This was my most challenging project to date and the one I’ve felt the most pressure to get right. It seems as if Manacled is THE fic to bind as a fanbinder and I wanted to make sure that everything was perfect, which it wasn’t, of course, but I’m happy enough with how it turned out!

I had to remake the second volume once I realized 600 pages was too large to fit in the guillotine properly. This was also my first attempt at using only book cloth for the case and, despite the fact that I think I was sent the wrong color, I think it fits the series so I’m happy with it! The dust jackets also needed two prints to get right.

Despite a few hiccups, I’m so glad to have gotten this one completed and I’m excited to move on to the next one!

SHOW, DON’T TELL

For TVWLM book fans who think that the show didn’t include enough of Kate & Anthony’s conversations from the books, I agree because who wouldn’t want more scenes between them, but to then say the show completely lacked a believable, substantive connection between them is hyperbole. A TV show is a different medium than a book and a few great lines or intense looks can replace pages of dialogue, especially in the hands of talented directors and actors.

Jonny and Simone let us feel how Kate and Anthony see and know each other with facial expressions and eyes that speak a thousand words. With an intake of breath, a shared laugh, an intense look across the room, or a tender handhold, they were silently saying: “You are my mirror, my twin flame, my soulmate, the last thing I wanted but what I’ve yearned for my whole life despite my denial.” They learn about each other primarily by observing each other’s actions, not through lengthy discussions.

It’s clear in the bee sting scene and in the closet scene, which include barely a few lines, that they are each other’s eye in the storm. The competitive spirit they both share was blatant in the pall mall and racing scenes. The comfort they find just being in each other’s presence is clear when they ride side-by-side at the hunt and in the quiet moments in the library when they bond over the loss of their fathers, literally while holding Edmund’s book between their hands.

Kate does not need to tell Anthony about how she feels undeserving of her family because he saw it for himself when he stood up to defend her to the Sheffields. She does not need to say exactly how bad things have gone wrong after the failed wedding, because you can see Anthony knows when he catches her eye across the park. Kate does not need to tell Anthony how happy she is when Edwina finally forgives her, because you know he sees it when he smiles seeing them dancing together.

Anthony does not need to say that he respects and trusts Kate because he shows it by telling her about his father’s death, talking about his parents’ betrothal ring, and by being unable to lie about Benedict’s poem in front of her. Their connection as older siblings is clear when he finally does confess his feelings, he did not need to speak to each moment it happens.

And Anthony and Kate dancing! They say so much in those dances, but most especially in their “last” dance, just how in tune and connected they are to each other and their feelings.

TLDR: This season was a good example of why “show, don’t tell,” works best for a TV show, the same way internal and external dialogue works really well in books. Different but not worse.

Your favorite scenes/moments between Kate and Anthony and why these particulary? I loved everything about them I would have liked to see more of them I hope we see them in s3

Okay I’m going to focus on the smaller moments between them. Not the major scenes like dance sequences or almost kisses or actual kisses. But like the small lines or moments within those scenes that just made me go insane. We talk a lot about the bigger things, so I want to focus on some lines/moments we tend to overlook.

1. "Why is it that you dislike me so?!”

The absolute sheer desperation in this line makes me SCREAM. Anthony can pretend all he wants that he only wants Kate's good favor for the sake of courting Edwina, but this one line shatters his entire argument. He doesn't care about his courtship with Edwina. He wants NEEDS to know why Kate dislikes him for himself. This line echoes throughout my entire mind when I watch the rest of this scene.

2. "It was just a bee."

I love the entire bee sting scene but it is this line that I always go back to and remember. The way Kate says it, it’s just so comforting. And then she whispers it again right after. She doesn’t know exactly why Anthony is panicking, just that she needs to comfort him and calm him down. And the way Anthony nods afterward, like he's trying to let her convince him, like he's slowly believing her.

3. "I will stop." "Do not stop." "I will stop." "Do. Not. Stop."

I've talked about this before, but the fact that they got rid of Anthony's "marital rights" line from the books and instead gave us this? Actual and clear consent?? Especially after Anthony was just saying that she has to stop? It's enough to make me forgive anything I didn't like about the season. Anthony physically steps back. He's not just telling her that he will stop. He is SHOWING her. He steps back to give her room, to not distract her with his proximity or what he's doing to her. He leaves it up to Kate. And that's what made the whole encounter THAT much better.

4. "How many?" "Three."

I cannot even begin to describe how giddy this interaction made me. We've seen glimpses of their playfulness together, but only before things started to get really intense between them. Every interaction they have after the bee sting is more argumentative, vulnerable, or sexual tension, which is amazing, I ate it all up. But seeing this playful side to them after everything that happened . . . I literally cannot describe it. I cried when I first saw this interaction, that's how happy it made me.

5. "He does not listen to me." "You believe I do?"

I think playful Kate and Anthony are my absolute favorite. Anthony's little growl as he says his line and Kate's sarcasm in hers, in direct contrast to the last time they said similar lines in the gazebo?? The way he is pulling her in and just smiling at her obstinance?? Literally, how can you not be in love with them??

I have so many more, but I gotta limit myself to 5 or else I would never be able to post this.
