Turning a Love of Sneakers Into Tiny Toys with @montbloctoyuk
To see more of John and James’ creations, follow @montbloctoyuk on Instagram. Explore #AirMaxDay to see how sneakerheads all over the globe are celebrating.
How’s this for a childhood dream? Two friends grew up skateboarding on the same street in Lancashire, England, and turned their shared love of sneakers into a toy company that sells tiny re-creations of Nike Air Maxes, Jordans and more. That’s the story behind Mont Bloc Toy (@montbloctoyuk) and its 30-year-old co-founders John Haworth and James Philips. Working with a South Korea-based designer friend, the pair pick out their favorite sneakers, create a design concept and have the block kits assembled. “It’s a long, arduous process,” John says. “The average sneaker has 150 pieces.” The company, launched in January, is already a hit among international sneaker fanatics. “The community has been hugely supportive. “You can go to any country and talk to another sneakerhead about a new release or their current favorite,” says John, who owns about 50 pairs while James has over 80, including ‘90s-era Air Max models. #AirMaxDay
Design Journal #9
After much discussion with one of my mentors by the name of Sheila James, I would like to put a different spin on my journal. In the past I put a spin on my day to day struggle as a brand designer working to establish myself. This time around I want to make the focus these things:
Who have I helped?
Over the past few days I have been summoned from people of my hometown of Saginaw Michigan. Tanyika Cole is a youth coach and mentor to young women of the ages of 8 to 15. She is a author of a book called, “Just Me” that talks about a young girl who was a victim of bullying. She tapped me with the goal of helping her with branding, organization and social media presence. Next up is Crystal Luckyado who is also from Saginaw has a talented twin tandem who have their own youtube video. She wanted to gain the understanding of a trademark and copyright. Finally, I am preparing a logo for Stacie Wiggins company called Strictly Business.
My Wins
Of recent there has been quite the development with my projects. First my God Moves Clothing products sold out at this year’s Stellar Awards that was held at the Orleans Hotel in Las Vegas Nevada. I sold over 300 units and they have asked me to attend the next event. After much procrastination I have finally got the Candyboards Logo completed and placed it on the social media sites respectively. Currently I have tasked both the skateboard collection art and the packaging design via Fiverr, very excited to see what the end result will be.
What am I reading
As of this date I am reading, “The Power of Broke” by Daymond John. I am 60 pages in and it has made me more motivated than ever!
My Challenges
What has been my biggest challenge currently in my journey is two major areas in regards to the God Moves Brand, my website and advertising. I’m currently working on the development of my God Moves Clothing site and I’m concern with the functionality. In addition I am finding it challenging to maintain a level of traffic to the site. In regards to advertising, I seeking for more cost efficient ways to promote my business besides online. Of recent I have taken some of my inventory and mailed it to local churches. If you have ideas or thoughts please feel free to shoot me a email at [email protected]
As always thank you for your ears and I wish you the best in your endeavors!

I manage today to get together several logo designs for my client and other brand collateral for their review. After following Daymond’s John’s idea to visit licensing.org to connect to licensing agencies, I had the opportunity to talk to two organizations. One of them pointed me to the direction of speaking with licensing agency boutiques. Basically smaller organizations that work with designers, majority of the major firms that I have located work with many of the fortune 500 companies. After a bit of digging I located to three possible organizations, one called Branding Liaison, Synergy and HAP consultancy.

Today I finally bit the bullet after crunching the numbers and made the decision to work on creating my platform via shopify. I wanted to be able to create a place where I could present my skill, sell my product and blog all at the same time. I felt that shopify’s platform is better fit for me than squarespace. Now I have the tall task of putting all this content in one place.

Meetup Wednesday and unfortunately it was a no show so while sitting at the Starbucks I had the opportunity to meet Stephanie De Paulo. She’s an inspiring artist seeking to establish herself. So I spoke with her about buying her domain name and utilizing platforms such as tumblr to post her work. I also advise her about a group called AIGA which stand for the American Institute of Graphic Arts. She seem quite enthused about the information I gave her.

Today I took the time to pre-plan my trip to the Licensing Expo which will be held on June 21st-23rd. Last year was an interesting trip, but it didn't yield me no true relationships. I blame myself for that, this time around I plan to be well prepared.

After much procrastination, I finally took matters in my own hands to create my sell sheet for the God Moves Clothing brand. I basically took information I put together after reading the book, “How To Launch a Brand”, by Finien Consultancy as a guide in addition to a google search of sell sheets to produce my end product. I’m rather excited about my end product! I have provided it here for your viewing pleasure. Please share your thoughts.
