Fundraiser for Podcast:

The first quarter of the twenty-first century has passed. The art practices have changed a lot through this time. Art has started hosting almost all the subjects around the globe. In such an environment , art criticism has to take now forms as well and assign new mediums for it. In such times, podcasts on art have become a medium that can provide the art news faster and globally. The print media has its own place to fill the gaps in the whole ecosystem of art news.

In 2018, I envisioned a platform for art journalism ‘The Independent Art Journal’ (TIAJ). In 2021, I started to explore the blockchain technology as an artist to understand the possibility of it with art. In 2022, I came up with the idea of making a series of interviews of creative individuals from art field with the Twitter spaces titled ‘Dialogue’ under The Independent Art Journal (TIAJ). It has finished its first 10 issues. Later it became a podcast and is archived on Spotify. Recently I decided to expand the subjects for the podcast by including conversations and reportage apart from interviews with the vision of documentation and archiving of contemporary art-practices, curatorial practices, writing practices and more.

For this purpose, TIAJ is raising funds for the podcast Dialogue through crowdfunding.

The aim is to raise 1,25,000 INR.

Raised funds will be used towards buying gadgets, travels, visits, field notes, sound recordings, sound editing, designing and honorariums.

Les femmes de Kant: Concept Note

Desire is a human feeling which brings human beings together to build an intimate relationship. Human being have this feeling throughout the life starting from teenage.

Human manifest this feeling to the self when they mentally or physically or to human of the sex one is inclined towards is exposed to individual.

Everyone mentally visualize or create the imagery of the sex they are interested in to menifest their desires to. This imagery of desire help individuals create a bond with themselves as well in the form of self love or solo sex.

In the series 'Les femmes de kant' I am creating my interests of desire. A series of female nudes  created with Ai which is trained on my drawings. I have also worked on images by myself.

These artworks are the products of male gaze expressing male desire. These artworks are the embodiment of male desire towords femininity

An artwork can never replace a human being. It can only help an artist to express and in this case male/masculine desire.

Your Existence is Canceled:

One of the writing from the mid 20 rth century claims that a platform (more like today’s social media platform) where people can come together and express their views will be a threat to a functioning democracy.

Let’s try to understand what that means. We have many social media platforms and significant amount of data to understand it in depth. We are also aware of trolling and cancel culture and have many examples at hand.

In Psychology, there is a phenomenon Stereotypes, which happens to human beings and its quite normal as well as it helps humans to store vast amount of information reduced to Stereotypes. The problem arises when humans assign negative characters to some stereotypes and apply it to whole group a stereotype represents. That’s how the biases arise. Interestingly if we break a stereotype, while the process of it we end up establishing another.

Now lets bring the In-group and Out-group phenomena in to the conversation from the social psychology. It says that individuals form groups on behalf of the similarities such as; gender, sex, beliefs, ideologies, religion, region, ethnicities , etc. The process of forming a group happens very organically. This way several group emerge and hence the in-group and outgroup phenomena also emerges. Other individuals who are not from an individual’s group is not only seen out from the group but also seen as from another groups. Some of the groups may exist in conflicts with each other because of what ideology they represent.

Forming of the groups is a natural process, since every individual wants to find ttheir own herd in order to gain a sense of security and intimacy. The first and smallest unit of it could be the couples and families. The problem from this phenomena also emerges when ideology of the group is taken to the extreme.

Now with knowledge of stereotypes and in-group and out-group phenomena one can easily trace the roots of Cancel Culture in relation to social media platforms.

In democracy, to get the power one needs to influence the majority. And that can easily be done by learning how to influence the majority. And for that data is available through the social media platforms. One also needs keep in mind that majority is not always right. And to cancel an individual one only needs to mobilize the group which exists in the conflict to the group the individual represents. Here the task is to cancel an individual, rather than gaining the power, thus it will be easier and faster.

In an environment where diverse opinions are way of life, it’s impossible to avoid the conflicts. So to create the possibilities of dialogues with most conflicting opinions individuals have to learn to listen by dropping the biases, let the other explain and hold the dialogues in most dignified manner.

Shaming, trolling, boycotting does not work. Most, these are the form of primitive acts to indulge in. If An individual’s intention is to shut the other up and glorify their own acts by mocking the other and atisfy their sadism, that is concerning, and that is concerning for everyone.

