Hibiki’s heart fluttered wildly as he silently watched over Muffy’s babies. She had given birth to four healthy bunnies two weeks ago. Her litter was relatively small, but seeing as she was tiny herself Hibiki hadn’t expected her to have more than four babies. 

Today was a special and exciting day for the kits, because there was a very high possibility today they would open their eyes for the very first time. Hence why was the reason Hibiki was sitting on the floor and watching over them so intently. He wanted to be there to see them opening their eyes for the first time.

“What are you guys up to today?” Hibiki asked the kits, letting them smell his fingers and rub their heads against him. He had yet to name any of them. Naming them without knowing what their personality is like wouldn’t do. Hibiki wanted to have the perfect names for them.

Hibiki didn’t notice Kaito’s presence until he was right behind him. 

“Ah! Kaito… You’re here. Did you want to see the bunnies also? You can if you would like. I think they are going to open their eyes today for the first time.”

“Oh, they were born?” 

After an extensive trip back to Ekoda, he hadn’t heard the news up until now. Kaito hadn’t even said goodbye to Hibiki before he’d headed off, really, but well...

Suppose that the weird cop VS phantom thief fiasco they had actually counted as a farewell.

That said, he wasn’t really that interested in why Hibiki was rocking back and forth in front of something like an excited school girl. Kaito only wanted milk, but if that was the case, he rather liked rabbits too. He shifted his hands into his pockets and moved around to the other side, crouching down and-- ah, wow, he hadn’t seen baby rabbits in a while now. They were cuter than he remembered, but then again, he was a kid who had too little of an attention span back then.

“Have you named any yet?” He hummed. “Or are you waiting for the dad’s opinion?”

“Fondue, do you get the feeling we’re being watched?” said pooch looked up before turning his head around the area, trying to spot whoever it could be, however his initial search brought up nothing and he simply laid down, resting his muzzle on Raphael’s feet.

And well, he just didn’t get to the jewels yet, but he’s pretty sure one of the escape routes is there. “Lets be careful, oui?” No one else was in the building with them. Not that he could see. the air was full of somber colours, that of silence, and the red of his own foot steps echoing behind him.”Lets cheese it, Fondue” the pup was back to his feet, wagging his tail as they continued their tour of the museum.

His dove fluffed its fathers again, except this time, Kaito didn’t mistake the sentiment. It was flapping its wings towards the museum, a mischievous little glint in its beady eye, and he knew that what meant.

“Haa...? I don’t get why we would...” He scratched at his cheek, peering up at the building again and swinging his binoculars by the handle. “I guess we could go introduce ourselves, but it sounds like too much trouble.” Kaito had to hand it to his doves, they were persuasive and probably only because their silence allowed him to sort of ponder among his own thoughts. No use in letting another thief terrorize his detectives, right?

... Right. Somehow, within the next few minutes, Kaito found himself clad in KID regalia and standing on top of the museum, poking around the roof before peering into the door. “What do you say we play with the lighting, Angel-chan?”

“Prrr!”

“Heeeh.. so there’s the cheeky finch.” Not that he had any intention of messing with him just yet. So far, the kid hadn’t taken a step near the jewel exhibit, apparently wandering around the paintings from what he could see through the windows.

“Maa, whatever, as long as he’s not after the big guys, he’s not my problem, huh?” Kaito mused aloud to the dove that had brought his attention to the matter, now perched on his shoulder. “Keep an eye on him, though, okay? If he’s anything like a kaitou, he’ll announce before he steals.”

The bird fluffed its feathers, seemingly readying itself for a spy mission.

“H-Hey! What are you doing…?!” 

Hibiki couldn’t do much but watch in horror as the man on the roof moved more and more over the edge. Just by watching, he felt his heart pounding fiercely in his chest and adrenaline rushing through his body. He had to move and… and do something, but in his current position he was powerless. Were the man to fell, there was nothing he could do. 

Almost as if surrendering, Hibiki put his hands up and backed off a little. “Please, step back. I won’t arrest you and you won’t get in trouble. I just want you to get down from there, safely.”

