The Great Falls of the Potomac. Site of a canal backed by George Washington after the Revolution. Washington was president of the Patowmack Canal Company until he became President of the United States. The goal of the canal (and others) was to make the Potomac navigable to the Ohio River Valley. Numerous shallows and falls made it difficult. The canal wasn’t finished until 1801, two years after Washington died.
The company town, Matildaville, was located next to the canal and ruins of its structures remain, including the spacious foundation of the canal master’s residence.
The Patowmack Canal Company folded in 1828.
