Design Project: #RollinsFSL Book
Lately my life has been consumed with what I've dubbed "handbook season" at Rollins College. It's the time when a variety of departments on campus come to me with a design request for handbooks for their department, for a certain set of eyes, etc. This #RollinsFSL book is one of my favorites, it's got a REALLY unique size, and it's eye-catching and informative.
INSPIRATION:
As I've done a few handbooks over the past few years, I've seen a trend in terms of what each handbook should be communicating. This book the department requested to be a little bit more unique, so I really had fun with it. I added lots of bright colors, and I made it different compared to the year before when their information was combined with another department. I didn't really look for inspiration for this project. It was more about winging it as I went along, and hoping that they liked it. AND THEY DID!
DESIGN/FINAL PROJECT:
We had 1,000 books printed. They're being given out during student leader training, and through orientation. The book is 9-inches wide, by 4-inches tall. It has 32 pages, full color, full bleed, and lots of smiling faces.
Design Project: Rollins R-Card
Every five to seven years, Rollins will redesign their R-Card (ID card). This year I was asked to design it, and I'm so incredibly thrilled to share it!
The Rollins R-Card is used for everything, to check out library books, to get in and out of the parking garage, as key access in and out of certain locations, and more. It's something that every student and every employee must have while being a part of Rollins College!
INSPIRATION:
Right now, Rollins College has a specific design style to things. Everything is pretty clean, bright, and communicating a specific message. I go through spurts of using certain images for projects. The photo on this one, has been growing in my So after a few iterations of the design, and after showing it to a variety of people, we got something down, and they're being printed/distributed as we speak!
DESIGN/FINAL PRODUCT:
As I mentioned before, there were several versions of the R-Card before we settled on this one. It had to include a lot of different scenarios with different information being displayed per cardholder. It's so awesome to be a part of such a visible project.
Design Project: Class of 1965 Commemorative Yearbook
Every year at Rollins, the Office of Alumni Relations throws a fantastic Alumni Weekend. It's filled with a weekend full of events, music, and celebrations for not only returning alumni, but also for sports, fraternities and sororities, and other student organizations.
One of the biggest headaches on the printing end of the weekend is the annual 50th anniversary commemorative book. It includes 50th alumni photos, their contact information, personalized stories, the alma mater, and much, much more.
In years past, the department has designed this project, while using outdated software, an inconsistent design technique, all while the file wasn't set up for printing! So this year (in February), they asked me to design the book for them.
AND IT WAS A HIT! The Class of 1965 Commemorative Book included a photo/data merge (lifesaver!), and consistent design elements, techniques, etc., for this book to be sustainable (and an easy project in the future), all while being able to be edited at a moments notice.
INSPIRATION:
There wasn't a ton of thought as far as inspiration goes with this book. It was more about making sure that the faces matched the contact information, that the book was edited by the department and by myself, as well as include information that applied to the class of 1965.
DESIGN/FINAL PRODUCT:
One of the things that I am most proud of in this book is the data/photo merge that I learned for this project. Thanks Adobe! As well as learning of the script that places PDF pages where you want (hello 40 page import!). This wasn't the only piece that was created for Alumni Weekend, so there had to be a consistency between myself, and between the other designers.
It definitely fit in, and was a successful project!
Jen Made: Monthly Planners & To Do List
It's been a while, life's been incredibly hectic between work and school, so my site has gotten a little bit of neglect.
But this is what you've missed:
I can't ride a bike. Falling hurts, and so do bumps and bruises.
A to do list makes my productivity SO much better.
Anyway, I was looking online at all of those weekly/monthly/make your life better planners. The Day Designer, the Life Planner, something else, and something else. Now mind you, it's the middle of March, and I'm trying to make my life more productive. Everything has either started 2 months ago, or won't begin until June/July/August time.
SO WHY NOT MAKE MY OWN? I did just that. I don't need all of the extras, I don't very often need a to do list for a month out, so why not make a daily write space/to do list for myself?
I've got March 2015, and April 2015 printed, so far it's made my life a heck of a lot easier. I'm thinking about selling them on Etsy or something, we'll see. It's making my life a heck of a lot easier, so why not try to make someone else's, too?
Design Project: UMAMI Magazine with Brussels Sprouts + Kimchi
Hi. It's been a while since I've shared with you any design work and for that matter any food that I've been making. But I have a good reason, I promise. I've moved homes! I have a kitchen again! And I've been busy! So here goes, this is a two-in-one for ya, so enjoy.
If you don't know me, or know my site at all, or my company name, or... or... or... whatever, I'm really in love with Korean food, and more specifically obsessed with KIMCHI!
So for my publication design project, naturally, I mixed in a little bit of Asian with it :) Over the semester for this class, we are working on a magazine slowly, page by page, week by week. So this in NO WAY is the final product! During my research I found an absolutely delicious recipe for Brussels Sprouts + Kimchi, and might I tell you how incredibly delicious it was? I'm going to make it next week, too!
Jen Made: BENTO Box Lunches
I'm in the process of moving homes. I've been packing slowly for a few weeks and unfortunately one of the first areas that I started packing was my kitchen. Since I boxed up many of my pots and pans, I've had to find alternatives for my lunches that don't involve any cooking!
I had some Glad containers that I figured I would start using as this adventure progressed. They're really large containers, but they lacked any ways to keep things separated. And I don't know about you, but carrots and pretzels touching each other is not good.
After a few days of this, I ordered a monbento box that I hoped would solve all of my problems... and I think it did! I've packed my lunch/dinner in it all week!
Today's lunch was filled with magic.
Two whole-wheat mini bagel sandwiches (ingredients are: jalapeño cheese, cabbage kimchi, and sriracha/mayo sauce)
Goldfish (my snack weakness)
Pretzels
Carrots & hummus
Occasionally I'll throw in a fruit (grapes/strawberries, etc.) but I ran out of time when I was packing!
I highly recommend these containers... and I'm slowly becoming a bento master :)
Oh, and happy Friday!
JENCHIKIMCHI Original: Business Cards
So I'm super duper thrilled... THRILLED to share with you my new business cards that I finished up today. I've been working really hard on pulling all of the pieces together and getting this knocked out, so I'm thrilled that the project is all done!
This is what was involved: A couple weeks ago I bought a rubber stamp from RubberStamps.net with the intention of being able to stamp it on business cards, mailable cards, thank you cards, etc. Today I finished the design of my business cards and got them printed a few hours later! They were printed digitally on 18 x 12 inch, 100# Accent Cover (thanks International Papers!). Cut the bleed off to the standard US business card size (3.5 x 2 inches).
If I do say so myself, it's quite a masterpiece!