Something was nagging Hibiki. Could it be that he was being played with? That seemed very likely, but Hibiki wasn’t one to make assumptions. For all he knew the man in white could be thinking of suicide. Either way, the current situation was very stressful for him. He wanted to call for backup, but with the other being as unpredictable as he was Hibiki didn’t want to take the risk of him trying something funny because he was going to call backup. 

“Step. Back.”

He had to hand it to Hibiki. Freaking out while KID was practically dancing on top of the building was either an accomplishment, or a very pessimistic view of dancing. Still, as much as he could conform to whatever his room mate’s worries were, he really had to get going. Additionally, he didn’t have his extra disguise on him right now, so there wasn’t the option of slipping back into the building and changing, so hang gliding it was.

Instead, he took a step back and retrieved a card from inside his pocket, poofing a pen into existence before scribbling something on it. Then, he loaded it into his card gun and teetered back over the edge, aiming casually before he fired it down onto the ground. Said ammo shot down until it slowed into a graceful flutter, landing neatly beside his desired target.

Not to worry, Keibu-chan. Thank you for your concern! 

Which was all the phantom thief allowed before he snapped his belt on, the hang glider propping out from under his cape as the wiring spread. Then, in one swift movement, KID dropped in a swoop until the air caught at his wings, smoothly sailing him through the air until he disappeared among other buildings.

Hibiki crossed his arms as he waited for a reply. At the very least the oddly dressed man (why that outfit?) hadn’t started running after being spotted by him. If he were to slip and fall to his death, Hibiki wasn’t sure how he would go about explain that to the bureau. 

That being said, Hibiki had no experience whatsoever when it came to stopping people from buildering. His first and foremost concern was getting the man down without him getting injured. Hibiki thought he had done well giving him a warning, but that absolutely hadn’t faced the man seeing as he wasn’t moving. What would the next step be? Calling for backup? Climbing after him? 

“Unless you’ve got permission from the owner of this building to climb this building, you are to come down from there immediately! And even if you have permission, come down here and show me your papers!” 

Hibiki didn’t like all this yelling, but he wasn’t sure how the other was going to hear him otherwise. As he stood there, he tried his best to recall if he ever had found himself in a similar situation in training. The answer was a very disappointing ‘no’. 

Rubbing his neck, he looked up to the unmoving man and sighed. “I’m only doing this for your own safety. This is my final warning!”

KID liked to think of himself as a very nice person, or at least chivalrous, even though he knew that was a pack of lies, but the guise was a pretty nice one he liked to support. Nice people, he thought, didn’t tease their little baby police officers when they clearly had no experience in kaitou catching, but he had pointed out what a phantom thief was a while ago to Hibiki. It was probably about time he got around to meeting one.

Still, he couldn’t really stop himself from stifling a laugh and tucking his binoculars back into his suit, then shifting his hand inside his pocket. For whatever reason, hearing that being up so high was a danger and that he was only being warned for his own safety was hilarious. Why? Because he was extremely tempted into playing with it.

And so, KID stretched a foot out over the edge of the building, wagging it around. He teetered forward, then back, as if he was going to fall, but his excellent balance demonstrated great control. Then, he switched said feet and moved until his heels were the only thing keeping him attached to the building side, swinging back and forth. Oh. Whatever shall he do. He may fall.

Ever since Hibiki had been promoted to officer, strange things had happened to him while on the job. There and been that one night shift in which a drunk middle aged woman had walked up to him, called him hot and passed out on him. And what about that other time when some random punk had shouted “Fuck the police!” at him before running into a streetlight. Those had been very strange experiences indeed, but what Hibiki didn’t know was that today he would experience something even stranger, namely… a man on a roof.

By coincidence, Hibiki had stretched his arms and looked up at the exact right moment to spot someone standing on top of a building. At first he thought his eyes were playing tricks on him, but no, there definitely was a person up there. Currenlty being on duty, Hibiki couldn’t ignore something like this.

“Hey! You up there!” Hibiki called out, trying to get the attention of the person on top of the building. “Come down from there immediately! Buildering is illegal and dangerous! If you come down this instant you’ll get away with a warning!”

Wait... was that--

Oh, you’ve got to be kidding him. Yeah, sure, he knew that Hibiki had patrols around this time of day, or er, night, but not quite the point at hand. This was Hibiki, and Mamoru may have met both sides of him, but having the two of them clued in on KID and Kaito while living with them wasn’t really an ideal situation.

