the real clincher is in how he plays with the sound of the Korean lyrics so he seems to be saying one thing to an English-speaking listener, but he’s actually saying another, and I think the only way we’re ever going to get even close to understanding the layers is if someone puts the phonetic Korean and the English translation together on top of the video as it’s happening.

There are layers. What he’s communicating is not the words that he’s saying, or what he’s showing, or… I can’t explain it. He’s a fucking onion, that man.

The other thing is, you don’t have to know any of that, or understand a single thing other than exactly what is in front of your face to see that this is a silly video that is fun to watch.

Yes, there's actually more than what you hear in the lyrics. And there are these rich old men, one of whom wears a military style jacket. Psy kicks away a no parking sign, an order. The twenty-somethings fill the library not because of some academic goals but to succeed in the overly competitive job market. There's a huge place looking like a panopticon where everybody dances. And lastly Psy dances alone on the bridge at sunset.
