2015 Ace Community Census

The 2015 Ace Community Census is an annual community survey conducted by the AVEN Survey Team. The purpose of this survey is to measure various demographics of the asexual community in order to create an annually updated database of qualitative information which can be used for future asexual research.

“The 2015 AVEN Survey is run by the Asexual Visibility and Education Network (AVEN). However the survey is open anyone over the age of 13, both aces and non-aces.”

Just like monogamous people, polyamorous people have varying levels of interest in sex. Some are on the asexual spectrum. Some have illnesses or disabilities that impact their desire or ability to have sex (or their partners do). Some choose to implement rules that limit what they can do sexually with some of their partners. Some are single. The fact that someone is polyamorous says nothing about how much or what types of sex they have. The idea that polyamory is all about sex sex sex is often used to discredit it as a valid relationship style or portray polyamorous people as “slutty” or noncommittal. There’s nothing wrong with having lots and lots of consensual sex with lots and lots of people, but it’s not the whole story about polyamory.

reminder to people in polyamorous relationships who get jealous:

its okay to be jealous

jealousy doesn’t make you an asshole

as long as you deal with it in a healthy way, jealousy isn’t a problem

being jealous doesn’t mean you’re selfish

being jealous doesn’t mean you’re a hypocrite

being jealous doesn’t mean you’re faking being polyamorous

being jealous (occasionally) won’t ruin your relationship(s)

I also checking to make sure it’s actually jealousy and not envy. Everytime I’ve had a twinge I thought was jealousy, it was actually me just wanting to do the same sort of thing instead with them/him but not upset they were doing it together. I find having the distinction helps define what I’m really feeling instead of lumping everything together.

Both of these so much. I am trying to be more careful in the words I use because often I am experiencing envy not jealousy. I want to do the fun thing or have the cake but I have no negative emotion about whoever it is who is doing the fun thing or eating the cake!