So he just ignored him and took out a set of binoculars, peering around the city for the best landing point from this angle. Police Officer Jr down there needed at least a few minutes to get up here, so he could rest at ease as it was.

KID wasn’t usually the type to be concerned with the height of buildings, but Toshi’s branching points were seriously low. Never had he thought he would grant solicitously to such a normal matter, but here he was, perched on one of the buildings and deciding it wasn’t nearly high enough to get him to the boundary again.

Great, he was going to have to undress and go hike up another, bigger one. Oh Ekoda, Tokyo, how he missed your advantages.

“I am going to if you steal my milk for it.” Twitch. “Ever considered asking?”

“No one was at the door!” He said simply before he shut the door of the balcony and hopped onto the railing.

“It’s four PM. Really?”

“Hey, I don’t question your constant coffee consummate. Don’t question when I eat cereal.”

“I could ask you why you didn’t use the front door but… why are you even here and raiding my fridge?”

He takes the milk from his mouth and walks back to the balcony.

“I need milk for my Frosties. See ya, Kudo!”

“Kuroba…?”

“Wuht.”

“We ran out of milk...”

Time to climb down the balcony into Clover 2 and nick theirs for a while.

“The Disappearance of Kudou Shinichi: The Worst Two Months in History.” Totally didn’t rip that off from some Detective Arthur special or anything. Especially one that aired last December.

He laughed it off and then smiled at Kaito, intent to listen to his words.

That smile wore off quickly, actually.

“Oh, come on Kuroba. You should know that two months of anime isn’t much. That’s like eight episodes of every anime I kept track o–” Ballocks. That kinda was a lot now that he thought of it. “The only anime that matters is Detective Arthur anyway.” He corrected himself. “Also Dragon & Rabbit, but that hasn’t had any new releases in a long while.”

“So all that happened in my absence was Art returning, Shirogane and Kuze doing the relationship dance, –” Funny, he thought Kuze was gay. You learn something new every day. “– Bunny porn, anime and a sweet coffee deal?”

“You sure recapped that well. Why didn’t I ask you first?” Maybe because he was too busy thinking about the C-ta ass he had missed in his absence.

“Now we got that over with, wanna get some coffee? I’m starving.”

“That’s been on hiatus manga-wise.” Kaito shrugged, which didn’t really matter because his favourite manga had been on hiatus for much longer, and whatever.

Yeah, well, that’s what happens when you have 80 doves around the city, sometimes quarrelling with the mayor’s doves, but most often snooping into the lives of other’s that Kaito sees as interesting. Not really, he’s not much that much of a stalker, he just breaks into the TCDF a lot.

“Yup, that’s about it. Oh! And it’s my birthday, so coffee’s on you, tantei-kun.” Kaito half sang.

Since when did coffee substitute for an empty stomach.

Oh no, if I get wet, I’ll fully blame you for it.

“Me, dead? If that had happened, would I be standing in front of you right now?” He chucked as he removed himself from the doorframe – you have to assume he leans on those regularly, really – and walked over, hands in his pockets.

“I’m fine. I just experienced some difficulties, but nothing serious.” Just hibernation, Coffee Anonymous meetings and probably poking his nose where it didn’t belong. “You could say I’ve had a case.”

“Fill me in on the things that happened while I was gone.”

And so you should-- wait.

“You tell me, Shinigami.” Somehow... this line felt oddly familiar. In the narrative sense in which Kaito knew that Shinichi had almost definitely said that line somewhere in Detective Conan-- I mean, Arthur, but he dismissed the nagging feeling.

“A case of what, your own disappearance?” He snickered. “Fine, where do I start?”

Dramatic pause.

“A white haired girly person came back? I think his name is Art? Might have just been a flirty metaphor, since I can’t think of why someone’s name would be art, but anyway. Naoto-chan’s been Naoto-chan except dating Kuze a little bit more than usual, and your secretary-chan’s bunnies got Kuze’s bunny pregnant. You missed two months worth of anime seasons and also missed a deal on coffee down at the local supermarket.”

Another pause.

“Oh yeah, and Miyako-chan’s as pretty as ever.”
