“A lot of people assume that actors are really gregarious, outgoing, outspoken and confident people all the time. Some of the most interesting actors are quite the opposite – they’re introspective and don’t like talking to people and are incredibly shy and nervous. I’m a bit of a combination of both. I often think I get a little too loud and gregarious, but sometimes people, when they get a little bombastic, are doing it to hide parts of them that aren’t so outgoing.“

Although he is busy working in LA and was unable to attend Wednesday night’s awards ceremony in Sydney, Joel was named GQ Australia’s 2016 Actor of the Year. Congratulations!

This has been a particularly busy year for Joel, with the release three very different films: ‘Jane Got a Gun,’ ‘Midnight Special,’ and ‘Loving;’ and he shows no sign of slowing down any time soon, with two films already in the can (‘It Comes at Night’ and brother Nash’s as-yet-untitled feature starring David Oyelowo), with ‘Bright’ and ‘Red Sparrow’ currently underway.

Although his hectic, peripatetic life might exhaust a lesser man, Joel’s constant curiosity and eagerness for new experiences keep him rolling along:

“It doesn’t matter if I am working overseas on a film or working in Sydney on a TV show or Melbourne on a play, as long as the writing is good and I feel I am actually learning something, I am happy."

Although he was busy promoting “Loving” in the States when he was named the 2016 Actor of the Year by GQ Australia this week, Joel did send a video thank you message that was shown at the awards ceremony in Sydney on Wednesday night. In the video, he expresses his gratitude, and extends particular praise toward his fellow awardees who were recognized for their charitable and philanthropic work.

Australia still has not given same-sex couples the right to legally marry. The absurdity of what happened to Richard and Mildred [Loving], and the absurdity of what’s happening today, is that the decisions being made to limit the freedoms of others are made by people who often will never meet the individuals they are affecting.”

Joel chatting with the media and participating in a Q&A session about “Loving” at the Mill Valley Film Festival on Sunday evening.

Speaking of writer/director Jeff Nichols’ quiet, restrained film, Joel explained that “it’s not full of speeches about what characters are feeling…We watch it happen. It lives in the silence, and what is not able to be said.”

“Edgerton, fresh off of Nichols’ Midnight Special, may have found his best role yet in Richard [Loving]. The character is stoic and withdrawn by nature, but Edgerton communicates everything he needs to with a level gaze or a furrowed brow.”

“As Richard, [he] is aloof, yet concerned. He stays stone-faced, yet his eyes, and overall demeanor still maintain an undying love and  I’d-die-for-you affection for Mildred.”

“The real challenge for me as Richard was that Richard was so shy of the cameras, so shy of any public interest in his case. He wasn’t a poster child for the revolution, he never wanted to be. He wanted to stay in love and married to Mildred.“

"And the risk was that that reluctance to be a public figure would translate as sort of an embarrassment or a shame, but he didn’t have the words to really fight the law or express himself in the way that he really wanted to. All he felt was that something was very wrong, but he didn’t know what to do about it.”

“We’re best friends, we work together a lot, I’m very proud of him. We’re very close, we talk all the time. We live together when we’re in the same town. We’ve got to work on a lot of projects together that either we’ve made ourselves or we’ve worked on other people’s films together. I’ve been his stunt double before. There’s no competition between us. I think we got all our fighting out when we were little kids.”
