sorry im still not over @plantsandothers pointing out the part of the shooting script where jud tells wicks priests can masturbate bc it's important to find healthy outlets for pent up desires bc between the growing stack of evidence that jud does not seem to have half the sexual hangups you'd think he'd have and the fact that irl gay priests are doing gay shit all the time bc technically celibacy is mostly meant to prevent having offspring to the point where straight priests feel like this is a double standard and grow resentful there is genuinely nothing about catholicism itself that's potentially stopping jud from pouncing on that old man

it's truly more about blanc's own religious trauma/self-preservation instincts (that he sets aside when someone/something compels him enough) and of course the fact that if jud catches himself having too nice a time for too long he's like "oh shit forgot my soul is tainted bc im a murderer brb" [self-sabotages for a while until things are comfortably shitty again] "ok im good now. who want me."

and you know blanc loves to have a frustrating little project (the blanc+watson element) especially if the potential of forbidden desire and gay sex hangs in the air (the daniel craig element) ... im literally having one of my Episodes rn you know when judblanc is so plausible that you start getting scared

i think that jud can rationalize engaging in all sorts of sexy blasphemy with his guardian angel of a detective with relative ease and could even convince himself to join him on cases sometimes because he really grows to appreciate the way blanc helps people but if he "slips up" and consciously imagines them being boyfriends living together in a normal apartment even for a second he flips the fuck out 🙂‍↕️

a take on jud i haven't seen nearly enough is that his repression and self-denial isn't really catholic guilt in the sense we're used to so much as it is recovered addict logic being overapplied. he fundamentally distrusts things that bring him joy and relief because historically those things have been Bad. he isn't conflicted because he's afraid of sinning in some general sense. he believes the collar is the thin line between the person he'd like to be and chaos.

I watched Wake Up Dead Man again on the plane last week, and a new headcanon I have is that Benoit Blanc hears the phrase "married to Christ" in reference to both Catholic priests generally and Father Jud specifically, and due to both his incredibly obvious religious trauma and his competitive nature, he is instantly seized with the need to Do It Better™️.
