"But if we actually have somewhere we want to be if we actually have a destination in mind, we always have a map. Why? Because a map can get us there faster and more efficiently."

CARP
“Applying CARP can help you put together an interface so that it is reasonably attractive.”
Example of how CARP is applied in Google Maps:
Contrast - The contrast between primary action vs. secondary action.
Alignment - All buttons are right aligned within map.
Repetition - The style applied to categories is repeated throughout. (Red background, white icon, grey label)
Proximity - The different modes of transportation to get to destination and the time it takes to commute by that mode is listed immediately under destination.
The main purpose of prototyping a user interface is to test out design hypotheses with users.

All too often we tend to latch on to a particular solution and begin the process of incrementally improving it before we've explored the possibility space. But if you freeze and idea too quickly, you fall in love with it. If you refine it too quickly, you become attached to it and it becomes hard to keep exploring, to keep looking for better.

Progressive Disclosure - Three Examples
“An interaction design technique that helps maintain the focus of a user’s attention by reducing clutter, confusion, and cognitive workload. This improves usability by presenting the minimum info required for the task at hand.”
1. Lyft - Ride Request Page
2. Gmail - Searching for mail
3. Netflix - Home page
Google has the functionality of a complicated Swiss Army knife, but the home page is our way of approaching it closed. It's simple, it's elegant, you can slip it in your pocket, but it's got the great doodad when you need it. A lot of our competitors are like a Swiss Army knife open -- and that can be intimidating and occasionally harmful.

LATCH - The 5 Ways to Organize Information
“Information may be infinite, however... The organization of information is finite as it can only be organized by LATCH: Location, Alphabet, Time, Category, or Hierarchy” - Richard Saul Wurman
Location - Furniture organized by it’s location in the home
Alphabet - Artist organized alphabetically on Spotify
Time - Search suggestion organized by time (most recent)
Category - Product organized by it’s step in skincare routine
Hierarchy - Webtoons organized by popularity
The way information is presented and organized is as important as the content.
Richard Saul Wurman
Usability is measured by the extent to which a product can be used by specified users to achieve goals with effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction in a specified context of use.
ISO-9241 Definition of Usability
The way information is presented and organized is as important as the content.

We should treat all failures in the same way: find the fundamental causes and redesign the system so that these can no longer lead to problems.
