Quick update for Australian Open 2017: Roger Federer advances to 28th Grand Slam final after defeating his compatriot Stan Wawrinka 7-5 6-4 1-6 4-6 6-3. Men’s Final will be on Sunday, January 29. Roger will be facing the winner of Rafael Nadal and Grigor Dimitrov in another semi-final.

Internship Week 10 Reflection This week is my last one here at Beijing Television Station-Sports Channel. Rio Olympics has started and one of the three daily news programs is becoming as “Olympics News Update” so I joined this program’s production team and only focused on Rio Olympics. My daily job was to look for different news release from major news agency and media all over the world, such as Associated Press, Reuters, BBC, CNN, NBC, and ESPN. A fellow editor and I were responsible for the “International Angles” module in everyday’s program. We wanted our audiences to hear from various voices around the world and we also aimed to bring the stories behind the scene for them. Olympics is not just about the games, it is about spirits and humanity. Therefore sports fans want to know what the athletes experienced in the last four years and how the athletes prepared for the Olympics. A post-match interview of Chinese swimming athlete Fu Yuanhui winning the bronze medal after Women’s 100m Backstroke Final attracted so many people’s attention. She even didn’t know she won the bronze medal until the reporter told her she did it. She was like “What?! I ranked No.3? Wow… I even didn’t realize it. I just tried my best, not thinking too much about the result. I am exhausted, nearly died…” The 20-year-old’s interview spread out really fast on the social media because she showcased the Olympic spirit “Faster, Higher, Stronger”. She was not thinking about the glory and fame. Instead, she was just pursuing a better self.

Internship Week 9 Reflection My second reporting job was done by a camera man, a fellow internship student and I. Our assignment was to cover an annual summer event in Beijing. It is called “Ocean and Beach Festival” and takes place nearby Beijing Olympic Beach Volleyball Center. So all the sands used for this event are Olympic standard. Before heading to the event, we chose some major topics that we could possibly cover and also we prepared some backup options. Our requirement was to bring back two news pieces. Major Topics: -Onsite performance (interview actors and audiences) -Beach soccer and volleyball players (tell their stories and encourage more people to enjoy beach sports) Backup Topics: -Visitors’ preparation (ask them what they brought for the event and their suggestions for future visitors) -Foreigners’ experiences (ask for their opinions and suggestions) When we arrived, there was a performance by two Brazilian actors from Rio. So we decided to cover the performance because the Rio Olympics was just started two days ago and we could ask for their expectations and hope for the Olympics in their home country. In this way, this news piece had its own newsworthiness and timeliness. On that day, there were just few people playing soccer or volleyball on the beach so we used our backup option to interview visitors about their preparation for participating this event. Preparations: -Bringing the sunscreen -Taking instant foods -Bringing a tent for afternoon nap -Parents can bring some toys for their kids to play with sands

Internship Week 8 Reflection My first ever sports reporting was done this week. My job was to cover the opening ceremony of Basketball Summer Camp held by a former China National Basketball Team coach, Wang Fei. A camera man and I were assigned to do this topic. Before this event, we talked about what we would shoot and who we would interview. Thinking about what the news-worthy points could be before covering an event is really helpful for the reporter because the reporter can do some research in advance to make sure he can get well-rounded information during the event. On the day of the event, we arrived about 30 minutes earlier to schedule interviews and get familiar with the event process. Finding the unique angles and taking notes during the event really helped me grasp the key points for the summer camp which are the professional training system and sports psychological training. Another challenge was shooting the appropriate footages corresponding to the points the reporter would make. So I exchanged my ideas frequently with the camera man to make sure he shot the footages I want. At the same time, the camera man usually shoots some extra footages such as some close-up shots so that the reporter can use these shots as transition when editing the news piece. Before doing the final editing, I gathered all the information I have and watched all the footages I got. In my mind, I portrayed the whole story and asked myself what information I want to present for audiences and what they really want to know. So I wrote about the uniqueness of the summer camp and the training processes. More importantly, I used the interview of Wang Fei to illustrate his intention and goals to hold this summer camp for young adolescents.

Internship Week 7 Reflection

As sports news editor, getting familiar with different sports events is really important because we cannot just follow one particular sport. This week, I did not write anything about Wimbledon or Euro Cup. However, I was trying to get to know about cycling and learn about how to write about Tour de France. At the beginning, I had no idea about what I should focus on for a specific stage. Therefore, I did a lot of research and tried to know what the key points are for a cyclist to do well in that stage. Furthermore, there are different classifications in the race, such as general, mountains, points, and young rider. If a cyclist ranks No. 1 in a particular classification, he will wear different-colored jerseys to celebrate his performance. Last but not least, knowing about the unique points and characteristics about a stage and each cyclist helps me summarize the whole stage into just one-minute news piece. I covered stages 5-7 in this week and the most impressive one for me is stage 6. Stage 6 did not have so many mountainous roads so there were a bunch of cyclists sprinting to the finish line in the end. It was the most exciting and memorable moment for the whole stage. As an editor, I did not have to mention the beginning or the middle because that was not news-worthy. Only the sprint is the unique point for this stage so I talked about the cause, the procedure, and the final result of this sprint. Rio Olympics is coming soon in less than a month. During the Olympics coverage, there will be more sports events that are unfamiliar to me. However, as a news editor, we do not have to be professional in any kinds of areas. What we need to do is bringing the vivid news to the audiences in a news-worthy way.

Internship Week 6 Reflection Wimbledon is one of the hottest sports events in the world this summer besides Euro Cup and Rio Olympics. I was the editor for Day 5 and it featured tough victories from Serena and Venus Williams, a quick match between Federer and Evans, more importantly, the real battle between Del Potro and Wawrinka. Although there were so many matches suspended and postponed due to the light rain for a long time on Day 5, people were so enjoyed about these four matches. I started my news piece with Serena and Venus’ matches because they both suffered a three-set match and finally proceeded to next round. Five-time champion Venus Williams’ match was suspended four times by rain and even the rain disrupted Venus’ match point in the deciding set leading 7-6, however 36-year old was maintaining her aggression till the end, winning the deciding set by 10-8. And then, I moved the lens to men’s singles. Former Grand Slam champions Wawrinka and Del Potro were facing each other in the early second round. I was using narrative style to cover the match by highlighting the main points and at the end talking about Del Potro proceeded into round of 32 of Grand Slam after more than two years suffering three-time wrist surgery. However, the chief editor told me I can tell the story from another angle. For example, telling the audience what happened to Del Potro in the last two years more specifically and what Wimbledon means to him could attract more people instead of narrating the match because the story behind the scene may portrait the victory more dramatically and let tennis fans know how tough the come-back was for Del Potro.