If people start to enjoy the humiliation of the other, something is wrong. We are loosing our direction from a civilized society to a self indulged individuals.

Abstract Matters: Curatorial Note

Abstract, as medium gives lot freedom for exploration but also create the route difficult as process is very fluid. So the embodiment of abstract is necessary to convey it the another. But then the a problem arises, it's embodiment will take away something from it!

Abstract Art also known as Non-representational Art solved the problem of not limiting the viewer only on the represented figures or objects in a composition but also using the wider knowledge of viewer and dissociatimg from immediate reality in order to bring the unknown to the wider conversation.

It can be phrase as abstract was not the concern, it was the unknown, because by nature its abstract and thus can be threatening. It needed the courage of strong, wisdom of mature and curiosity of child.

Glorious Plus Concept Note:

To inform oneself about the art one has to look into art history. Interestingly, the big chunks of art history are filled with the female nudes. It's like the female nudes beared the burden of representing human race into the art history.

Every era brings its own ideal female beauty with the subjects of that era. It's aspects changed through the a lot. Sometimes repeating the old female ideals as well.

In recent era a new ideal of female beauty is being developed. The ideal is being repeated in almost all kind of media. Social media pushes it further a process of becomes faster. If this is not the height of it, it's not far from here. Before the ideal starts to decline as an artist I wanted grab my opportunity to document it with my art practice.

In these techo-hybrid times. The best medium to create the artworks I could thought was Ai. As it represents the time and also becomes the a door to all the information about the ideal in the form of data. An ideal based on data, can you imagine!

In the Glorious Plus Series, I present plus size aspect of feminity in natural and sometimes sensual representations. Female form indulging in different activities to confront viewers.

StarryAi is the application which facilitated every kind of imagery required for the projects. With the prompts I am creating the initial images then evolving them further to meet the needs of the project.

Revisiting Khoj

Institutions play a major role in an individual's life. They help in developing thinking, providing information to enrich already existing knowledge. These institutions also provide opportunities for like minded individuals to interact with and having conversations with such people, knowledge creation comes to existence.

As it always happens 'New' becomes outdated after sometime and will be replaced by now 'New' thinking. Nevertheless these institutions contributions towards the now 'New' can't be rejected. Now New stands on the ground created by New which is outdated by now New.

Khoj Artists Association (Khoj Studios) one of the institutions which has created many opportunities for artists for gaining knowledge, creating exposure towards new artistic voices to new approaches to art making etc. It's contribution towards Delhi art scene is remarkable.

I have been a regular visitor to the shows and talks organized by Khoj. Some shows were really the trend setting ones. The overall exposure had been exciting and overwhelming as well.

Interestingly while viewing the exhibit viewers follow a certain path which by repeatation becomes automated, a subconscious task, where viewers don't out much effort to guide themselves to move within the exhibiting space.

When I observed this phenomena in my bodily behavior in exhibiting space, I started to notice the architecture around me which existed there all the time. The artworks created the path to move within the architecture without bumping into anything also maintaining a respectful distance from the artworks/walls.

This subconscious acquaintance with architecture inspired me to create a portrait of the architecture of the Khoj. And to draw, I chose the medium of memory drawing.

This was also to understand how I know the architecture by moving within it and by drawing it by memory I wanted to bring it into my conscious memory.

While visiting Khoj, I also collected some catalogues which became the surface I drew upon with pen. This created a complete portrait of Khoj as drawings show the architecture and underlying text and images show what Khoj stands for. The series had around 20 drawings. I discarded some of these and kept 12 drawing as finalized series. The project was executed between 2014-15. After sometime the issue of copyright became a concern, because of that I had to put the project aside as I did with Anatomy of a Dream Project. In 2023, when Ai applications became popular. I used Ai to revive the project. The 12 vth drawing has to be broken into two separate drawings; 12 and 13.

There is one more psychological phenomena associated with the project which is called 'Conditioned Stimulus' a concept from 'Classical Conditioning' by Ivan Pavlov. Visiting artworks was always an exciting feeling at Khoj. Later thinking about it also made me excited which serves as a Conditioned Stimulus in this situation.

Co-existence

Love is essential for human beings. Humans can't live without love. In order to be pro social they must be connected to other Humans at deeper levels. The sense of concern also plays a main role which arises from the relations with others.

Pleasure or more precisely sexual pleasure is an aspect of human life which connects them at intimate level and creates happiness, intimacy, and desire for each other.

