The 2017-2019 Soho Rep Wrtier/Director Lab is complete! With showings of plural (love) on January 19th and 20th at WalkerSpace!
More on plural (love)...
With the performance installation plural (love), Jen Goma, Morgan Green, & Haruna Lee flirt with the boundaries of desire, power, and responsibility, building an environment that feels akin to stepping into a soft BDSM roleplay. Always written and performed anew based on its audience and physical surroundings (from the NY Hall of Science planetarium, to theatre festivals, to a hotel), plural (love) is an opportunity for Goma, Green & Lee to report their latest findings on love, desire, intimacy, sex and sexuality, and its relationship to transparency, ethics, and equity.
Originally inspired by auto-theorists such as Audre Lorde, Assata Shakur, Claudia Rankine, Maggie Nelson, and Roland Barthes, Goma, Green & Lee layer political, cultural, and social theory with their own autobiographical stories, especially focusing on the conundrum that Goma and Lee have faced in their experience of desire and being desired as Asian American women. The body of this series is largely written and performed by Lee and Goma while Green directs, and they perform their musings through a pastiche of intricate styles that include pop songs with lyrics by Sartre, ritual, live podcasts, intimate humor, and radical truth-telling.

Showtime Goma Asks Brooklyn Vegan’s Bill Pearis the One True Question, Ramsay or Fieri?
Smiley Face is now streaming over at Brooklyn Vegan! The stream is accompanied by an interview with Showtime Goma conducted by Bill Pearis.
Showtime is conductor now. I grill Bill on food, music and celebrity chefs.
SG : Ever since I moved to NY, BV has been a essential read in my community. What other sites could you turn readers onto? where do you get your music news/news? Or if BV, is the headliner what sites would you want to open for you? BP: I don't get to read as many music blogs as I used to, unfortunately. The only music blog I really read religiously is my friend Toby's, called The Finest Kiss. He definitely turns me onto things I didn't know about, and we have very similar taste. As I get older I look for individuals I trust, more than whole websites. That said, I check in with Pitchfork, Sterogum, and The Quietus most days. Also Vulture and AV Club, but that's more for TV and film stuff. I watch a lot of TV.
SG : Bill, you have a radio show, tell us about that! How can we listen? What are some other radio shows you can recommend? Also can one become a guest on your show? Like, if one just shows up do you think one would be able to get on air?
BP : You can hear me most Saturday afternoons from 2-4PM Eastern on LittleWaterRadio.org. The station broadcasts live from South Street Seaport and I've been doing it for about two years. I was Music Director at my college radio station and there's some definite nostalgia in that way, but I still play 70% new music on my show. As for other radio shows...I miss having a car just for listening to music, both on the radio and new albums (or mixes). Though I listen to tons of music, I miss the full attention you can give to things in a car.
SG : I've always appreciated the emphasis on photos in BV's show coverage. Is there a slept on article or just an article with particularly great photos we should check out?
BP : Ebru Yildiz, who has contributed photos to BV for years and is amazing, put out a book documenting the last few months of Williamsburg DIY venue Death by Audio. She put together a gallery just for us with outtakes from the book and that is amazing. As far as articles go, I really liked the interview I did with music supervisor Maggie Phillips who worked on Oscar-winner Moonlight, as well as Fargo and other shows.
SG : Bill, it seems that you are a lover of music as well as food. As a person who has before described food as "a friend," where would you recommend I go eat in NY? BP : Oh boy, well that's a pretty broad question, but let's see. I like to cook so I don't go out as often as I used to. In my neighborhood of Williamsburg I like Snacky (dumplings and more), St. Anselm (they grill everything), Zizi Limona (great Mediterranean), The Commodore (burgers, nachos), and the Tacos Morellos truck by the Bedford stop. I do indulge in pizza delivery from Motorino (their brussels sprouts pie is amazing). I like Chinese food a lot and try to convince my friend Sandy, who owns Snacky, to take us to Queens for Uncle Zhou or Spicy & Tasty. The only thing I am willing to drop any real dough on is sushi, and Sushi Yasuda is where I go for my birthday every year. There's a Shake Shake near Little Water Radio, and I do eat there very often. I'm definitely the least vegan person at BV, though most of what I cook at home is vegetarian. I cook with beans a lot, and am a huge fan of Rancho Gordo's heirloom varieties. I also make great cauliflower tacos.
SG : Ramsay or Fieri?
BP : It's not even a contest. Gordon Ramsay, who I do a pretty good impression of, but not as good as James Atamaniuk's. Gordon gets a bad rep for being a hothead and calling people "donkey" but the guy can cook, and can be a cool guy. If you watch the UK versions of Kitchen Nightmares or The F Word (which uses a Babybird song I love as its theme), you see a softer side of Gordo. As for Guy Fieri, I have no desire to eat at any of his places but I did enjoy the NY Times review of his NYC restaurant.
Jen "Showtime" Goma and Nancy Feast, aka Teeny Lieberson of TEEN, mall hop and get ear piercings in our exclusive premiere of the "Propel" video, from Goma's forthcoming album Smiley Face.
This was the first time ever, that I ever got my ears pierced. They still hurt.
