Looking back at my internship in Aruba

Hello guys!

I have been back in Belgium for more than a week now. After four weeks without school it's a strange feeling to be back at school. I miss it very much; getting up when the sun shines, my colleagues, the good food. Actually, I could get used to life in Aruba. It was an incredibly fun adventure that I will never forget. I learned a lot at work and met great people. I think it's really cool that I can tell everyone that I've been to Aruba.

Who can say that he/she has been in Aruba? ME!!!

Last day!

Today was unfortunately the last day of a three-week internship. I learned a lot here and really enjoyed it.

First I would like to thank my supervisor, Charlene. She has guided me well during these three weeks. I also want to thank Jillian and the other colleagues for spending so much time in me and helping me when something didn't work.

Secondly, I would like to thank Mrs Noyens and Mr Pareijn for always taking us everywhere and coming to pick us up with the Balashi bus. I also want to thank you for the good care and the nice company.

Finally I would like to thank the school for giving me this unique opportunity. I’m very happy to have experienced this!😀

It was an unforgettable adventure with amazing people. I wil never forget this!

A new hobby!

Hello everyone

What you don't know yet is that the whole Aruba team has a new hobby, namely salsa dancing. Every Wednesday evening there is a salsa evening in Bugaloe, a bar above the sea. We learn better and better dancing every week so when we arrive in Belgium we are real pros! Besides the nice salsa lessons, the bar also has good food and delicious cocktails. It is THE bar of our internship because we had great times! Yesterday we unfortunately had our last lesson, but in Belgium we can of course continue to do so.

Carnival on Aruba!

This year Carnival celebrates its 65th anniversary here so it is celebrated extra hard. Next week's big parade on Saturday evening is unfortunately not possible, but this weekend we already enjoyed the other parades.

Friday morning at 3 o'clock we got up to go to The Jouvert Morning Pyjama Party. At this party thousands of people come together in San Nicolas to follow all different cars with live music. Everyone dances until 8 o'clock in the morning.

Saturday evening we went to The Lightning Parade. The Aruba Lighting Parade is one of Aruba's favorite carnival parades, held in downtown Oranjestad. Everyone wears beautiful luminous costumes. Also the cars are nicely decorated and there is live music.

I’m very happy to have experienced this!

Met de collega’s!

Bon dia!

Ik zit ondertussen al in de helft van mijn stage. Ik heb al veel bijgeleerd en mij goed geamuseerd. Ik werk natuurlijk niet alleen op de afdeling, educational affaires, dus jullie zijn zeker en vast benieuwd wie mijn collega’s zijn. Op de foto zie je drie van de vijf collega’s. De vrouw rechts naast mij is mijn stagementor, Charlene. Het zijn heel lieve en leuke vrouwen en er is altijd een goede sfeer op onze bureau.

Ik kijk nog heel hard uit naar de komende dagen en ik hou jullie zeker op de hoogte.

About the weekend

This weekend we did some amazing things. Friday evening we went to a party at the University, there was an orchestra playing. Saturday morning we climbed the Hooiberg. At the top of this mountain you can see Venezuela if it’s not too cloudy. Unfortunately we did not see it. After this we went to a beach with the bluest water of Aruba. It was very beautiful. We swam a lot and layed on the beach. In the evening we went out to eat in a cozy bar. I ate a cheese burger and it was very tasty.

Sunday we went off road with a 4x4 pickup in Arikok National Park. It was very spectacular. I certainly wanted to visit this park so I am very glad we did. It was definitely worth it. After this we ate a pizza in a local bar. 

The weekend was very nice and I am looking forward to the second week of work.

Mijn eerste werkdagen

De eerste 2 echte werkdagen zijn al achter de rug, wat gaat de tijd toch snel!

Maandag hebben we enkel kennisgemaakt met iedereen dus dit was geen echte werkdag.

Gisteren heb ik eerst kennisgemaakt met mijn collega’s en daarna heb ik samen met Ferre en Jarne een rondleiding gekregen op de universiteit. De andere leerlingen zitten in een ander gebouw dus daarom kregen zij geen rondleiding. Na de middag heb ik al veel mogen doen; een overzicht maken in Excel van alle administratiekosten, briefjes sorteren en ik mocht ook al beginnen improviseren over een landingspagina van onze afdeling op hun website.