Sexual pleasure brings many benefits to human life psychologically and physiologically. By achieving orgasms brain releases hormones which brings happiness, reduce stress, body heals faster, burns calories, keeps human younger. All these benefits are there when things are done mutually, and clearly talked about without the fear of judgment, body shaming, and acts are done with care and tenderness.

Interestingly, different bodies achieve orgasm differently depending upon how their body reacts to different acts. That is why experiancing self and other plays a main role.

All the benefits of achieving an orgasm are also achieved when one makes love to self. In other words an individual's intimate relationship to self is complete in itself and doesn't lack anything. Rather self love gives an individual an understanding of their own needs and their idea of sexual Pleasure.

The Co-existence Series is a photo essay which talks about the self love and experiencing it by creating intimacy with self. Self love or intimacy with self is depicted in the series by creating certain moments between two part of human being; testosterone (yang) and estrogen (ying) by creating a sense of play between the two and their playground happens to be a male body. To achieve the effects which series produces, I used my own body as model, dressed as gentleman. Sametime I shaved my right hand, put the fake nails with pink polish on them to menifest feminity. And put these two elements at play to ignite the moments of play, desire, and pleasure.

The series was created in 2013. It had 10 photographs in the series. After sometime unfortunatey I lost the hard drive which contained the series. Only 4 photographs could service the incident.

One photograph from the series is the part of 'When Art Has a Voice' a curatorial project by Blue2black.nft. The rest three are the part of the collection Co-existence on opensea.io.

In future I intend to recreate the series to add two more concepts to the series apart from already existing concept; loss and aging.

Hiding in the Plain Sights: Hiding in the Plain Sights, is an experimental photographic project. In the project I wanted to create the tension within the environment by changing any one aspect of it. The project took place when I was making a visit to my art college after three years of graduation. The idea was to elicit interest within the frame and create a narrative with a series of artworks within the landscape with laid before my eyes. In this case the medium was photography and landscape was the campus.

I walked into the campus and observed it for a good period of time with the keen eyes of an observer who's looking for his prospective frames . The building was old. Old enough to be considered a ruin but there were still classes happening in the campus so generally everything look quite familiar but different.

Definitely, there was a change in my own understanding and the way I saw it. When I studied there I saw with it with the eyes of a student. Now I saw it with eyes of professional artist, so the level of awareness played a role. Level of sensitivity, history of place and material, my own journey with the campus these things made me see the landscape differently. I also realized the importance of an institution in one’s own life. And how they offer, form the understanding of minds to be professionals in their field. With this tour and analysis came an insight and the result was the essay of photographs.

Since the building was turning into the ruin, bricks could be found around the campus. These bricks were playing new roles from what these had been playing for long; creating a structure for the building too keep it alive. Interestingly bricks became a phenomena which helped me to express the process of ‘transformation’, how ignorance through the experience can become awareness and things can be seen differently with this new awareness.

I painted one the brick golden and placed it at all the possible positions it could exist in the campus. That's how the compositions happened.

Human beings are very interesting beings their level of interest and awareness about any object forms their perceptions about the object itself. Seeing the same object at different intervals with new level of understanding and experiences constantly changes their perceptions about the same object. Same can be applied to the fellow human beings. So going through the time is really a knowledge gaining experience. This process keep the same old object new at different points on the timeline.

KANT: Artist Statement

My art practice can be described as a triangle of psychology, science, and technology. I take two positions in my art practice, i.e., researcher and artist. I turn my concepts into hypotheses to confirm (and reconfirm) to make sense of these, like a social psychologist concluding the findings into literary form. There is always some kind of text as a concluded research that sets the foundation for a series of artworks. To satisfy the needs of my art projects, I jump between mediums and disciplines. I teach myself different knowledge/mediums/disciplines. The choice is dictated by the concept I work on. I personally think I am seduced by the different type knowledge and art becomes a vehicle to dive into these. After the completion of each artwork/ series, I am a more knowledgeful and wiser person than before.

In my art practice I adreess the subjects: psychological phenomena, quantification of humanity, and critique of future.

Projects with psychological aspects explore the worlds of people as individuals & groups and the interactions between them by talking about human feelings. In the projects with scientific theories I explore the possible quantification of humanity. Alternative times & spaces, and distant possibilities in the universe becomes the excuse to offer the critic of future.

