Monster High Boomuda Triangle Issue 4 Quick Review:
It’s that time of the month again, a quick review of the newest Monster High IDW comic! I have been really enjoying the Boomuda Triangle series and have found it to be some of the best that the IDW Monsger High comics have put out, and this issue continues that.

Main Spelldon and Main Valentine (and Murk) are invited in Old Spelldon and Old Valentine’s home (by the way, I love seeing our character’s age, look at those writings and grey hair -love to see it).
Old Valentine is finishing his story about the last set of Spelldon and Valentines that came through (Popstar versions, who left their photocards - Main Valentine is bound and determined to take them from his older self).
Older Spelldon is more reserved and serves the main mansters tea, while Old Valentine talks them into a stupor and will continuously complain about the younger generation. Old Valentine and Main Valentine continuously egg each other on (which is fairly entertaining).
The Main Mansters admit that they were the one who caused the time rifts (each blaming the other for ripping The Atlas), and that they are just missing one last piece.
Both Mains are disagreeing again (Main Spelldon admitting that the Cartographer will probably drop him as an intern now, and Main Valentine not really helping by complaining that it wouldn’t be so bad if Main Spelldon had to spend the summer with him instead. Main Spelldon -correctly- points out Main Valentine’s insecurities with their relationship). They both fall silent and Old Spelldon takes him up to his attic for something that could help them.
The attic has a bunch of nods to the previous issues- the Steampunk flying machine wings Main Spelldon made, a Pirate flag from the Pirate MH cast, the bones from the reanimated horses Main Spelldon created, steamer trunk, cowboy hat, and a wagon wheel all from the Cowboy world, the swords from the Knight MH characters, a gargoyle from the Victorian/Edwardian Monster Hugh School dance, and a small version of the dragon that attacked that same dance.
Main Spelldon asks Old Spelldon how old this version of them are? He didn’t think Valentine could age. Old Spelldon just answers “I could tell you, but the you might get cursed too.” Main Spelldon backs off.
Old Spelldon dusts off his framed possession to show a dumbstruck Main Spelldon (I am once again loving the facial expressions, whether that be his subtle or more extreme ones) that he had failed a Mad Science test and he didn’t let it define him, they are all still here and together (he also alludes to knowing about the pirate battle and train robbery). Old Spelldon reminds his younger self that being a good witch is not just book smarts, it’s about what’s in you heart and the connections to others (especially his connection to the Main Valentine downstairs).
Downstairs Main Valentine and Old Valentine are still arguing about the photocards (I kinda love it), and Main Valentine is still certain him and his boo are done for.
Thankfully, Old Valentine knocks some sense into his younger self (he is disgusted by his old, but not as old as himself self). Main Valentine is reminded that everyone makes mistakes ESPECIALLY him (he brings up the Pit of Eternal Body Odor), but as long as he owns up to them, ESPECIALLY to those who love him! He needs to trust his partner!! He finishes by saying he is so over having to give his younger selves pep talks.
Main Val still undercuts this by asking for the photocards again.
Both Spelldon’s come down from the attic and Old Spelldon simply tells Old Valentine that they are out of glue and tape and to add them to the list. Old Valentine insists he will go shopping later, even through an Apocalypse. He gets angry if he can’t spend money (HA!).
The boys look at each other awkwardly and are interrupted by a time rift appearing in the living room.
Old Spelldon gives them advice on how to survive being in the collision point, while Old Valentine laughs about them all becoming primordial ooze if stuff isn’t fixed.
Main Valentine jumps into the rift, and takes the photocards, while Main Spelldon runs after him.
Main Spelldon catches Main Val, as they land in a dark and chaotic land.
They are once again about to apologize to one another, until Main Val sees the last piece of The Atlas floating away.
Main Valentine tells Main Spelldon he can get it (without going into his bat form due to the debris) he just needs Spelldon to clear the way for him.
(Valentine’s iris are not colored in one panel, and neither is Valentine’s upper lip and it makes them look so odd).
Main Spelldon agrees, ties Murk around Val’s shoulders and both of them work together to grab it -jumping on stuff from the Edwardian era, then the graveyard stuff outside of Lord Valentine’s Manor, then the stuff from the Pirate world, and finally some MH lockers.
Valentine’s expression is adorable when he catches the last piece.
Valentine begins to fall again, and calls out for his boo. Spelldon catches him and breaks his fall.
They wake up in darkness until Spelldon makes a witch light to see by.
They complement each other (the lighting is GORGEOUS here and they’re so intimately close- I love it) and try to put The Atlas back together.
This beautiful dramatic lighting stays for the next couple of pages, while the mansters lay out the Atlas pieces in the correct order hoping that due to its magic it would fix itself.
IT DOES NOT. Both of them are at a loss and then it gets worse. Val notices his Spelldon is starting to vanish.
Main Valentine does not take this well and curses his older for self for being correct on everything being sucked into the rift and turning into “primordial ooze.” If all of monster high gets pulled in here too?!? “Draculaura and everyone will be GONE.” Val starts looking for a way out. They will survive like cockroaches! Every world has them together in it and he’s going to keep this world like that too!
Murk interrupts and brings out the Wind Rose from Valentine’s pocket (it finally points to one spot - very much like the compass from the Pirate of the Caribbean movies).
Both of them start following it out (and down-they fall down again and make note of that) of the darkness into a Yellow Submarine-like world. I love how they hold hands though out.
Murk takes off with the compass and the boos run after him.
Murk leads them to a mysterious figure sitting on the floor who talks to Murk, wondering where he had gotten off to while he was mapping his home.
Both Val and Spell are confused while the hooded figure stands up, tells him he can hear them, asks what they doing with HIS shadow creature (Spelldon says Murk belongs to the Cartographer), he IS the Cartographer (Valentine says he can’t possibly be - he doesn’t look like him at all).
The final page has the hooded figure turn around to reveal SPELLDON dun dun dun!! This honestly would have been an even better reveal if the stupid fifth covers hadn’t have spoiled it months in advance. BUT, this attire looks BEAUTIFUL on Spelldon
(and his mom Circe too-she has a similar outfit in her one appearance).
….sooooo, the other cartographer has to be a version of Valentine, right? Right? I am very excited to see how the last issue wraps everything up and have been enjoying the ride. :)
