About Me

I'm a technical product leader with more than 15 years of experience leading small teams to develop hardware/software systems at the forefront of innovation.

Approach: Hands-on. I love to be on-site with customers, walking a mile in their shoes. I bring my camera with me, shooting and editing video to give the team context. I know how to draw with CAD software, prototype in the machine shop, solder, and analyze data. These skills give me the technical background to prototype myself and empathy to guide technical teams.

Background: My degree is in physics, but most of my undergrad energy went toward founding the university's auto racing team. I started my career with a variety of engineering and technical roles in aerospace R&D. Now I'm moving into Product roles.

Perspective: I've come to see that communication is the key to maturing new technology into products that enable customers. My recent career break has been focused on developing communication skills via community and marketing roles.

Direction: I'm seeking a Product Leadership role with an innovative team that values communication.

As the first product and technical hire at an early-stage drone startup, I’ve been responsible for designing, building, and flight-testing the company’s aerial systems. Our first prototype has more payload capacity and range than the big players.

Prototype 1

I designed, built, and flight tested the first Fly ZOOZ prototype aircraft. It's built around off-the-shelf parts, integrated with FlightOps software, and can deliver a 7 pound package up to 6 miles away (i.e. more than any competitor).

Freefly Systems

Sr Technical Product Manager

Woodinville, WA - December 2020 to March 2022

Launched Astro, Freefly's first industrial drone, and the Astro Map gimbaled photogrammetry camera. Gathered input from beta testers, distilled requirements, guided engineering team, performed testing, wrote user documentation and shot videos, formed partnerships with payload integrators. Created open payload mount interface dev kits.

Smart Dovetail

Payload quick release provided as an open standard, enabling external partners to treat Freefly aircraft as open platforms for their payloads. Worked with internal and external engineers, created documentation and video, evangelized to recruit partners.

Johns Hopkins University

Founder, Medical Drones Team

Developed tools and techniques to transport diagnostic samples with a variety of aircraft types. Published first clinically validated drone transport trials. Set distance record of 161 miles. I handled aircraft and engineering. Digested medical requirements to develop aircraft and cargo systems. In-house design and prototyping. Vendor vetting. Flight operations. Designed rural and urban deployments for domestic and international customers.

Medical Cargo Drone

This electric VTOL aircraft system was developed to transport medical cargos and be operated by non-technical personnel. Cargo system is patent pending.

I collected information about customer needs in the field, distilled aircraft performance requirements, worked with a manufacturing partner to create an aircraft based on the Latitude Engineering HQ10, designed and fabricated custom components, and performed testing. 85 km range with 1 kg payload.

Uganda Consulting

Visited the Kalangala Islands in of Uganda to work with the Infectious Diseases Institute on assessing feasibility of transporting doagnostic samples by drone.

This has become an ongoing project, and we're looking forward to first flights this winter.

Patent Pending

Fuselage For Transporting Medical Cargo In An Unmanned Aerial Vehicle

A fuselage may include a base plate including one or more attachment points for securing the base plate to an unmanned aerial vehicle, a cover removably securable to the base plate, and a cargo compartment disposed in a space between the base plate and the cover at a balance point of the unmanned aerial vehicle. Accordingly, a container to transport cargo may be positioned within the cargo compartment at the balance point of the unmanned aerial vehicle, and the cargo compartment and/or the container may include one or more devices to regulate an environment within the container (e.g., with respect to temperature, vibrations, humidity, and/or the like).

M210 Cargo Roof Rack

Designed and built a cargo system for DJI M210. It accomodates a standard biohazard shipping container, surrounded by an impact absorbing structure. Also accomodates generic payload mounting.

DeltaQuad Evaluation

(Use low volume. Lots of wind noise.)

We purchased this aircraft for evaluation, but found that performance did not meet manufacturer specifications. The first unit crashed due to undersize wires in the power harness. The second unit was unable to achieve a solid cellular connection.

Long Distance Transport of Blood Samples

Human blood samples for diagnosis were transported by unmanned aircraft under temperature control in the Arizona desert. Samples were collected at University of Arizona in Tucson, driven to a flying range, flown for 3 hours, and driven to the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale. Total distance was 129 driving miles and 161 flying miles.

I designed and built the temperature controlled sample box, formed a partnership with aircraft manufacturer Latitude Engineering, worked with Latitude to integrate the sample box into the airframe, and executed the transport mission.

Findings published in the American Journal of Clinical Pathology in September 2017
