Banshees (”women of the fairy mound” or “fairy women”) are female spirits in Irish mythology. They predict the death of a family member, usually by wailing, shrieking, or keening. They are described as creatures of ghastly complexion, with long streaming red hair, red eyes from continually weeping and wearing a grey cloak over a green dress. When several Banshees appear at once, it indicates the death of someone great or holy. Although they are called fairies, they are in fact closer to ghosts, more specifically the spirits of murdered women or mothers who died in childbirth. Some accounts even state that each family has it’s own Banshee.
