Design Project: Student Care Guide for Rollins College
In my job I design many things for the student affairs division. This was one of the most recent pieces that was completed for the Assistant Vice President for Student Care.
I've worked at Rollins for over nine years. This helps me in creating something that both the client will like, as well as something that aligns with the brand standards for the College. For the inspiration for this project, I searched for a particular pattern that reminded me of the client, her personality, yet was different enough from any other pattern that I'd used. Search terms were something like: blue, braid, vector.
I'm so lucky to have access to photographs provided by the College. This particular project was completed in time for Family Weekend, a big fall event in the beginning of November.
For the design of this project, I changed the layout/document size a few times. Initially this piece started as a tall and thin, spiral bound document. It however didn't end this size, mostly because of the layout of the copy. It is a serious document, so I tried to add in photos to break up some of the subject matter. In the image you can see the background more vividly, and without a transparent blue overlay.
This isn't however, at all, how it ended up. I completed changed the front cover's color scheme, logo, and binding choice for this piece. It took a few days (of doing other design projects) to figure out what I wanted to do for this piece.
If you've never designed a print piece or more importantly a printed booklet before, you must design in sets of 4 pages, more formally known as a "signature." This heavily affected how this piece was designed, the size of each page, and the headings and subheadings for each page.
The Student Care Guide ended as a small, square, 8 page imposition, 2 signature booklet. Here you can see the booklet on the Student Care website as an Issuu booklet. We printed about 1,100 of them and they were distributed to the students, families, and staff at Rollins.