I use wide range of mediums in my art-practice to match the need of the concepts, such as; drawing, jpeg, gifs, photography, artificial intelligence, video, generative art etc.

For last few years, my choice of mediums has been turning more and more towards digital. Technology has enabled artists to explore the unknown territories of virtual realms. For some upcoming projects, I will be working with code, augmented reality, virtual reality, mixed reality, simulated walk-throughs, etc. The reach of technology fascinates me. It gives an opportunity to understand the virtual and how it’s affecting our daily lives at different levels.

ICI 0.1: ‘Age of Paranoia and Anxiety’ as a descriptive term for these nascent stages of the 21st century is becoming as familiar to us as the pervading, panopticon of the virtual sphere. Over the past few decades’ humanity as a whole has witnessed social change at an unprecedented level, in correlation with the development of new media communication techniques. Entire communities and marginalized voices are forging legitimized spaces for themselves, and the structures of power are losing their opacity. Yet in this time of seemingly infinite potential for information sharing, connectivity and scope we also see the creation and strengthening of barriers as new concepts of ‘the outsider’ and ‘otherness’ are being identified. With the instantaneous and decentralized spread of information we have also seen the spread of fear, insecurity and an exaggerated sense of paranoia. Utilizing the virtual platform, artist KANT invites the public to view his architectural exploration of these phenomena. Historically the physical structures within which we exist are our second layer of protection from the outside world (clothing being the first) and in this instance architecture is a metaphor for the systems we create to moderate the human experience. BLACK OR WHITE SERIES:

Biography:

KANT is a multidisciplinary artist based in New Delhi. Kant’s art practice can be described as a triangle of Psychology, Science, and Technology. He assigns technology to confirm (and reconfirm) the hypotheses based the on the psychological phenomena he observes. Science in Kant’s practice can be seen as the temperament which at times initiates the process of art-making and at times is the main element of the art project he works on.

In his projects with Psychological aspects he explores the worlds of individuals and the interactions between them by talking about love, desire, hate, fear, nostalgia, phobias etc. In the projects with scientific theories he explores the quantifiable human feelings, alternative times & spaces, and distant possibilities in the universe.

Curatorial Note

‘Black or White’

KANT, presenting his series of twenty GIF illustrations titled ‘Black or White’, instantiates a general pattern of the mundane and numbing routines assumed by the biological and mental faculties of an individual. Situating himself and his own experiences within the capacity of a male consumer, he brings into focus a single day’s activities undertaken by him, moving across his personal life, through his professional, and social activities. He subsequently introduces the figure of a woman in the latter half of the series, making room for an intimate interaction within a personal framework. The shared activities of the two characters, in the process, reveals a parallel between the two gendered identities and experiences.

Yet, with the choice of the title, he intends to mock the nature of identities that exist in binaries by social norm. GIFs, with its short duration animations, allows the viewers to remember through the transformation from the first to the last image, making it a predictable cycle. Likewise, the GIFs used in these illustrations delineates the immediate monotony of the two bodies and their repeated roles played in society. Through the narrative, the black and white line drawings play in a loop, therefore reiterating a sense of the routine, slowly establishing an evolving relationship between the individuals. However, the focus is drawn to radiating bright red spots that the figures exhibit through the series. Situated around the groins of both the gendered bodies, these red patches, unambiguously reference menstrual blood and the biological imperative of reproduction that distinguishes sexuality as determined by biology. Yet with both the individuals undergoing a similar situation, the man is seen empathizing with the woman while experiencing and partaking in an inexplicable physical pain, thus collapsing the concept of binaries as they are traditionally understood.

KANT is trying to explore how similar and different these bodies have become within the social ascriptions generated and cultivated by society. The illustrations challenge accepted binary oppositions by proposing the idea of physical memories that are shared irrespective of the assigned sex of the individuals. Here he begins to question what self-identity is within a social framework that defines gender identity. With a culture domestically dominated by women (identified as the ‘mother’), where children are brought up with a focus on shared responsibilities and division of housework until a certain age, KANT wonders if boys, while growing up, are not left with feminine experiences and biological emotions observed and absorbed from the women in the family.

However, to share the physical pain of the ‘other’, can one simply stop at empathy? Is it possible to share the emotions of another individual at the same degree of intensity? Can one’s own emotions and memories be attached to another’s experiences?
