FUTURE PROSPECT
Erin Frye, Jellowstone Records July 16, 2016
Future Prospect has been together for just over a year, and they are lighting up the Richmond music scene. A part of the Jellowstone and Ropeadope families, theyâre young, talented, and eager to take over.
Theyâre a collective of musicians united by passion: Trey Sorrells - Alto Sax, Jackson Shurlds - Trumpet, Ryan Moses - Keys, Jacob Ungerleider - Keys, Morgan Burrs - Guitar, Brandon Lane - Bass, and CleandrĂ© Foster - Drums.
The majority of your band members are right out of college. Is it intimidating that youâve had such immediate success locally?
Brandon says, âIt is humbling. We have all of these musicians and artists we aspire to be, and look up to, and they are singing our praises and recommending us and complimenting usâŠitâs really humbling.â
Trey: âYounger bands are starting to form, and theyâre telling us that we inspired them to form. We want to influence other musicians to show them that itâs not about age or experience, itâs about what you can do on stage, really.â
CleandrĂ©: âI almost see it as a responsibility â to carry the torch for the next generation. There are already a few younger musicians I am already feeling like everyone needs to watch out for, because theyâre incredible. Itâs a responsibility to carry this on.â
You may have seen CleandrĂ© sitting in on drums for Corey Fonville in KINGS and Butcher Brown while heâs been out of the country. Corey (of Butcher Brown fame) wanted to foster a younger band to dominate the music scene. He has been mentoring Trey Sorrells for years, and brought Trey, CleandrĂ©, Morgan, and Ryan together. When they brought in a bass prayer, Brandon Lane, they were looking for someone dedicated and unique. Then, they added Jacob and Jackson. They all studied music at Virginia Commonwealth University, except for Brandon and Jacob who studied at Virginia State University and the University of Vermont, respectively.
Most of the band members are full-time musicians, with part-time jobs and teaching gigs on the side. They recently played a Michael Jackson Tribute show at The Camel â it was nearly sold out. Theyâve also recently played the Bootleggers Ball, Friday Cheers, and many other coveted gigs in the city.
Brandon says, âThese guys are so dedicated and they really really worked hard for the Michael Jackson cover show. It was such a huge success. This was the longest show weâve ever had.â
What are your goals for the next year?
Trey: âWeâd love to be playing packed shows 3-4 nights per week, and to travel. Weâd like to quit our side projects and focus solely on Future Prospect.â
Collectively: âWeâd like a Grammy. Weâd love to go out of the country, or at least play shows on the West Coast.â
Jackson: âThereâs this golden goal we are all working towards. This band is driven. Our styles are diverse, and we are passionate. As soon as I heard the band, I wanted to be part of it. We're all prepared to take this band to the highest level of musicianship possible.â
Has it been great having the support of the Jellowstone Records family around you?
Collective: âYes.â
CleandrĂ©: âI did a few shows with KINGS recently and it was honestly so great just to talk to them about where theyâve been and what to do, what to push for, how to manage your money, your time.â
What inspires you to play?
Trey: âWeâve all been told that we couldnât do something in life, and thatâs a really big thing, we have a big motivation to prove that wrong. For example you know, Brandon is an electric bass player who can play JAZZâŠhe was told he could not play jazz on an electric bass, and he has more technique then anyone Iâve ever met. But, for me personally, the way music can reach and touch people is really what inspires me the most, and why my sound has developed the way it has. I really just play music because I love it. Music consumes me.â
CleandrĂ©: âMy family drives me. I come from a family of strictly musicians. My dad owns a sound engineering company, my mom sings, everyoneâs a musician. They inspire me so much to keep going. They see where Iâve come from, playing in the church at nine-years old, and when I was younger I would get booted off of the set because I was too young, or they would push me away and tell me I needed to develop moreâŠbut my dad always encouraged me to keep doing it, keep doing more. Itâs a part of me when I wake up in the morning, and the last thing I do before I go to sleep.
The sky is the limit if you don't put any boundaries on yourself. Youâve just gotta really really go for it.â
Brandon: âWhat inspires me the most is pushing towards the continuation and revitalization of REAL music. There are lot of fakers putting out processed music these days. There are a lot of people in the limelight who donât have the talent to match their fame. My main goal has always been to preserve, write, play, and produce real music in an effort to preserve authentic music, of genuine soul expression.â
Jackson: âA lot of us in the band are also very spiritual, so thatâs an inspiration for us. Honestly, I think you can tell through our music, itâs really emotional sometimes. Itâs like something greater is in the room with us, especially when we record. My perspective is, just share the loveâŠif you canât find any, look up.â
What makes this project different:
Trey: âThis is the first band Iâve ever been in where I didn't feel like I was carrying the band on my back. Being in a band that plays at such a high caliber, itâs just so refreshing. Being around all of them, especially Brandon, has helped me harmonically. Iâm hearing stuff now that I was not able to do 6 months ago. In this band, everybody wants to shine together like the sun, we bring it every time. We work so hard, and donât stop. Thatâs why we are called âFuture Prospect,â because we inspire each other to get better and be better.â
Brandon: âThis is the first band that Iâve played in where it feels like weâre all working together cohesively, with chemistryâŠitâs incredible. Itâs like the dream team.â
CleandrĂ©: âIt was like that from the jump, from our first downbeat. This was supposed to be something.â
Trey: âMorgan isnât here for this interview, but heâs also worth noting. Heâs only 19 years old, and heâs beyond fantastic. Weâre a young band who wants to be better for other people.â
Tell us about the new album:
Jackson: âEveryoneâs pretty young in the group, but weâre so rooted in the styles of music we grew up listening to, and it creates this hodgepodge or, potluck if you will, of melodies and sounds. I would go so far as to say that the band as a collective plays old soul music with a modern twist or flair to it. Itâs groove music. This new album is made to groove with, to take our time. Making more and more music just solidifies us.â
Both Brandon and Jackson are heading off to school in the fall for higher music education (on full rides). They plan to continue recording and making music with this band. For each member interviewed here, Future Prospect is their #1 project.
Jackson: âIâm on board with this band. Iâm following this golden goal with them to play music all day and all night. I would never get tired of it.â
EP was recorded at Jellowstone Studio, upcoming album was recorded at Montrose.
The album release show is Friday, August 12th at The Camel.