Vandaag heb ik een heel plan uitgewerkt over de landingspagina en daarna ben ik begonnen met een lijstje te maken van de veelgestelde vragen door leerlingen.

Ik kijk nog heel hard uit naar de komende weken en ik hoop dat ik nog veel ga bijleren.

We arrived!

Yesterday we arrived in Aruba, glad we were finally back on the solid ground after 10 hours of flying. The first thing we did when we arrived at the resort was splashing in the pool. The resort is very beautiful and tropical.

Today we went shopping in a big supermarket to buy all the necessary things. We also went to Oranjestad, the California Lighthouse and in the evening we looked at the beautiful sunset.

Tomorrow we have our first day of work and I’m really looking forward to it.

Het verblijf

Nog een paar dagen en het is eindelijk zover, dan vertrekken we naar het warme Aruba. Ik kan bijna niet wachten om op het vliegtuig te stappen, ook al heb ik wel een beetje gezonde zenuwen. We verblijven in een appartement in Blue Village. Aruba Blue Village is een tropisch resort, gelegen aan de noordkant van het prachtige eiland Aruba. Het heeft maar liefst 120 diverse accommodaties tot haar beschikking. Ik kijk er al naar uit om hier 3 weken te verblijven.

Er komen de volgende weken nog veel blogposts aan dus kom zeker nog eens een kijkje nemen.

University of Aruba

Hello everyone

My internship will be at the University of Aruba. The University is located in the capital of Aruba, Oranjestad. I will be working at the department educational affairs. I’m really looking forward to work here.

Arikok National Park

This beautiful National Park in Aruba comprises almost 20% of the island. You can enjoy gorgeous vistas of Aruba’s rugged terrain, desert-like hills filled with tall cacti, a breathtaking coastline and protected local flora and fauna. The revenues of the admission fees go to the maintenance of the park and the animals, which move freely over the more than 3000 hectares.

What to do at National Park? Visit caves, view original Indian petroglyphs, explore the park with a jeep, make nature walks through dry riverbeds to secluded coves such as Moro, Boca Prins and Dos Playa. There is also a monthly  "Movie in the Park“ evening where you can see a movie in the open air. 

A unique, unforgettable experience in unspoiled nature!

Bon bini!

Ik ben de afgelopen dagen bezig geweest met het zoeken naar dingen die ik graag wil zien of doen in Aruba. Ik heb veel leuke dingen gevonden, maar voor jullie maak ik hier een top 3.

Als eerste de hoofdstad, Oranjestad. In deze stad vind je gekleurde huisjes met spaanse en caribische twisten. Ik denk dat het heel mooi en uniek is om te zien!

Als tweede de mooie stranden van Aruba. Vooral Palm Beach lijkt mij zeker de moeite waard. Dit is HET strand van Aruba. Het lijkt wel dat het uit een film komt met het witte zandstrand, de vele palmbomen en het turquoise zeewater. Er bestaan ook stranden op het renaissance eiland met flamingo’s en dat zou ook zeer uniek zijn om eens naartoe te gaan, maar deze kan je enkel bezoeken als je verblijft in één van de twee hotels waarvan dit eiland eigendom is.

Op de derde plaats staat de zonsondergang in California Point. Dit  is ook DE toplocatie op het ABC-eiland om een zonsondergang mee te maken. Aruba is het land dat één van de mooiste zonsondergangen heeft ter wereld dus dit wil ik zeker en vast niet missen!   

Ik heb nog veel andere leuke dingen gevonden, maar we hebben maar twee weekenden om dit allemaal te ontdekken. Er zullen dus keuzes moeten gemaakt worden van wat we het liefst willen doen en hopelijk maken we de juiste!

My expectations

I expect that I am going to learn a lot in these 3 weeks and  that I will improve  on a social level. I hope that I will see many beautiful things and that I can discover the beautiful island of aruba.

Hi guys, within a month I leave with 6 other students to Aruba. I am very curious about the course of this internship and I am looking forward to work at the university of Aruba.
