lesser movies than mamma mia (2008) would've made the central conflict be between the three dads and stoked endless competition and jealousy between them, fighting about who gets to be sophie's "real dad" and who has (and had) a "right" to pursue donna but mamma mia is no such movie. mamma mia is a cinematic masterpiece and as such they are pals throughout, happily go along with all the shenanigans and spend loads of quality time together throughout the film. they are just vibing! and then all three of them become the dads no questions asked. no drama! only vibing in greece

Bruh religious or not there’s no debating that Dreamworks Prince of Egypt (1998) is a masterpiece and one of the most visually stunning works of animation of all time. The parallels between Yocheved and Miriam singing the River Lullaby as a tear runs down their cheek and the wind blows their hair in front of their face? Incredible. The use of hieroglyphics to show how Moses learned that his father ordered the Hebrew babies slaughtered??Ingenious. The duet between Moses and Ramses where the choir chants in the background while you watch the plagues destroy Egypt and Moses is begging Ramses to let his people go and Ramses refuses and it shows them facing each other and then side by side and then Ramses walking away while Moses stands firmly??? Intense. When Moses parts the sea and the Hebrews are walking between the water and lightning strikes in the background, illuminating the silhouette of a giant shark swimming in the wall of water???? Iconic. The entire movie is just absolutely breathtaking and that’s just tea

Minor argument starts between the Darkling’s most trusted, about who is his proverbial right and who left hand.

After few weeks of Ivan and Genya finding new ways to prove their higher importance, the Darkling offhandedly resolves it during one meeting by letting them know he’s ambidextrous.

Sometimes you need to read something twice to get it. You might need to watch a movie three times to understand it. You might have to have that album on repeat for a week until the lyrics make any sense. You're allowed to engage with it and can keep engaging with it until it means something to you. People will see a painting at a museum and laugh about not getting what the big deal is but like you can come back, you can see it at another time, and maybe that next time it'll be different for you. I'm of the belief the "media literacy crisis" would solve itself if more people just sat down and did it again. Watched, read, played, listened, etc like I don't think people are getting more ignorant necessarily I just think we're not glorifying personally replaying things nearly as much as we should be.

no, you’d be a great sensate! imagine having a sensate in your cluster that you know is always safe because they’re just chilling at home! “quick, google how to make a sidecar and then read me the instructions!”

Given what the cluster would probably be going through, it probably *would* be nice to have someone they don’t need to worry about.  Plus, think how invaluable it would be to have someone to visit in a peaceful comforting sanctuary of a home when they need a break from whatever prison/hideout/Bad Badness they’re going through.  Someone in the cluster is feeling sad or scared or stressed?  They can come cuddle your pets and feel better.  They’re aching and tired and need to escape from reality for a few hours?  They can crash on your comfy couch and watch TV.  They’re tired of lousy food?  They can come share a mug of something hot to drink and a delicious (home-cooked) meal.  They haven’t left their underground hideout for weeks?  They can come sit outside and bask in the sun and breeze.  

You would be the reason your cluster will always have a home to go back to at the end of the day.  Never underestimate the value of that.

I've been noticing myself doing this recently, so I figured I'd put it out there in case someone else needs the reminder too:

You don't need to diminish yourself in order to make others feel good about themselves.

You can compliment someone else without insulting yourself. In fact, demeaning yourself will probably make it more difficult for the other person to accept the compliment.

You also don't need to disparage your own abilities in order to give someone else confidence. You can be a capable person and support other capable people.

Don't tear yourself down to build someone else up.

Just going to put some examples here, in case anyone needs them:

Compliment: You write such great angst! I was in tears after that last chapter. Compliment + self-insult: I could never write angst like you. Mine never has that gut-punch that yours does.

Compliment: You look gorgeous! That's such a pretty colour on you. Compliment + self-insult: I wish I had your fashion sense. I just wear whatever smells clean.

Compliment: This piece is awe-inspiringly good! How long did it take you?? Compliment + self-insult: Your art is so much better than mine. I could practice for a million years and never get close to this.

The thing about insulting yourself while complimenting someone else is that you might think that you're making your compliment sound that much better because you're increasing the distance between their level and yours. But what you're actually doing is refocusing your compliment away from them and onto you and your insecurities.

Maybe they'll notice and maybe they won't, but you will. Eventually, all of the insults you've given yourself will make you feel bad about that other person's skills and now, instead of a mentor or a colleague you have someone you're jealous of. Or at least, that's how it tends to go for me.

Keep the compliment focused on that person and their skills or presentation or process etc. And if you want to learn from them, ask them for advice. It can be hard to notice when you're falling into this kind of habit - I thought I'd gotten past it but here I am again - so just do the best you can ❤️

Not to get emo on main but you ever think about how the troop sang about their dreams of finding “a girl worth fighting for”, and they think their girl worth fighting for is one of romance, but the song abruptly comes to a halt when they find a different girl worth fighting for.

A tiny girl that had been killed at the hands of the Huns. A child too weak, too small to have any chance of withstanding the murderous invaders. That is their girl worth fighting for.

It’s also worth noting that ‘A Girl Worth Fighting For’ is the last song in the movie. Up until here, it’s a fun movie, and the imminent invasion feels like it’s just there to keep the plot moving, and to provide a little bit of drama to spice things up. None of the soldier’s are quite taking this seriously yet; sure, Mulan wanted to save her father from the draft, and on some level she was aware that he would die if he went to war, but beyond that she’s interested in not being caught, and not shaming her family. Her motives are good, but they’re entirely self centered. All the other soldiers are more or less in the same boat - they want to get tougher, they want to impress girls, they want to be cool soldiers. Shang’s easily the most serious of the bunch at first, and even then it’s just because training bad soldiers will reflect poorly on him, and important people are paying attention.

The abrupt ending of ‘A Girl Worth Fighting For’ is the wake up call. The soldiers and the audience get slapped in the face with the realization of what’s really at stake here. China is being invaded. Villages are burning, civilians are dying, and this isn’t going to stop until the country is conquered or the invaders are defeated. This is not a fun musical, this is a major crisis.

Mulan is such a good movie for so many reasons, but the abrupt tone shift is such a major reason why. It’s an excellent commentary on the reality of war, and it being a kids movie just meant they had to make their point without showing any actual gore, which I’d honestly say makes it that much more poignant.
