going through the botw voice memos has me thinking about narrative mirror zelink, in the way that Zelda's the one that's failing and Link's the one that's fulfilling his destiny, Zelda is seen as a disappointment (allegedly, all the characters we meet are very sympathetic to her, maybe Rhoam made it up to be An Asshole), and Link is loved by the people, but also, Zelda has a closer support network. She has Urbosa and Impa and Revali etc,

but Link isn't mentioned to have anyone at all. No one notices that he's having a hard time other than Mipha who knew him before he got the sword. But even she doesn't know how to help him and they don't get much of a chance to try. Sure, he's friendly with Daruk too but he doesn't speak to him, he doesn't speak to literally anyone until Zelda is able to sneak through his walls. Even Urbosa who seems to realize what's going on with him simply cares more about Zelda's wellbeing than his. She wants them to get along for Zelda's sake, not his.

Zelda and Revali, who are both jealous of him in their own ways, interpret his silence as stupidity or some other kind of simple-mindedness. Obviously, he's not reacting to any theatrics or goading because he thinks they're better than them or has nothing going on upstairs, when in reality, he's been borderline dissociating for years at a time. His masking is a little too good, no one knows what's going on inside him, which means no one knows that something is wrong, because clearly something is wrong.
